There's 50% off just about everything now (including Crysis2, though I can't get
excited about that).
This brings the price of Shift2 down from "way, way too much" to "not too bad", or
17.49 in the UK. I'm not a big fan of EA's downloaded games, but I appear to have
cracked and bought it. :-)

And what a waste of money that was! I swear this thing feels worse than Shift1. How
can so many talented people have failed to produce a realistic feeling driving
experience?
Oh yes, by developing it for consoles. :->
There's no fool like an old fool, eh? Why won't someone give me an absorbing,
low-brow game like this with LFS or rFactor or Racing style handling?
Never mind. The road to sim hell is paved with good intentions. I guess I must be
an optimist at heart otherwise I wouldn't have spent so much on iRacing, let alone
Shift 1 & 2. At least I waited to pay less, that;s the silver lining. :->

Hang on. I restarted it to test new graphics settings and the thing feels totally
different. Not sim-like, but a whole lot better than the freaking annoyingly awful
car I had before.
This may be like 1 in that case. Basic cars feel like shyte, but the right car with
the right tweaks can be decent enough to allow you to concentrate on driving rather
than working out *how* to drive with the dodgy controls.

No, I changed my mind again. :-)
The default handling on my Audi, with recommended G25 settings, does feel "ok". But
when I try the other invitational events at the start of my career, in other cars,
the handling is almost as confidence-inspiring as a blind man selling window
cleaner to Eskimos.
And the graphics are designed for promo screenshots and folk with ADHD... all glitz
and no substance. It makes GT5 look like a work of art. I appreciate their
understated fidelity more each day. I guess the same goes for iRacing.
I just wish I could swap Shift2's faster AI and more varied gameplay into GT5. I
hit the endurance events in that and lost the will to live.
Andrew McP... off to drive around in GTAIV for a bit and take out my sim
frustrations on the first pedestrian to get in my way.

For some reason I couldn't get Brands Hatch to load, so I dumped that installation
and started again. And for some reason this install feels better. Significantly
better in some of the more slippery problems I had before.
I suspect this means my attempts to alter the settings weren't all working properly
for some reason. Probably user error.
Now I'd say Shift2 isn't worse than Shift1. But I'd hesitate to say it's any better.
It is, however, pretty entertaining. I'm also a big fan of their new trees. They
look a bit cartoony in screenshots & videos, but when you're actually driving they
do a very good job of convincing you it's a real landscape.
The permanent distance fog is a different matter. We're had quite a bit of smog in
the UK in recent weeks, thanks to the stupidly high temperatures for the time of
year, and Shift2 reminds me of that. I long for a stiff breeze to blow it all away.
Perhaps there's a graphics setting I need to explore.

Ok, I just had my "that justified every penny of the purchase" experience.
In Shift1 it was the Nordschleife which made me grin, and in the right car, with
the right stabilising tweaks, I found the immersive graphics and overall experience
more than made up for the iffy handling.
In Shift2 I've just raced in my works Porsche at the Nordschleife (where else?) in
the dark, with the HUD and aids all off. Just me, the lights in my mirrors, and my
beams flashing over the competition ahead. A very good experience. Very, very good.
It'd be even better if you could alter the darned FOV for three screen use (there
was a mod for 1, I guess there may be something similar for 2).
If only the darned vehicles would handle as well as iRacing's! We are shown little
glimpses of sim heaven all over the place. But when, when , when is someone going
to gather all those slivers of heaven together?

I think it might have been part of the Easter sale, but I'm not sure. That was the
case this side of the pond, anyway.

$40 now. Oh well. It has gotten lousy reviews anyway.
