I'm running GPL on a P233 with 64Mb of memory and a Banshee graphics
card. It doesn't look too bad - in fact it looks excellent until I put
other cars in. Then I have to take loads of details off in order to get
it to run properly with only a few drivers. I was quite happy with this
until someone on here pointed out that in fact the computer eliminates
slower drivers first. I'm a pretty poor driver - 1:11:xx at the Glen is
my best lap time and 1:14:xx is more typical (actually, spinning wildly
and cursing is more typical - I'm only learning - had it a week or two).
Anyway, discovering that I can substitute in a few slower drivers and
run midfield has made things a lot more interesting but also increased
my desire to see the game run with a full field.
What's the minimum spec of machine anyone out there is running with to
get a full field of cars and some reasonable detail level? I'm thinking
of spending a bit of money on an upgrade to a PII (yes, I am already
that ***ed) - would a PII 300 run a full field? if not then would a
PII 350 or a PII 400? Also, the intermittant sound is bugging me - I've
ordered a new sound card to try to fix this (SB Live Value) - so
hopefully that should pick the framerate up a little.

Hi Richard,
I just had an idea so this is kinda like thinking out loud.
If you turn the number of sounds to the max (16?) its it still intermittent?
It might be that other sounds closer are taking precidence thus causing one
sound to be intermittent.
Of course your FPS will drop with 16 sounds :-(
Jason.

to be an Abit BH6, a Celeron 300a overclocked to 450, a good fan on the CPU,
lots of ram and a 3dfx VooDoo2 accelerator.
Following these advices, I've just ordered these parts. I'll be up and
running next week and I'll post my impressions.

Clegg Only the mind is waving >Dept. of Mathematics (Network Control group) Uni. of York. >www: http://manor.york.ac.uk/top.htmlIm running on a PII 300mhz with 96 MB RAM. Looks pretty good even with a full
field at a track like Monza with not alot of trackside objects. I only get
about 14 FPS in a race there but as soon as im in the open or only 2-3 cars
around im up to 19-23 FPS without a graphics accelerator!!!!!. My opinion is
the PII will help alot and once you get that another 32-64 MB RAM wouldnt hurt.
You should see probably 20 fps with a full field(except for maybe the very
start of the race).
I run a p2-300, 64Mb ram, 8mb v2 card. I usually run with 10 cars, this way
my FPS stays in the 30's all the time, 800x600, v.low detail, most trackside
objects, no eye candy on, all textures on, cars only in mirrors (no mirror
textures), no bevelled tyres, no driver texture. This is the setup I need
for 36fps online and so I practice with it too. I can run more than 10
drivers without too much of a fps hit but when it does drop to mid-20s I
notice the lack of control/instant feedback. For monaco I turn some more
stuff off if it's getting a bit slow.

your ass the first time you turn on all graphics and all cars!!! add a good
video card and minimum 64 ram.

Yeah - this is, in fact, what is happening - I've got the sounds down
to three because it gets the framerates up a bit.
