I bought this game after reading about it in this ng. Now after driving a Lotus at monza no tweaks or anything I lapped at 1.28.5 after about 2hrs of crashing and spinning. Now 3 weeks later I was wondering if after learning all tracks and coming within .5sec of all lap records set by the like of clark etc. this can not be right.... I should not be able to drive as fast as them. I drove formula ford a few years ago and was a middle of the pack man.

Steve wrote Maybe you are the new-born Clark. Some people will excel with some types of racing while being slow with other types. Now try a sub-8min lap at the Ring ;) <g> -= Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard/Nas-Frank> -= NROS Nascar sanctioned Guide http://www.nros.com/ -= SimRacing Online http://www.simracing.com/ -= Official mentally retarded guy of r.a.s. -= May the Downforce be with you... there is no way I will get a sub 8.min at the ring it is far to difficult :) reading my post it reads as I'm saying the game is to easy, far from it. What I really meant was how is it possible for me to get within .5 sec of the real drivers lap times. Thinking about it further maybe knowing that if I crashed it would not involve a trip to the hospital or worse so that would account a little towards a fast time also these times were all in training and not racing against other cars. I feel that i should state that during the last 3 weeks I have been at home doing little else except practicing and more practicing my wife is going mad. I was supposed to be decorating but this is far more fun. Steve
I don't race GPL, but I see no reason why people should be able to come near or break old records. Here are some reasons why: 1. You don't have to worry about financial loses or personal injuries when you wreck, so you can push the envelop a little bit a try new things you normally would not risk in real life. 2. Overall, you have more track time then the real-life drivers, which actually gives you more experience than them. 3. Even though you did not have a great deal of success in Formula Ford, you still have the experience of road racing that other sim-racers don't have. And some of these skills can carry over to the sim-world. Gary243 - "The most electrifying driver in racing entertainment"

The current world record according to a quick search of 5 hotlap sites is 1:27.05. No doubt about it though, you picked it up damn quick. The question is,,,, are you having fun? JM

You just got better over the years Pal! Plus those Formula Fords were just not quick enough for you.... ;-) Try on-line now.... meet up with Wolfgang Woeger and see how fast you really are!! Don't forget, in a race you have to do ump*** laps at 1m28ish without spinning or crashing, not just one hot lap!! Then of course there is always the Nurburg Ring..... Dave Hawnt (UK)

They used to say if Formula One was still at 1.5 Liters Niki Lauda would have never accomplished what he did due to being able to control high horsepower cars effectively. Woeger is fast, and very consistant both are needed to win online. The Ring is neat, but I personally use it for Solo ll practise since I never can remeber what turn is next so I am always coming into corners hot and trying to real car in in middle of corner. Fun track tho frutrating. Dave

First off, it is a game, who are you comparing your speeds to? If you are comparing it to the INGAME clark, he gets faster as you get faster, the AI develops as you develop. If you are talking about real life records, you cant compare a game to real life. For one, grip will be different, real world limitations affect it and how can you expect the horse power and speed and handling to be exacly the same. I also cant believe you when you said you were down in the 28's in a couple of hours. It takes someone that is VERY experienced driving in the real world and sim racing at least a couple of days to actually start to drive fast and get the hang of it and with the default setup, i guess you lowered the gas, but with the default setup, you can get to 29's and maybe high 28's but very hard to do mid to low 28's especially after "2 hours". HEHE, im sure you were just saying it to say it but im sure it took you at least 1-2 weeks to get to 28's if you are there. Jesse

don't forget in 3 weeks of racing in the game, you could have actually ran more laps then clark ran in his career at some of those tracks. -- Kevin Anderson ICQ # 6769389

Yeah, that's what I understood from your first post... and I agree. You said that the great lap came after 2 hours of spinning and crashing. With real consequences, you would've been in the hospital... or worse. That's why the Spa times for the best GPL races are SO MUCH better than the real 1967 records... drive it and you'll know why: 90% of the time in 5th gear, with poles and buildings just FEET from the edge of the road. Reality=death. Virtual reality=shift-R. No one in their right mind would've remotely tried to do the same things (speed-wise) that we do in some sections of GPL tracks. That's one reason the speeds are greater. Also, unlimited practice isn't something they were afforded. --Dave

Some very good suggestions as to why the times might be simillar, here, but I especially liked the last one: The real drivers spent just a matter of hours on each track, and even that was split up into different days, for practise, qualifying, etc. So in fact, they do INCREDIBLY well, concidering. Another good suggestion was the realism. You're not afraid to do a bit of late breaking, or to take the revs a little high. Real race drivers however know that a split second mistake can cost them their lives, or worse... Adam

Yes I'm having fun at the game to the point of it becoming an ***ion like going to bed at 2am then just having one more race to try and get that little bit faster .02sec it is great. Now to address the 1.28 at monza yes it wasa a fluke lap after many crashes but now I can put in consistant lap times +/- 1sec over 10 laps before I lose concertration which I feel is the main thing in racing , keeping focused. I would love to race online but playing on a 166mmx with 64meg and using a wingman joystick I have to keep details down and have a stupid winmodem. Will have to wait till I can convice myself and the wife that I need to upgrade what she feels is a perfectly good computer arrgh. And as I've been playing so much this won't go down to well. I agree about Wolfgang being a superb racer and have no false illusions that I would be in the same league as him, but what a gent he is by posting his setups which I now use... Steve

I'm using a simillar computer to yours, although mine has 32MB of RAM, BUT does have a Voodoo II, so is probably a little better at games than yours. I do however understand just how annoying it can be at times. I've never played online in Grand Prix Legends. I know what it's like in a single race, and how slow it is, so there's really no point. Didn't you write EXACTLY the same message last time? Adam
