Fixing steering jitter ('the shakes') in GPL

A user with a Saitek R4 wheel surveyed others about steering-arm jitter in GPL with linear wheel settings. Reports pointed to noisy sound-card game ports and worn potentiometers, with dedicated PDPI L4 cards, Diamond MX300 sound cards, USB or force-feedback wheels, and new pots cited as fixes.

Hi, Just wondering who can calibrate their controller at the linear end of the spectrum and NOT get the shakes in GPL (the drivers arms quivering or worse when you drive). I use a 1% deadzone, and for comparison, set the steering to 14 and the slider almost all the way or all of the way to the left. Please detail your equipment and results...I'll start the ball rolling. Hello I have just bought the MS Sidewinder FF wheel. I have the slider fully linear, and in most setups I use 15% steering ratio. I get no shakes at all. After two days with this wheel I can match or better all my previous times (e.g. at Monza (lotus) 1m30.01, at the Glen (lotus) 1m06.95: nothing great I realise but I'm improving). I'm really pleased with my new wheel. My equipment is PII-350, 128 Mb, MSFF into SB AWE64. Hi Marc, The key for me was installing an MX300 soundcard. Absolutely rock solid calibration now. Thanks for the replies so far!! I should add that I also tried: Logitech Wingman Formula attached to SB PCI 128 - rock solid and... I am now on the 4th R4...supplied by Saitek...as we were sure that the first 3 from the store must have been part of some bad batch (but, no, they are all acting the same). Marc.

What wheel are you using and what game port did you use before the MX300? What shakes, if any did you get before and they were eliminated by just changing the sound card? Thanks....especially for your F1RS and MGPRS2 sounds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) Marc.

I don't know whether there are large differences between the R4 and R4 FF wheel, but with the FF version I have absolutely no shaking. It calibrates at a range from 1 to 1024, and when you hold it still, it stays _absolutely_ in position, there is no change in the Control Panel screen. I have a PCI 128, too. However, I sometimes have problems with my pedals - they sometimes are awful shaking, but pressing and releasing it several times usually solves the problem. Perhaps a dust or potentiometer problem, I guess (I'm not sure whether the R4 FF pedals are digital or analogue). I would love to know what you think changed that would make a difference. Were the DirectInput files changed...or do you think it might be something else? Why did you go back--other problems or to address the shakes? Thanks, Marc.

I get almost no trembling with Diamond MX300, TM GP1 and CH Pro Pedals. Steering set to fully linear and 20:1. No deadzone as far as I can tell. Changing gameport or joystick driver doesn't seem to make much difference in my system. It could be, that the MX300 simply filters the joystick signal, but I can't notice any lag and my times have improved over those I got when using Diamond S90. >Hi, >Just wondering who can calibrate their controller at the linear end of the >spectrum and NOT get the shakes in GPL (the drivers arms quivering or worse >when you drive). Just out of interest, do you get any trembling or jittering when steering is set at its most responsive setting (12:1)? Marc

I am trying to figure out what to do...obviously. Are the game ports in modern sound cards (e.g., SB PCI 128 and Live!) that bad?? Is it just Creative Labs cards? The old reason for needing a dedicated game port--CPU too fast--is I assume not a factor in a card that was released after the P2 450's were on the market? Marc.

folks- this sounds great and all as i have some pretty severe shakes and think they might be related to the fact that my car often spins out at seemingly random points under braking. i have a SB AWE64, celery300a o/c to 464, voodoo2, 128MB RAM, etc. i'm using a TM GP1 wheel and the CH pedals. Pot is brand new. does this with viper, too. seems better with the generic drivers. BUT $100 so i can plug in my wheel? c'mon.... don't they know i'm a student? so my question is whether anyone knows of/has a less expensive gamecard which might improve the situation... thanks, mark > Marc..... > Get yourself a PDPI L4 game-card and say good bye to the shakes! > I used a SB16 as game-port when the GPL demo came out... but upgraded to a > PDPI later on... wow talk about gentle controls!

I get shakes, too, on my T2 (connected to Thrustmaster ACM card). What I do is before a race is I heat the steering pot with a hair dryer. Smooths it out instantly but i need to reheat it between races. I hope this clears up in summer. ICQ 3002944 The HotSeat http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~sf5j-rdyn/

I am not a student, but I agree with your sentiments completely! I cannot believe that a "high end" sound card could come with such a piece-of-*** game port. Lots of people want to attach at least a joystick to it!! My arms were twitching so bad that the game was undrivable, I replaced my steering pot and all is better. No other game or the calibration screen could show that the pot was gone. Celeron 300A o/c 450 64 meg ram Voodoo 1 Direct X 6.0 Soundblaster Live value (into which r4 is plugged) Lastest Drivers off Saitek site (as of 2 weeks ago - not sure of version no.) Mode 1 seperate axis. There is still absolutely ape jittering in the caliberation screen - although most of this disappears when you push the accelerator down slightly. This is the 2nd R4 I've had (the first snapped when I applied some swift oppositelock!!!! A flaw in the steering column or something I reckon, so I had to take it back) - the first one also had worse much more *** jitters then the second. My mate has a R4 force feedback and reckons its as smooth as can be, I think it may have optical pots like the Microsoft wheel. Could be worth your while taking back the R4 and getting a FF version if you're having no luck. -- Robin. http://www.oppositelock.freeserve.co.uk Nurburgring and Grand Prix Legends Remove nospam from e-mail address to reply >Please, please tell me what hardware you have. With my Logitech Wingman Formula Force on USB, no shakes at all. The old Thrustmaster T2 on Aureal Vortex digital gameport (or analog mode), severe shaking. Keith.

I can clearly see the jittering with the R4 (worse) or my Nascar Pro on the Windows calibration screen. I can predict how much arm movement there will be from the calibration screen... Marc.

All with an Aureal Vortex A3D card, here are my findings :- Thrustmaster F1 Severe shaking Microsoft Sidewinder standard joystick mild shaking Microsoft Force feedback wheel No shaking (except in corners when losing grip ) All shown in GPL, MGPRS2, GP2 and in windows game contollers, with and without Poll with interrupts and on both of the Gameport settings available with the Vortex. Voodoo 2, Win 98 (was 95) BTW, with the TM Formula 1, I had to recalibrate after about half hour of use, when the soundcard warmed up it was ok, strange. -- Ian Parker ICQ 21772592 >With my Logitech Wingman Formula Force on USB, no shakes at all. solved! some mins of practice and the shakes have gone ... :)
% I use : % Thrustmaster F1 wheel attached to SB16 % I usually get shaking, but after cleanning the pots (contact cleanner) It is % much worst now ... % i have cleaned my pots before and never had this problem ... % whats wrong? % in GPL calibration screen i get 739 at full right usually, and now there is % a place in the center position that gives me 1800 ... :( It maybe that the cleaner has finally diluted the lubricant in the pot and it is now smeared all over the contacts. It maybe time to replace the pot, or take it apart and wipe the inside surfaces clean and put it back together. There are little tabs that old the pot together. It's a fairly easy process (except for the soldering). -- **************************** Michael E. Logically there should be more trembling with more responsive setting, but I'm not sure, if I can see the difference. >Just out of interest, do you get any trembling or jittering when steering is >set at its most responsive setting (12:1)? >Marc

I have a '98 TSW connected to PDPI L4 gameport. Soundcard is SB16. 400Mhz processor, 128RAM, Diamond Monster 2. Serious shakes. I've tried everything. Running WIN95. I don't know how to change deadzone or dlinput.dll. Can it be done in WIN95? Sam
