I have this weird feeling that GPL v1.1 will become GPL 2.0 complete with a
$49 price tag. Current users will probably receive a $10 to $20 rebate(just
wishful thinking).
No way it takes 8 months to tweak and correct the few bugs that exist in the
sim. Face it guys and gals this aint gone be no "patch", this will be a
updated version of the sim. Do you really think that Papy would add FF and
such for free?
I hope that I'm wrong(sure as hell want be the first time and certainly want
be the last).
GPL is without a doubt the best sim ever created and if Papy makes it even
better it would definitely be worth another 25 to 50 bucks. Whether its a
"patch" or a new version I just wish they'd get the sucker out the door.
Scottie
Speculation whether GPL 1.1 will be a paid upgrade
Scottie Smith guessed the long-delayed GPL 1.1 patch would become a paid GPL 2.0, but most thought people would not pay for multiplayer fixes and force feedback. Posters listed wished-for changes such as a Linux server, better AI behaviour and D3D support, and Randy Cassidy joked that hopes for a Linux server were very optimistic. Side discussions covered whether GPL uses a client/server model and whether sim racing involves fear.

Not unless it has a lot more than we've heard about - say new tracks
or something. Not that it isn't an impressive sounding patch, it is,
but they can't expect people to shell out again for multiplayer fixes
and FF.
Joe
"but they can't expect people to shell out again for multiplayer fixes

I would...and NT / Linux support, and warm tires at the start, and the
ability to kick off unbehaving online racers, and no offline suicidal "a la
Surtees at Monza" behavior of the AI's.
Nonetheless, in its present form, the greatest sim ever made.

Interesting remark... Isn't he saying that sim racing will never exist
as a sport :o)? I agree there is no fear of loosing your life, but
there's the fear of making a fool of yourself and fear of loosing the
rear. Is that enough fear to make it a sport :o)?

http://home.swipnet.se/~w-41236/ (Read all about the "Global online
racing"-proposal under "For developers". Read it a couple of times,
cause noone has understood it the first time they've read it yet :o)).
I dunno, don't think so. There are plenty of people on the NROS and VROC
that make fools of themselves.....and making a fool of themselves doesn't
stop them dead cold like buying the farm in a flame wreckage of a racecar.
:)

Oh... Is this a known persisting feature? Surtees has hit two times the back
of my car when braking for the Parabolica, is this happening to the others
too?

Yepp, after the announcement of FF for the patch I'm waiting for Randy to
announce a Linux server, too. Call me VERY optimistic. ;^)

I'm completely puzzled about the constant talk about 1.1. Just what earth-shattering
changes are going to take place?
FFB would be nice.
D3D support would be great.
A few more choices for newbies would be nice.
Improved net code would be nice (but of debatable use given the state of the Net these
days).
But nothing's going to fundamentally change what's already a great racing experience. I
think what I'm saying is that if people aren't enjoying themselves already, nothing in the
patch is likely to help... and if people are enjoying it already, what's to complain about?
Andrew McP
You betcha!
You're VERY optimistic.
:-) Couldn't resist.

More choices for newbies (and pros)? Take a look at GPaL!

So ballpark estimate on the patch date Randy?

Granted, but there is the OpenGL....
Um, what? Its the best there is right now for something as accurate as GPL.
About the only thing I can think of that they truly might want to correct is
how they handle multiplayer collisions to help avoid some of the weirdness
that happens. :)
already, nothing in the
to complain about?
True enough.

What would the benefits of a Linux server be? Is GPL 1.1 going to a
true client/server model? Will this improve lag for racers?

I should've pointed out I don't want/need/lust after any of the options I mentioned.

Would it be at least possible? Dependency on Windoze should be
minimal after removing sound, graphics and controller code.

I don't have the source code, so I can't check. ;^)
But the possibility is there, that the server could do all the AI
calculations while the client has only to do your car, the graphics
and the positional updates.
Only if the AI calculations are more cpu intensive than the server
updates, it would be worthwhile, of course.
I compare it with Quake2, there is a definite gain when running a
dedicated server with 5 or 6 bots. The path finding for those ***s
is now done by the server and not the client -> much better frame rate.

Uh, folks..unless Randy corrects me, I do believe that GPL IS a
client/server app. In fact, I'd be that each AI racer acts as a client on
your computer and so do you. :?
Can't imagine trying to write a game that was written groundup to be
multiplayer of the complexity of GPL in any other manner.

could come from many reasons and certainly not *fear*!!!.LOL

What?! An deprive us of all those wonderful replays? I still love the
Ferrari Rocket blasting off from the startline at Kyalami.
So what's a better word? If I'm in a race I'm taking seriously (GPLWS

Tense or nervous.
If computer games scare you, make a trip to the US and take a NYC taxi
ride. Nothing will ever scare you again.

Ah. Well for single player racing it seems a lot more practical to do
this with a dual CPU system.
