Tongue-in-cheek prediction of GP3's release date

Rob Swindells predicted, with no inside information, that Grand Prix 3 would be released in 12 weeks. Replies mocked the prediction, and his claim about humans using only 10% of their brains sparked an off-topic argument between neuropathology student Mark Stahl and Thom j. over whether that is a myth.

Grand Prix Three will be released in 12 weeks time, starting Monday. I will update my prediction every week. I'm confident I will be right, but I'm not afraid of getting egg on my face. I don't have any kind of inside info, it's just a feeling. The human mind is very powerful, especially mine :) and no scientist has ever been able to fully understand it. We only use 10% of our brains (apparently) and I've been racing sims for 4 years now and I belive the other 90% of my brain is completely engaged in Motoracing. So there you have it. Expect GP2 in 12 weeks, or 3 months. That would be September, but exatly 12 weeks. 12 weeks. Rob ------ ONE Human Race. ONE IndyCar Series.
No way! But if you are right I'll let you pass me while in the lead in Monaco in an online race with 20 other real drivers enjoying a 78 lap race without warping! Borut

>That would be September, but exatly 12 weeks. 12 weeks. I think that's before the estimated release date, and manufacturers seldom make those. In fact, you could probably count the games that made estimated release (and didn't need 5 patches just to get running) on one hand. Of course, the producer/publisher had the good sense to keep their traps shut about when GP3 is coming out, so there isn't any info on how close it really is to completion... I say it'll be out by Christmas, *perhaps* by Thanksgiving... Hitting that Christmas market is the real target. Tim

I mean, I'll remind everyone of my prediction. Next week it'll be 13 weeks until GP3 is released. I am right, oh yes... I shall be correct! Rob ------ ONE Human Race. ONE IndyCar Series.
Woudln't that be 11 weeks! :) I just hope we get to race GP3 before Y2K! :) Later, John

you know, that whole "10% of our brains" thing is a complete myth. just thought you'd like to know. for this, and other reasons, i think you'll turn out to be wrong about GP3. mark MD/PhD (neuropathology) candidate is very powerful, especially mine :) and no scientist has ever been able to fully understand it. [snip] I don't buy that for a second! Do you honestly believe that we, as humans, use our brains to the full capacity? It sure will be a disapointment to many if it turns out to be true! The Excelsior "To Boldy Go Where No Man Has Gone Before... - Doh! I'm On The Wrong Ship!"
Thom j. 05 Jun 1999#472039
Excelsior; Well it appears Mark Stahl believes so & with nothing to back it. It is amazing to me that I read all these factual words of wisdom on almost every ng with no facts to back it. Of course many do but most do not! {imho} Cheers All.. Thom_j.

That's right - you need only spend 10 minutes on Usenet to confirm that many people use only 5%.... :-) Cheers! John
Doesnt that mean that there's a 90% chance that you are wrong 100% of the time?<G> Regards, Phillip
Mark Stahl 05 Jun 1999#472042
thom j. is welcome to express his (very) humble opinion, but i did mention that i'm a grad student in neuropathology and could be expected to know something as elementary as that. it's not really the kind of thing you "have an opinion" on; many studies have verified it as a fact. i don't think it's appropriate to get into why in this ng- although you seemed to want some facts to back up what i said. do a medline search on "electroencephalography" for a start. that urban legends page is pretty interesting and entertaining, too- and appropriate for soemone who only wants to use 10% of his brain :P sheesh. nothing to back it, my ass.... well, back to sim racing.....

Well, the 10% thing is a myth. You can read about it here: [link lost in import] But to summarize, the 10% thing stems from a misinterpretation of terminology by laypersons. Basically, we only use 10% of our brains for motor and sensory functions, the remaining 90% is used for things like language and abstract thought. --- Jet Jaguar I have a spam blocking address. Well Mark; I read what you say but there is no definitive proof in your comments Grad student or not! I will not go into my graduate degrees as it is un-important but you are still speaking via conjecture! This subect has been studied for hundreds of years with no facts! Yes your points are available but not facts! Both medicine & science have many years of more study to go. This is still my imho' & it is the same for you! "sheesh. nothing to back it, my ass.." Somewhat shallow & crude for an alleged educated individual. Don't you think? Cheers Thom_j. aka Mr imho.. P.S. In regards to"electroencephalography" You're not the only one who has read/studied this. Remember you never know who you are talking too or challenging!

That's the problem. You can not put science behind something like this How are scientists honestly expected to know what our minds are capable of? If we knew that, we'd already be at our limit! This is in not way to offend you. It's simply my opinion, but quite a strong one at that. :-) The Excelsior
Mark Stahl 06 Jun 1999#472263
haha. ok, thom- i'll remove 90% of your brain and see how you do. i'll even let you pick the 10% you keep. will that be enough proof for you? it'll be a well documented experiment, i promise! what a joke.... i was just trying to do my little part to dispel one of those myths you hear all the time. sorry i said anything. an alleged educated individual. Don't you think?>> no, not really. oh, and it would be "allegedely educated". a natural response in a relaxed and informal forum to being told that a huge mountain of easily cited scientific evidence doesn't actually exist. (what elephant?... oh- *that* elephant :) ) you get back to me about that experiment, ok? mark
Mark Stahl 06 Jun 1999#472264
excelsior- well, it depends on how someone means "uses 10%". if you mean that people only remember a small percentage of what they could, have the capacity to be more intelligent (better at pattern recognition, logic or something), or even be somehow more emotionally intuitive- it may be true that most people don't work up to their capacity. And there may be something to that- although the 10% thing seems completely arbitrary. Either way, that's a difficult thing to measure and a shaky assertion at best. (although it seems people actually remember lots more than they consciously recall... another topic). i think this is the idea you're getting at, and i'd agree with you to a point. If you somehow mean that only 10% of the physical mass of the brain is used- well, that's ridiculous and can be easily disproven (and has been, in many well-documented experiments). some folks actually think this because of the oft-quoted figure. i've heard of the 10% thing being used to defend the possibility of psychic powers or telepathy. i think the original poster made reference to it in this context (though he seemed to be sort of half-joking). There's no evidence for anything like this, of course- but one should never say never.... the 10% thing was just totally made up to make people feel better about themselves, i suppose. but even if the message behind it has some truth (that people have more potential than they use), the 10% figure was just thrown in there to make the assertion sound like somebody measured it. all i'm trying to say is that no one ever has, and so the specific 10% assertion with which we are all familiar is a popular-culture myth (yes, it's included in that urban-legend listing right alongside the kidney-stealing thing and the HIV-infected needles in pay phone change returns)- and nothing more. i still think GP3 will be out later than september....

Excelsior; Your point is "Spot-on" and it appears Mark would rather advertise his intelligence by announcing his "grad student status" as if this will make somekind of difference. My student days are over & all my grad degrees are completed. I'll waste no more space on r.a.s. since this is off topic. If you still have any rebuttals or comments; please send directly to Mark, myself or any other posts to continue this "non-sim" discussion....Tia Cheers Thom_j. > >thom j. is welcome to express his (very) humble opinion, but i did mention > >that i'm a grad student in neuropathology and could be expected to know > >something as elementary as that. it's not really the kind of thing you "have > >an opinion" on; many studies have verified it as a fact. i don't think it's
