If you could improve on GPL, what would you change?
Personally, I'd add in some weather effects.
Second, I'd fine tune the detail of the buildings, especially at
Monza, to look more like they do in SBK.

Wish list: what would you change in GPL?
Posters listed improvements they wanted in GPL: weather, Direct3D or OpenGL support, a coaching tool, ghost laps, more tracks, better collision detection, solid trackside objects, replay editing, pit stops, F2 and F3 racing modes, an AI slider and a Linux server. Yves Menard explained how to unlock hidden cockpit views via player.ini, and discussion covered pit stops in 1967 and spectating online races.

H'mmm, I never get time to look at the buildings anyhow.... If I
did, I would be straight into the next amco!!!
WX would be nice, but not at the expense of frame rate.... maybe
later eh!

I would like support for D3D or OpenGL. Also perhaps a "Tutor" type
program that would look at your replay and say something like "Ok.
You lost it in this corner because you were still braking hard when
you turned. You can fix that by 1) braking earlier. 2) adjusting
this, 3) adjusting that" etc etc. Might sound like a stupid question
but does either of the manual that came with the Sim really explain
all that stuff or does it just kinda say "This moves weight here".
Not very good at RTFM'ing myself. Keep falling asleep or daydreaming

This is certainly in the un-necessary eyecandy department, but....
I would love to see the GPL driver heads bob back and forth and left/right
like they do in GP2, it always amazed me in GP2 how real the other drivers
looked. The GPL cars and drivers have a cool graphics detail where you
can actually see the driver arms and steering turn as the wheels turn, but
the driver heads look a bit like scale model cars/drivers without any
head-movement or bobbing to the g-forces or bounces of the car. This is
especially noticeable when the car flips upside down and it almost looks
like the car is bouncing on the driver's head :P
Like I said though, this is being really, really picky as long as we're
talking about wishlists, I never really notice it in the important part
of the simulation which is in the driving of GPL, only when watching replays
do I notice the heads.

If I had the ability to persuade Papyrus to do the first I would have them
recreate either the original Can-Am series, the Targa Florio of the 1960's

If it was a matter of improving the existing product I would simply like to
see the Cooper and Honda cars depicted more correctly (rather than using the
Brabham and Eagle), a simple method of selecting individual AI entrants for
each GP and a SAVE GAME facility.

a) True D3D or OpenGL rasterizer, no more beta.
b) Fixed the collision detection for online racing.
c) No more trackside objects that are simple billboarded bitmaps that have
no substance. Utterly ruins the experience if you***up and slide
through the grass and then through a large object that looks like its there
but isn't. If you dont want to put it as a 3D object and its inside the
"invisible walls", then just dont put it in. :?
d) Fix the tree billboards so that they dont look bad when you get close to
them.
e) Instead of writing GPL2, put out some new track and car packs for say the
cars/tracks of the Mario/Emmo/et al era. :)
r) Release information on track and car file structures and how they work so
that people like Paul Hoad who have been working on track/car editors have
an easier time.
g) For fluff, when viewing a replay have the option of converting that
replay to an avi or mpeg file. Now that would be killer.
h) I think rest of my "wants" have been addressed by Papyrus in the GPL1.1
patch. :)
Very good idea, especially when so many 3D cards _don't_ support 3Dfx.
Good idea. I wouldn't mind seeing a Directors feature, for the replay,
so that we could edit them.

The ability to race against someone else's replay would be superb. In fact
combining ghost laps could revolutionise offline racing... and make some
programmer's life hell, I'm sure :-)
Other things on my mind for a while...
1) More than 2 initials in chat! Frequent "same initial" clashes occur.
2) The ability to edit replay camera views. Flanker (Su27 sim) has
possibly the best mission recorder in the world, and the ability to edit
the recorder views is brilliant. Something similar for GPL would be great.
3) I'd *really* like a better way of IDing other drivers in racing. A
split helmet (left/right sides different colours?) or something similar
would help. Or even something as unrealistic but useful as the toggleable
ID labels in Falcon4.

In what way were pit-stops not done per-se? Even looking only at the
Lotus team there were several succesful stops in '67 - for example
Hill's at Silverstone, then again Hill at the Nurburgring. Without
pitstops history would also have been deprived of Clark's stunning
Monza drive.
For online racing too they could be beneficial, allowing people to
choose between nursing a mildly damaged car and pitting, rather than
as at present choosing an undamageable car, the "penalty" of instant
Shift-R or the race being over.
Seems like a fair idea.
Cheers!

Actually it moves pretty accurately IMHO.
Try to change your default cam to the side-pod. It's cameras that were not
in the final release of GPL, so I don't remember what # they are. It's a
camera placed about 2feet behind the driver to the right, at the same level
as his head. You can clearly see how accurate the head physics are, in both
acceleration and braking, and into the turns.
Everything done by the 3d***pit somehow is from the head's accurate
physics, since the camera moves in the same way as the head in GPL. That's
why you see the***pit moves on the screen in-car. So IMHO it's pretty
good :)>

Whilst pit stops were not a mandatory function until Ecclestone decided that
they should be so, they were actually a normal part of Grands Prix.
Fangios stunning victory at the 'Ring in the 250F Maserati occurred after a
pit stop and Clarks drive at Monza in 1967 are just two that immediately

oh, god. . . .
sorry, but I don't see that in D. Hacker's _Bedford Handbook_, the Turabian
manual, Strunk & White, or in the MLA handbook--
Can you give me a source? All mine indicate that the apostrophe IS indeed
required for possessive (given the usual and well-known exceptions). I do
know that in recent decades, British models have been moving away from
over-punctuation (you see far fewer commas separating clauses, conjunctions,
etc., in British academic articles, for example, than you will in U.S.
journals).
Maybe that's it. In any case, this thread has become (become?!) tiresome.
Since I don't believe you're the type to relax your grammar policing effort,
I'm now relaxing my attempts to tell you that that effort is futile, and
often rude and almost always beside the point. My tablet's getting in the
way of the Momo.

Fascinating information - that belongs into alt.usage.english, not
rec.autos.simulators. BTW, the only printed matter I could find that
has genetives without an apostrophe is the First Folio edition of
"Mr. William Shakespeares [sic] Comedies, Histories, & Tragedies",
published in 1623. Novels from the nine***th century already show the
modern use of the apostrophe for possessives.

And how much fun that would be! :)
Wrrrroooooommmmmmmmmmmmm - kreeeeeeek - chrrrr - chRRRRR - klonk.
Btw, the new Alfa Romeo with the button shifter (the one that Jean
Todt is doing TV ads for) has an auto-double-declutch feature in real
life.
Why exactly do you want to turn it off?

Could be the ultimate realism, paired with realistic gearbox-failure
:-)
The guys with clutch pedal would have alotta fun, I guess.
I've no idea, if I could drive that thing. But I wanna try it.

: for ultimate realism you'd also need a force feedback h-shifter...
: so that you couldn't push it into gear until it actually goes
: into gear, and you can feel the graunches as you mis-time shifts,
: feel the increasing stickiness and crunching as you overheat and
: destroy all the dog-rings in the simulated gearbox, etc. :)
I think that with ultimate realism, when you crashed, your force
feedback steering-wheel would break your wrist and the pedals (also
forcefeedback), would surge forward sheering your ankles.
Perhaps we can live without ultimate realism in force-feedback.

Improve the realism of the AI. The unrealistic acceleration they get
now when we get really fast is not the way to do it :o). Remove the
feature where the AI automatically gets faster as we get faster,
replace it with an AI setup...
Three different chat-windows when online. One where everybody receives
chat (good for race information from for example the host). One where
only those in pit receives the chat (so, if you're in the pit, just
chat away). One where you direct the chat to a certain driver.
Remove the chase view, it's a sim for crying out loud :o).
A feature where you could preset the grid, both online and offline.
Add a feature so you can connect to an online race as a viewer. The
next viewers who connects to the race gets the first viewers ip and
connects to that computer instead, until that viewer host is full,
then just let the viewers become viewer hosts. The race host only
supports race data to the first viewer connected. I'm not going to
explain the whole implementation here, the developers can figure it
out by themself or write me :o).
Use a very simple physics model for the AI, so _we_ get all the fps we
need, cause the AI only have to look realistic, not feel realistic
:o).
Implement a feature so the sim can record how we drive and then let
the sim use this information to let the AI drive the way we do; same
racing line, braking points, turn-in points, apex, acceleration, top
speed. I raced Alison Hine, Alan Orton, Asgeir Nesoen online in an F2
race yesterday, and they are around my lap times. I would love to race
F2 AIs offline driving like these drivers, especially when there's no
F2 races online...
Remove the other cars tire squelling, especially if tire squelling is
used as a help for substituting g-forces. I really dont like this
feature online, especially noticable when you're trying to outbrake
someone and they lock their brakes. It makes outbraking unrealisticly
hard, IMO.
Fix the sound ques... As of now you're at optimum grip when the tires
squel during cornering, but you're at optimum braking when the tires
do not squel??? I would like it to be more consistent. Since we have
no feel of g-forces I suggest they do the tire squelling like in GP2
(the optimum grip is at a certain tire squel volume/spectra in
relation to the engine volume, for you who haven't driven GP2).
Only save driver input for replays and resimulate when the replay is
played. This makes for replay file sizes a 10th of current (see GP2
for inspiration :o)).
This will due for now... Dont know about rain, the F1 cars are as hard
to drive as is, so rain would just make it ridiculous, which makes me
think the physics need a bit polish... after that, rain would be nice
:o).

GPaL, if and when it comes out, will help you do
this
even better. :?
Maybe, but nonetheless you are clogging up bandwidth with chat anyways, so
perhaps it should be saved for the SpyBoy interface instead?
No, add the ability to set up your own viewpoint for the perspective that
works best. It may be a decent attempt at simulating 1967 GP racing on a
PC, but the PC has many inherent weaknesses and limitations that are imposed
on it. If a driver can run better and cleaner in chase view, or rollbar
view, etc than he can in***pit view, then I'm all for it.
Now, that would be a nice feature.
Why in the first place? I highly doubt there is a large audience for
viewing a online racing with a bunch of yahoos in it anyways. And
personally, I'd rather be racing than watching someone else's race.
But nonetheless, your entire scheme (and I've read it on your page) doesn't
work the way you envision it. Especially considering it would require that
the GPL server hand over all data (through the internet) to the first viewer
even if he can't or the server can't handle the load, in addition to
handling the load of the actual racers. Only basic way you'd be able to do
this maybe is to have a dual server mode that both have access to the same
data, then one could be the racer's server and the other the observer server
(which can lag behind slightly, does not have to have the exact up to second
info) then the observer server can piecemeal info out to the viewers.
I disagree here.
Why? They can also be used to monitor how your opponent is braking too
When ever I can't continue in a race, I stick around and watch the
battles. So, you can assume that there will be a few of us that would
love to view league races as a spectator :) Plus, you can't say that
there is no interest in watching an online race from non drivers till
such a thing has happened in the first place. Then we would have a
better idea of the numbers.
With Roger Wilco, if I'm hosting a chat session with my IP and everyone
else logs on, everything is fine and dandy.. When it's time to log off,
RW will find the best connection out of the remaining connections and
seamlessly connect everyone to that IP. For viewing online racing, this
might be a good thing to check out.

I believe GPaL will be the solution for this. You can also use AITweak
for this.
Fantastic idea, especially the pit-chat. Very irritating to see all
the text while driving.
Absolutely. Some of the famous hotlappers use this view (Woeger for
example). I can't help it but I feel this is not really fair, I too
find it easier driving from the outside view. But I NEVER use it
because it is totally unrealistic. Personal thing I guess.
Enter GPaL!
Also a great idea. But randy, don't postpone 1.1 until this is
implemented please, we can wait for these features until the 1.2 patch
:)
I think that the physics model of the AI is simplistic now. They look
like a little bit real now, if you drop the physics of the AI even
more they will look like stupid drone cars...
You mean the ghost car feature like we've seen in F1RS? Would be nice.
Untill that, try Spy Girl, a nice utility to merge two replay files to
one. Just so you can see how you drive compared to others.
Problem with spy girl now is that you can only use replay files from
training mode, so you'll need some training replays from your
hero's...
You mean you don't want to hear the tire squeeling of other cars? Why
not, it's realistic isn't it?
I think that the car has the optimum grip just before you hear the
tires squeeling. Brake until squeeling and get just a little bit of
the brakes for optimum braking. I'll re-read my Carroll Smith books
again to see if this is right.
I think that is what happens just now, only driver data is saved.
Juha, author of GPLDump can fill us up on this one I believe...
Rain takes waaay to much processor time if it's realistic...
All in all, some wonderfull ideas from you for the soon to come 1.2
patch :)))

If this will be in GPaL, then great :o).
I can wait for it to appear in GPL2, I'm patient :o).
Not necessarily :o).
No, I dont mean the ghost feature found in F1RS, and Viper Racing, and
TOCA (both 1 and 2, I think) :o). You know normal offline racing,
where you race the AI cars. Now imagine those AI cars driving like
real sim racers from all over this planet. How should a feature work
that make the AI race like other sim racers do. Well, just let the
simulation record the behaviour of those sim racers, record a couple
of starts, and a couple of laps, then add this information with the
AIs racing behaviour (passing, lapping, etc). You will then get AI
that race the racing line of the real sim racers, brake where they do,
have their corner speed, acceleration and top speed, and have the AIs
normal racing behaviour (passing, lapping, etc).
I doubt it is, especially when you're sitting just in front of a
screaming engine, I doubt you even hear your own tire squel. I have
raced real FFords after driving a lot in GP2, and my first surprise
was that I didn't here tire squel during hard cornering. This actually
made it harder for me to drive at first, before I learned to drive
with my ass :o). At the end of the day I was cornering so hard I lost
the rear in almost all corners, but there was no tire squel. I had by
then found the limits and by staying just below these I did some nice
lap times, but that's another story :o).
The only way I could tell I locked up my front wheels was by seeing
them stop spinning, and this was in an FFord, which doesn't have a
screaming V12 :o).
So if all this is true ;o), then the tire squel is only in GPL and
other sim racing titles to help us "feel" we are close to the grip
limit, and in my opinion this feedback is much better done in GP2, or
even GP1 for that matter. To Papys defense I can say that Geoff
Crammond (father of GP1 and GP2) has had a much longer time to perfect
this sound feedback :o).
I know how to brake in GPL... well, kind of :o). I have done a low
1:28 in the Ferrari at Monza :o).
The problem here is that you have no way of telling if you got off too
much from the brake, until you hit the yellow stuff (gravel), so that
would mean you suggest that I'll be pumping the brakes. A lot of
braking in GPL is also done during camber changes, which also suggest
pumping the brakes. As I've understood it this is not the way to brake
effiecently in a race car. In a real race car you brake by feel, in
GPL you brake by memory...
Driver data and driver input is two different things. Driver input is
steering wheel angle, throttle pedal angle, brake pedal angle and
gearing with timing info, so the info can be put back into the
simulation when the replay is resimulated. At 36 fps a 2 min lap
should only take around 60 kb.
Not really ;o).

Don't knock it until you've tried it. I've watched a few races I've hosted on
my work computer(no wheel, so no race), and it's a BLAST!

I know how you feel. However, the crashing at the start is from BAD
driving. Get rid the the bad drivers and you have a real race.
I still have a problem with the original 3x3 or 4x4 grids. I've cured
a lot of the initial crashing by using the staggered grid. Then, to
help with the crashing in or near T1, I have joined a racing league.
There is nothing that can be done while in open pick up races. So,
expect the crashes to happen and try to avoid them.

would be that the ridiculuous low rider setups simply don't work,
rather than having to put in an artificial ride height limit.

One thing: Make it run under Linux and help a decent
server infrastructure flourish. Instead they're wasting their time
on an NT port, sheesh...
