Would appreciate your input...

Is this true?
Also, do Desktop settings ( resolution & color depth ) affect
GPL's performance?

I don't believe that GPL will corrupt the calibration. GPL will read
the controls.cfg for a player when the game loads, and when you switch
players. GPL will only update its calibration if you recalibrate the
device by either switching joystick drivers or hitting the "Calibrate
joysticks" button explicitly. GPL will write the controls.cfg back out
if you hit the green button on the Options screen. If the device
doesn't seem calibrated, it's because something else is wrong, not
because GPL corrupted its calibration settings.
You can confirm this for yourself by making a copy your controls.cfg,
running the game as many times as you like, and then comparing the copy
to the current controls.cfg. They should contain the same data. (Note
that this file also contains your steering linearity setting, as well
as your control assignments, so if you change any of those, the files
will be different).
I don't think there are any performance issues, though I could be
wrong. Of course, there's always the usual 3Dfx bugaboo of trying to
use the mouse when your in-game resolution is higher than your desktop
resolution. I think it can also be a problem if your desktop
resolution is 640x480 (though this may only be if your bit depth is
also something other than 16-bit (or, maybe it's if the bit depth _is_
16-bit, I don't recall)).

running vroc through netscape, but with spyboy, it's only
happened a few times.
It only happens when going into gpl, you go
straight to the calibration screen. This may happen if you
move a controller while the game is loading.
