SCGT -- Sardian sucks

15 posts by 10 people · 01 Jul 1999 - 04 Jul 1999

Ive got to disagree with u there. Sardian is one of the easiest tracks in the game. Thats why its in the earlier championship. Just practice it .Thats all.

Pardon my profane alliteration, but I just can't seem to master the Sardian Park track. The best I can do in qualifying with a mildly-modified GTQ 911 is dead-last with the AI difficulty set to Max. I've been doing a lot of GPL lately, so I fired up SCGT feeling confident and***y, and was promptly humbled by this track. Any tips on setups for this track? I've tried all kinds of different things, with varying success -- but nothing truly satisfactory, IMO. -- JB
Was this running GTQ series with the Advanced Options Editor, not for example GT3 with an improved GTQ car? Can't say really that the GTQ series is very hard, EVEN with realistic handling and max difficulty (though the other championships sure are!). What kind of laptimes are you making?

The first three turns will make or break you at Sardin Park. Its bery close to driving an autocross and that is how I treat it. I angle in under braking and make sure to almost make the car overturn so the other turns coming next appear bigger. The most important turn in this section is that last since if done right you will be wide open till jump. You can try to take these turns too hot and it hurts you time more then laying back a bit. I assume we're talking GTQ AI cars here... Sardian uesd to***me off too. I went away and practised at Mosport, geared my 911 kinda low, took most of the wing off and one day magically I was faster than the AI cars. Went back to Sardian, qualified P1 and won by 40 sec (and I spun three times during the race) on the short race. For me, the key to Sardian is the left sweeper/right hairpin combination near the end of the lap. The AI cars are terrible through there. Keep it floored in third for the left, shift to second, nail the brakes (buy ABS!), sharp and early right turn then floor it. I was making up a few seconds per lap on these corners. This was on Medium AI difficulty. Dale. -- ------------------------------------------------------- Remove SPORK to reply -------------------------------------------------------

Sorry everybody. My ISP's news server blew a gasket today. It was reporting that postings weren't being accepted. In reality, the server was actually caching the failed messages then released them a few hours later and... well you see the results. ok, we get the point. :) But I do agree with you about the left turn right hairpin combo and the lack of speed by the AI through them. To me it seems that Sardian Park is a track with "combo corners". Take for instance the first 3 corners of the track. If you come in too hot to the first turn it leaves slow, and in a bad position for turn 2, forcing the car to shift weight extremely fast and voilently, losing all traction, then you do the same thing immediatley after turn 2 for turn 3, and you need to get off of 3 well so you can go full throttle through turns 4 and 5 in 3rd and 4th gear respectivly. then you have the 2 turn combo after the jump and downhill section. You have to be extremely careful here not to come in to fast or you will either throw too much weight to the right when you hit the first left hander and possibly lose control, or end up in the sand at the bottom in the right hander. But you can't come in too slow or you will lose a TON of time there, and risk the back end coming around as you try to punch it a little early out of the right hander. Then you come upon turns 9 and 10, the ones you descibed in your post. Again a very important combo to nail every time because of the fact that you CAN gain a lot of time on the AI here. Keeping it running it at high revs in 3rd is probably the best, but DON'T get caught braking too late for turn 10, or an otherwise great lap is tossed out the window, and you have to start all over again. So try to nail those combos and try to set up a car that handles a lot of quick weight transfer really well.

You right about the long left followed by the hairpin, even in GT2 the opposition are about 10-15mph slow round it that I am.

First off, thanks to you and to everyone else who has responded to this call for help. Let me clarify, though: My problem is not a matter of mastering the track, I don't think -- it's more a matter of getting the car setup to handle properly at the right points. I've turned 0:55:77 laps in a fully-modified GTQ BMW M3 -- maybe not fair to compare that to a slightly-modified GTQ 911, but I do know I can definitely handle the track at speed. In comparison to the M3, the Porsche 911's handling and balance just doesn't seem as adaptable, and I can't find a good setup. Just so you know what I'm driving, I've got the following mods, but my best lap time with this car at Sardian park is a 1:00:44 lap in qualifying (which is good for last place on the grid): Level 2 Weight Reduction Level 3 ABS Level 2 Suspension upgrade Level 1 Muffler and pipes upgrade Level 1 Tires These mods give me a 287 Hp GTQ Porsche 911 with 261 ft/lbs of torque, weighing in at 2768 lbs. At any rate, I can be fast on this track, but in trying to run a GTQ career season with the opponent difficulty set to MAX, I just can't get the Porsche set-up right for the Sardian track. I was able to win both the pole and the race in the first event at Chatham in the 911 (again, with difficulty set to MAX), but I just can't get the Porsche to run fast at Sardian Park. This is why I'm specifically interested in setup tips for the 911 -- I really don't think my problem here involves mastering driving techniques for the track or lack of familiarity/practice on this circuit, so I'm not really looking for driving advice. I can snag the pole and win easily with the AI difficulty set to medium, so I think I have the practice and track time issues down pat. Lots of tech info about about setups and such is available for GPL on the Web (and in this NG), but it seems that all I can find for SCGT is eye-candy. Eye-candy is great, don't get me wrong, but more technical stuff like setups and such would be nice, I think. -- JB On Thu, 1 Jul 1999 10:16:11 -0700, "THOMAS A BASTIAN"

first off, "soften" up the suspension. Then set your tires to soft and 27.6psi in both front and rear. Also play around with the weight distribution and brake balance. Get the weight to about 49/50 and have the brake balance slightly toward the rear of the car. Racer X Veteran Sim Racer Victory Lane- http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Speedway/1423/

I'll give it a try and let you know -- I've been reducing the tire pressure going for more grip, but maybe I really need better responsiveness. I actually like the the 911 a little tail-heavy; it makes it more tossable. The M3 is better when it's very close to 50/50, but the 911 seems sluggish when balanced that way (to me, anyway). I'll change the tire pressure and fiddle with the balance, though, just to see. Thanks! -- JB
