GPL 1.1 Crack

No-CD patch for GPL 1.1 on European versions

A user asked how to apply the 1.1 patch to a cracked GPL executable, drawing accusations of piracy until others explained that non-US versions require the CD in the drive even after a full install. Posters debated whether posting a no-CD patch was appropriate given Papyrus's support in the group, and someone eventually posted a hex-edit recipe for the German 1.1 executable. The thread also had some joking about Americans assuming everyone is from the US.

Hi! Please, how can I apply the patch 1.1 on my cracked GPL.exe? I only found the 1.1 crack for the spanish version. Help!
Why do you need a crack for GPL? Buy the game, do a full install, and there's no need for the CD. Most Sierra published games do not require a CD if you do a full install. I only wish other companies would follow suit. Alanb
If you own the UK version of GPL you must have the cd in the drive before you can play. This is quite annoying. I think he means the 'no-cd crack'. After applying this crack you don't have to insert the cd anymore. 3 days after the 1.1 patch came out, the 1.1 no-cd patch came out, and I immediately installed this. Nothing wrong with that I believe. Andre On Fri, 30 Jul 1999 20:11:24 +0100, "Tim \"Calm Down\" Wheatley" >copy GPL.EXE from the CD, if you don't have the CD you better get out and >buy the game
How about - (Re)install GPL 1.0 from (legally purchased) game CD. Apply 1.1 patch as directed. says...

And I'm supposed to know where you're from? You never said you were from Europe, did you? Maybe if you give all the pertinent information about what you're requesting and who you are, you wouldn't get such a response. Alanb
ahha, that's great man, well done, but you can't put the 1.1 on a cracked gpl.exe, nevermind, I wont help the guys in future -- TIM "Calm Down" WHEATLEY. The Homemade HondaFreek! Tim, I see where you got your name from. :) You posted in response to my post, bashing me for not being "educated" about the different versions of GPL. However, the original poster, who wanted to know about a CD crack, did not say where he was from. I figured he was from the States, and thus my comment to him. Could he not have said-- "Hi, I'm from France. Over here we need the CD to play GPL. Anyone know where I can get a crack so I don't have to insert the CD?"? That would've solved in, pretty much, eh? One would think that if something is different, and that the reason it is different is because the person lives in Europe, that that person would disclose such essential information in order that the post could be understood. I really thought it was someone who had a pirated version of the game or something. Well, it doesn't matter, and there is certainly no reason to scream about it. Quite a touchy fellow, are you? :) Alanb
With all pleasure I want to post the UK 1.1 no-cd patch for you all in alt.binaries.simulators.autos, but is that illegal? Andre

But I don't think it is wise announcing it in here. Remember, Papyrus provide us with great support in this public newgroup. I know I wouldn't like it if I was Papyrus..... So, ask yourself, "Is this a smart move?".... Remco
Well, I wondered about this. Why did they put the cd protection only on the UK version? It's very irritating that you must put the cd in the drive everytime you want to drive. I can't think for one reason why they would be against the no-cd patch. But you're right, don't want to offend Papyrus in any way, so I won't post it. Still curious what their reason for a UK cd-protection could be however.... Andre

>Still curious what their reason for a UK cd-protection could be >however.... It's not a question of putting in a copy protection just for the UK, it's actually a question of putting it in every other version except the US version.
it's a government ***, aliens are coming, and they see CD shapes as some sort of weapon, now what papy figure is that if they keep CD's in the drive, the aliens won't be able to get hold of them and mutilate us... oops, sorry, i think i shouldnt of watched that film last night! -- TIM "Calm Down" WHEATLEY. That's right! But, you know... the honest people in US would never even have the idea of pirating the game, but us europeans... ;-) I really don't know why every version of GPL except the US wants the CD inserted. BTW, does anybody know, where I can get the noCD patch for the german version of GPL 1.1 ? (No, I don't want to copy it, it just gets annoying having the GPL CD inserted all the time :-)) Peter Vienna, Austria

Yes, but do most people REALLY look at the sender's e-mail address? No, they probably just see a fellow sim fan, and try to help them out. It's also possible that some people don't know(or forgot) that the UK version needs the CD to run... Eldred p.s. Although I personally don't see whay ANY game still needs the CD to run. With the proliferation of CDrom burners, this is a wasted effort anyway... It's now just an ANNOYANCE to paying customers... __ Put your message in a modem, and throw it in the ***-sea... remove SPAM-OFF to reply.

Austrian, actually. ;)
Don't do it Andre

Thanx! That does the trick - very easy ! BTW, I write in English because I don't want to get bashed by the English speaking majority for using German. Peter Vienna, Austria not equal). >Yes, but do most people REALLY look at the sender's e-mail address? Well, I do. :) Some addresses don't give clues (aol.com might be anywhere; *.net is also inconclusive), but I'm always interested in figuring out where my correspondents are located. To know this often helps understanding. Sure. What I disliked about Alan's response was the authoritative statement that "there's no need for the CD" if you have the full version installed (not true unless you have the US version), coupled with the implicit claim in the next posting that he had no chance to figure out what continent the messages in question came from. So I tried to indicate how one can easily determine the poster's location. But it's no big deal anyway. I agree wholeheartedly. -- Wolfgang Preiss \ E-mail copies of replies to this posting are welcome.
