MGPRS2: Rant

Frustrations with Monaco Grand Prix Racing Simulation 2

A poster complained that MGPRS2's throttle felt on/off and its handling dead. Defenders blamed gear ratios, pedal axis setup and patches, while many others including ymenard and SpeedFreek agreed the physics lacked momentum and feel compared with GPL. The thread attracted mockery of Ubisoft's engine and a couple of apparent trolls.

Firstly, I can't understand how this game has so many people who champion it. I can't understand whether I have some controller setup problems (it works in all my other sims OK) or whether the game is at fault... I can't accelerate with wheel-spin help off because the throttle is on/off rather than gradual, causing me to spin my wheels at every turn. The brakes feel sloppy, and then bite too strongly all of a sudden. The steering feels horrible, and I'll be turning a corner when all of a sudden it snaps into a canned spin for no apparent reason. And when you combine all these with the pathetic physics, you get one piece of shit game. Bring on GP3... -- DB --
Graham H 12 Aug 1999#485639
The game is NOT at fault here!!! Gear ratio's are way, way, way....... too low!!! 1st gear especially! Gear ratios are set totally wrong! <The steering feels horrible You probably have steering ratio too high or too low..... wrong wing settings...... steering sensitivity too high or too low. spin for no apparent reason. Too low wings..... too high steering ratio, too high steering sensitivity of shit game. The physics are great in my opinion, at least the most advnaced until now, GP2 was fantastic but if you drove and 1994 car and a 1997 car and expected no differnce then you obviosly need to learn something about the sport. Well, its one thing I agree with you on! One answer explanis all your questions! You are not evn bothering to download or make a PROPER setup! or you are just using some cheapo joystick or pad! Come on man! Get it together!
DB 12 Aug 1999#485640
writes If the physics are so good then why do the cars behave weird when coming to a rest after a spin? It's as if they have no momentum. I have a TM Nascar Pro FYI, and I have tried downloading setups. I'll try heightening the gear ratios on them and see what it feels like. Cheers. -- DB --
ymenard 12 Aug 1999#485641
great ? wow the game engine is one of the most unrealistic I have ever seen. Of course it's better than F1RS in it's physics engine, you actually feel the car a little, but compared to any other sim on the market you feel nothing. The whole deal with the tyre slip angle is not fun. Look at how the cars act in F1 today, and try to compare just to the feeling you have looking at a replay from in-car in MGPRS2. Totally false. It doesn't model properly the 3d axis, the game engine can't really model any 3d elevation, banking or camber. The sound is weak, the menu interface is weak, not even sound in the replay. Game service is a farce, the AI is stupid and races in an erratic way. Graphics are cartoony, no FIA license. blah I can continue for days you know :) OF1R has a better sensation of modern Formula 1 than MGPRS2. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... SpeedFreek 12 Aug 1999#485642
I agree totally..... The game is lame... I have set it up well, got good setups, and can race pretty quickly with it. But the physics feel "dead"... the cars don't feel like the high powered thoroughbreds they are supposed to represent. There is no momentum. The AI is pretty stupid, and the experience just doesn't cut it with me. The replay mode is a really sad attempt too.... From SpeedFreek

WELL, I PUT CONTROLLER 50%SENSITIVE AND "ANTI-SPIN" AND "ABS" OFF. THEN I DONT SEE BIG DIFFERENT FOR GP2 WITH "STEERING HELP". BUT THERE IS 1000% MORE SETUP CHOICES IN mgpRS2, SO THAT IS *** SIMFANS MUST. THRUSTMASTER SPRINT WHEEL WORK EXELLENT WITH RS2. "If you cant drive fast, drive slowly"
Grah 13 Aug 1999#485829
Two things: 1. if you have a wheel with pedals like the Logitech one (very good) make sure to go into the controller setup and set it up for seperate axis for the pedals. When running MGPRS2 with a single axis I found it impossible to get rid of wheelspin. Using seperate axes fixed this. 2. if you use anti-skid it prevents the car from doing small slides. Once the car does slide there is no correcting it. Playing without the anti-skid option the car slides more easily but you have the chance to correct it, before it gets out of controll. enjoy yourself Graham

Ok, lets have another try: Well either the gravel or grass or something has slowed you down, or if you are still ontrack, there is not alot of momentu, I'll give you that, but no momentum is not correct in my view. Heighten 1st gear into the high 20's, his IS a bug in RS2....... the gas is too sensitive when the ratios are set too low with aids off....... also, don't rop to 1st gear, only go as far as second, even ni F1 1st gear is only for starting, just as in road cars!

Where in the real world can you change the spring rates by using percentages. This game is totally unrealistic. As far as I know it's driving model is based on some fantasy driving game called POD. So how anyone can say that it is like driving a real F1 car is beyond me. >WELL, I PUT CONTROLLER 50%SENSITIVE AND "ANTI-SPIN" AND "ABS" OFF. Without question. UBI couldn't program their way out of a wet paper bag. But that's why they keep releasing "new" games using the same totally faulty ***program they started with years ago. Most companies will reuse something that's working. UBI reused the most buggy program ever released. HA! What a joke! You forgot to mention the 20 degree dead zone in the steering. (For those of you about to crawl up my ass: It's a tough call between CPR and UBICrap. But at least some things in CPR worked. And the physics and driving thrill make it all worthwhile. Nothing in F1RS or MGPRS is good.) -- Mark Jeangerard www.soundchaserweb.com New Mexico USA

Mark, your my idol :) Finally after years of effort r.a.s. has turn on my side and understand how Ubisoft is taking us so not seriously and laughs in our faces about their supposed sims. That remark when F1RS got released would had made you a troll, but I kept my opinion and based them on facts (limitations of the game engine and physics, etc..) Btw, Montreal is very crappy in how Ubisoft models it. It's a shame, the company is about 20minutes from the track :) -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... I will agree with you here. There seems to be a problem reading my CH Pro Pedals as I also experience the engine immediately accelerating to redline even though I am only using half throttle. Anti-spin fixes this but I would rather run without it. Other than this I have no other problems with the game...but GPL it is not. Perhaps someday we will see a package that uses that beautiful engine. Mike
>The physics are great in my opinion, at least the most advnaced until now, I must assume that you haven't tried GPL. Give it a go, if you like realism in your driving model you won't be dissappointed. It is far more advanced than MGPRS2. Mike

I didn't have this problem with MGPRS2 at all, but I still found I was quicker with the anti-lock brakes and anti-spin turned on. I agree that the physics are nowhere near as advanced as GPL, but they have done a great job in the graphics of the Monaco circuit. In some ways it was a disappointment when I played it in stereo 3D - the track became an incredibly detailed origami model instead of something that looked like a photograph of Monaco! Fascinating to see how they'd put it all together though!

Nothing in F1RS or MGPRS is good.) You possibly had some points in this post, until you got HERE. All I can say is *PLEASE!* Better beware while hotlapping with your CPR for Hell's Grannies that are disguised as the AI. Don't know how many times I blasted them in the backside, not seeing them until the last possible second when its too late. And then, there is no damage to them to boot! Granted F1RS is flawed. That's a given. But the AI aren't nearly as bad (slow), and there will be some measure of damage if you were to nail them. Let's keep this all in perspective now! A tough call it isn't, by any means. -- Chuck Kandler #70 K&S Racing http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/thepits/195 The box said "Windows 95 or better", so I installed LINUX!
You're right. It's not a tough call. I can run in CPR by myself for hours on end. I can't even get to the track in F1RS. If I do it's about three turns before I go to watch reruns of Laverne and Shirley. Boring doesn't even begin to describe it. If the car responded in any way that was interesting, challenging or realistic it might be worth the effort. What I am probably most upset about though, is the fact that they have all the makin's of a company that could turn out a modern F1 sim but refuse to. Why? -- Mark Jeangerard www.soundchaserweb.com New Mexico USA > > (For those of you about to crawl up my ass: It's a tough call between CPR > > and UBICrap. But at least some things in CPR worked. But if I'm forced to race alone, as you state is your case with your CPR, then *that* would really get boring quick! Let's see.....Start->Settings-> ummm->Control Panel->Remove old programs..... You're right. We need an F1 (modern) sim with GPL style physics. That could be a world beater, if done correctly. GPL PHYSICS???? WHO BUY THAT GAME THEN?? PAPYRYS HAVE MUCH TO LEARN UBISOFT PROGRAMMERS, HOW TO REAL SIM ARE MADE!!! GPL HAS BEAUTIFUL GRAPHICS ( BUT NEED FOR SPEED TOO) BUT WHERE IS REAL SPEED FEELING?!?! NO SHIT, NOT GPL.
I beg to differ on this one, and I'm a kinda fan of F1RS too. But GPL physics in the sense of 3d physics are a vast improvement over the "flat" feeling of 2d physics present in these other titles. I think what you and many others have a problem with is the "difficulty factor" inherently present with learning a new driving model. Should a scaled-back physics option be available as well, it should be fairly pleasing to both camps I would think. -- Chuck Kandler #70 K&S Racing http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/thepits/195 The box said "Windows 95 or better", so I installed LINUX!

"Schuma" wouldn't be related to "Schumi" by any chance? Looks like another troll to me! As it happens I think the feeling of speed in GPL is *fantastic* compared to MGPRS2, at the risk of feeding the troll! If you want a feeling of (insane) speed, try Wipeout - if you want something approaching realism, which IMHO is much scarier(!) try GPL.

I have OF1R with Patch 2 installed. I'm unable to change the pit strategy in the garage. You should be able to navigate the pit strategy using "arrow" keys, but I'm unable to change anything. This is in the Race setup, where you should be setting the pit strategy. All I have is the default, which seems to be one-stop. I tried both "realistic" and "relative" fuel/tire wear settings with no change. I've tried different race lengths with no changes either. I'm running simulation mode with expert level difficulty. Further, during the race, the car is not directed to the pits on the lap indicated in the pit strategy by default. If I drive in the pitlane, it simply does a drive thru without stopping. If I indicate a pit stop call using period (.), as per the manual, there is no effect. I never get "pulled" into the pitlane and again, if I drive in, all I get is a drive thru. How do you get pit stops and pit straegies to work... Am I doing something wrong, or did patch 2 break it? Does is work for anyone else? Ed Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know.
