Too many GPL-Servers

Too many near-empty dedicated GPL servers

Markus Stiepel argued that after GPL 1.1 too many dedicated servers left drivers scattered one or two per race. Some agreed and recommended leagues; others said the servers were valuable, especially for Europeans, and that drivers should coordinate and try longer races. Eldred, who hosted several servers, set one to run full Grand Prix-length races.

Hi all! Since we got GPL1.1....we got too many dedicated servers IMHO. On the one hand, it's a great thing to be able to race online whenever u want, on the other hand, the human beeing needs a guiding hand, whatever it does. This is not given when you join a dedicated server as no "Boss" is present to lead the event. But what disturbs me most is: 1/20..... 1/20......1/20.....2/20......1/20...and so on.........I really don't know a solution besides maybe ppl must make appointments in GSB about where to go next. No offense to the guys running these servers, it's all well meant and they're doing a great job, but I hope I made my point. Cya all (and more!) on track! Markus
says... The only real solution is to run in a league that has its own dedicated server where all of the league members can meet to run practice races. I've been in many "F3" clean starts. I would also assume the F2's and F1's. But only in League races. > Err... care to host some occasional private races? I agree with you on the 1/20, 1/20, 2/20, 1/20 situation. Too many of them. Solution, join a league.
I disagree ... as soon as you join the server with a mate and maybe a 3rd person (so that it is 4/20), a running for the server starts! another point is that GPL is much more global: you would not join a quake-server located in australia from europe, won't you? but with GPL lots of people do just that! for example: lots people from USA and australia join our GGPLC-server, which is located in germany. but you will only find a few of them around 9pm CET, when it is early afternoon in the USA or late at night in australia ;-) Lio

Hi Maaki, I don't think it's too many servers that is the problem. I think the real problem is that VROC has a reputation as a place where the drivers crash too much. It's sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy because this bad reputation keeps away the drivers who are considerate and are looking for some clean driving. I think the real answer to the problem is for the good drivers to get out there and race more often. You can't get rid of the rude drivers, but at least you can dilute their numbers! Also, remember that any non-dedicated server has to have at least one driver on it, so look for the ones without the 'D' flag in Spyboy. I managed to get a couple good races in tonight, but I'm sorry to say I haven't seen any IGPS-style clean starts. I miss them. *SNIFF* -A

Surely this is just a problem of ettiquette - often there are quite a lot of people in the paddock, all waiting to see which race everyone else will join. I've often found myself typing a message like "So where do you guys want to race then?" but no-one answers - the only people chatting seem not to be interested in racing. As soon as someone joins a race they all pile in there. Maybe we just need to talk to each other more?

The VROC crew and the hosts have done their job. It is now up to the drivers to join the races. Don't expect that things happen by themself. Work on it! Gather your friends, and flood the servers. Advertise. Make people join the races. Remco

whatever you call a 'full field' however ... most of the pre-1.1-races were modem- or ISDN-hosted and so the full field was only 5 or 6 drivers. the effect nowadays is that once there is a server just hosting the right track, everyone is there and voila! full field, i.e. 20 cars ... Lio

You ARE doing a good thing and I ,for one, THANK YOU. The problem is certainly not with those who put their time and effort into freely providing a place for the rest of us to race. It probably has far more to do with the tendency of people to travel in a pack and the inherent difficulties of finding a fun( read competative) race in a VROC type of environment given the range of skillls that folks have. Too bad GPL doesn't feature Grand Prix bracket racing :) :) David Erb (who is of the slow but steady school of racing--- a turtle in racing stripes) > It's strange - I (and I'm sure OTHER hosts) thought we were doing a GOOD thing > by hosting on high-speed connections. I've made similar posts at the VROC & GPL lists. It amazed me how others literally jumped down my throat for suggesting that there is something wrong with having all those remote server races with no one in them. Their point was that they could literally join any race at any track in a multitude of classes and race. My reply was and still is,that isn't racing. When I race online,I want to race against a large field of human drivers. There is no fun in running against 2 or 3 drivers. Spa with a small field. It's like running hot laps, and that I do off line. We've gone from one extreme to the other. And neither one is great. But if I had to choose,I would take the old way,no remote servers. At least you had full fields, even if you had to wait to find a race with an opening. And you were a lot less likely to disconnect if you were running mid pack, knowing that another race wasn't just around the corner. Joel Willstein

Another major problem (and for the life of me I can't figure out why this is so) is that people don't want to race Pro or Long races. many folks won't even run in Intermediate races. Then there's the bunch that think F2 or F3 is more fun than F1. Like I said before, the only viable solution ids to run in a league that has organized closed practices every day at a pre-set time. We did it in IGPS, and it worked out rather well. Three days a week was open practice, and two days was for closed league practice. 1) Learn how to drive at tracks other than Monza or Spa, or Watkins Glen. 2) Cowboy up and start drivin' in Long F1 races. 3) You're not going to win every race you drive in. 4) You're not even going to finish well in some of the races you drive in. I would gladly race Pro races, but given the varying quality of connection it's quite possible to get whacked on the first lap with no one doing anything wrong or impolite. Then you're screwed for the rest of the race. At least with intermediate, after the carnage at the first turn you can shift-R and pick up the pieces. Long races are also fine with me, but they're not going to be everyone's cup of tea. Some nights I just can't keep the required level of concentration that long, I'm just looking for a quick fix. I agree with you totally on pre-arranged races at pre-set times. That really is the only way things will work optimally. JMHO. Zog

The fact that one doesn't know all the tracks for all the classes doesn't apply to my post. lets just say I was refering to F1. There are enough empty remote server races available all the time so that if you can race at Monza,Spa,or the Ring, you're set Unfortunately, this isn't the case. Passworded races have the most number of drivers per race. Then if Alison hosts, everyone jumps in like it's something special. Because smaller field races are boring. I've run races at Monza,Watkins Glen,Zandvoort,& Rouen the last few nights with fields less than 6 cars, and after the 1st lap or two,you almost never see anyone. Some disconnect for one reason or another, then if you are either better or worse than the remaining cars,it's hot lap time. This isn't what online racing is all about. I rather wait for a full field. My latest tactic is to join what race I'm interested in,then if the field doesn't fill out by the time practice is over,I say bid farewell to the others, and head back to the chat room. Joel

Personally,I try to run in the Intermediate or Pro races,as most of the newbies stay away from them. But one thing that drives me nuts,is to be taken out at the start of a Pro race. But my personal favorite is to see a remote server host a GP at the Glen;108 laps. No one joins, and it runs the full race, waisting bandwidth. Joel Willstein
