Detecting and preventing cheating in NR2003 online

Mitch_A asked whether there was a reliable way to detect cheating after the Daytona replay. Jason Moyer said the cheat was setup-related and did not work in fixed-setup races, while others suggested a PunkBuster-style tool and debated the privacy of client-side checks. Posters also revealed that sim-mode setups could still be used in arcade races for extra speed.

Ok, we've determined cheating is happening (see McWhoms post) my question is other than viewing an extreme example like what that replay showed is their a reliable accurate way to determine if someone is actually cheating? Is that why cheating is just an accepted fact of Papy simracing? (and yes Don Wilshe Ive heard you go about this before here in the ng). If we cant accurately reliably determine if someone actually is cheating then why complain?. The only real answer is to choose the series you run in carefully and hope the admins have enough control to weed out suspected cheaters. I ran in a LAN event (N4 days) which was strictly monitored and funny enough no one dominated during the entire event. Coincidence or foul play. Seeing how we cant monitor closely then what other options are available? I'd love to hear a comment from a Papy guy like Eric Busch on ways to identify cheating. Mitch

At the end of a race, the app produced a report that is sent to RS and checked for *illegal* activities before the scoring was made official. Something like that, haven't heard much about it lately as my league is on hiatus, and AFAIK, no one in there was cheating to begin with... Other than that, its pretty much just called league racing, you let people you know and trust in and cast a watchful eye on any new members. That's about the best one could do I'd imagine.
that's called Spyware, no one really wants that from a third party product. If it was released by Papy though, that would be different. "SimRacer" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:SEuwb.9284$[email hidden]... >

I don't think they'll scope out the porn on your machine if that's what you're worried about...(and spyware is transparent/invisible, you install this on your own, in order to curtail the cheating, smarty pants). Outside of hosting dutuies, I don't think their app was anymore invasive than the crapped up redirector that OLR used to use. Of course you're above that too, huh? What you hiding on that machine of yours?
LOL Respected by who? I've never once used Raceserver. But, that's not the point. It's called privacy. Its nobody's business what is on my machine. I'm not hiding anything but it's still noone's business. If the app was incorporated by Papyrus, that's one thing. But to say I'm gonna let RS send back what is currently running on my computer or whatever their "TSR" is sending to their site is absurd. I dont know those people, why should I? I had the OLR redirector, btw, smart butt, and still use OLR. That's race specific information and I know who those folks are. The cheat/bug in question is setup related and does not occur in fixed races. To the best of my knowledge, the old RAM cheats do not work nor has anyone been able to demonstrate that they do. Jason
Well the change in the subject pretty much says it all. Can we get something like PunkBuster for this sim? Either from Papyrus or some other third party group. If we have something like this then maybe we can end some of this brainless cheating. So you're not a 3D-Shooter guy, eh? ;) It's an anti-cheat tool used (exclusively?) for FPS games. "Do you want to know more?" http://www.punkbuster.com l8er ronny
Agreed. It's not that they, or anyone, would in fact, hack your pc. It's that if they did, you'd know nothing about it. Never trust anything someone puts on your computer for free. :) -- Tim White "Phillip Malphrus, Jr." <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > incorporated by Papyrus, that's one thing. I guess I should have explained what PunkBuster was. But Ronny is correct. used for online FPS, like Counter Strike and such. Prevents cheating, and is updated often to prevent new cheats from getting in. It's not official, but the FPS community has always had much more open access to a games code, so things like PunkBuster have sprung up as community projects. I know some in this thread have already started the "I don't trust <fill in the blank here> to build this as they might spy on me" discussion. But honestly, we might need something like this to help with the cheating. Unless someone else has a better idea. (Of course I am saying this with absolutely zero knowledge as to how something like this would be programmed, nor the time to learn, so it is easy for me to say.) btg "Ronald Stoehr" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:bq04ag$su2$05$[email hidden]... > EldredP wrote: > >>Well the change in the subject pretty much says it all. > >>Can we get something like PunkBuster for this sim? Punkbuster would be nice. Personally I vote for having the Rating systems turned off. Well, maybe keeping the LPI rating alive. But as for the track ratings. Turn it off. Maybe the cheaters will flake off to some other game and cheat there. Last few weeks I've been racing N2002 and guys, if you like racing with out cheaters.. head back there...great racing going on!! Sure they race arcade but its great.. Oh heres a cheat that every one should know by now. You can use your sim set in arcade mode. Simply make a copy of your sim set and change sim to acd. There you go.. sim racing in arcade mode. Hope to see you guys back racing n2002.

I haven't race arcade in n2003, but as for N4 and n2002 the speeds are faster. I've already hit drafting speeds at Dega of 215mph. .The car handling is better since you're using your sim setup. The rule of thumb is.. have a great Sim setup you will have a great arcade setup. Have a bad sim setup, have a bad arcade setup. You can usually tell when someone is using a Hybrid set. They pull away in the turns. Bad thing is, once the set is converted to acd it can not be converted back to a sim. Arcade Hybrids were really big during the N4 days. Speeds were faster and handling was great! Some of the best racing I've ever seen and been involved in. Most of the people back then helped one another and shared setups. We could have 15 car drafts nose to tail. Countless lead changes. Usually we would run 20 lap races and would draft 15 and race the last 5. That helped out our LPI and most people finished the race and had a good time! The good ole days when racing nascar was fun. Now a days all we have are kids and sadly, adults flaming everyone in sight. Because of warp or most of the time, their own driving error. Or even a step further. I just left a Bristol race where the leader had the fastest car, and he was punting everyone in the turns. He wrecked most of the field.....ugh! To many forget this is a game. Folks who run open races are there to simply have some fun playing a game. Which leads back to what I said a few post back.. Lose the Track ratings but keep the LPI rating.

I think it was called the "Zombie" racing server. I ran it a few times. They had special arcade setups available for download. "Larry" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:vZLxb.17384$yM6.6859@lakeread06...

The problem with *anything* running on the client (aside from spyware/malware concerns) is that it could probably be hacked just as readily as the game itself. Maybe when Windows Longhorn comes along, things will get better, at least in this regard. If anyone is still making racing sims, that is. Gerald

I just hope NR2003 RUNS when Longhorn comes out. Presumeably, yes. And of course, the software would have to be written to take advantage of its security features. Whether or not any of its features will be of any benefit in preventing cheating, I have no information.
