I suggest you check it out right now...Told ya! (Sorry, couldn't help

Notable threadOfficial Grand Prix 3 website launched
Kenneth Verburg announced the official Grand Prix 3 website with new screenshots, press releases and a feature list. Meiji criticised the shots as looking like GP2 and read the '4+ player' network support as weak, prompting a debate about reading press releases. Others suggested FIA/FOCA licensing might forbid internet play, and some said it was too early to judge.
Automated summary.
Great... more shots that look like a bastardised GP2.01a 1998 edition and
some specs that cover *4+* Player network play. I'm sorry... 4+? Does this
mean we need a minimum of 4 or that 4 is the maximum he can guarantee right
now because of shoddy net code.
I'm even more worried now
M
I'm amazed you could deduce how poor the network code is with so
little information.... you must have incredible insight!!!!!!
>I'm amazed you could deduce how poor the network code is with so

The word is "hindsight" - just reflecting on "promised" v's
"delivered" in GP2.
Cheers!

You need to learn to read between the lines of press
releases. I used to write them as part of my job and what you say is
usually the absolute maximum you can get away with.
TF2 supports 32+ players, Quake 3 Arena supports the same, even GPL
supports a larger number of players than GP3 is predicted to so the only
fair assumption to make is the netcode is inefficient as the only reason to
limit to 4+ players is that with more it's horrifically slow.
In any case... where's the mention of TCP/IP play?

I don't say "999". 4+ in this case probably means 4 normally and 5 on a
good day :P
M
says...
The screenshots are software rendered and exhibit all the usual dreadful
artifacts:
Texture warping, only 256 colours, no bilinear interpolation, small
number of polygons, no sky texture, no sky gradient, no dynamic lighting,
no atmospheric hazing etc.
I'm surprised Microprose unveiled this product now, and especially that
they chose to use Monaco as the track, this is notoriously one of the
hardest tracks to do well, and the proliferation of armco, trackside
scenery and buildings, serve to highlight all the problems of software
rendering.
They should have waited for hardware support or used a more suitable
track such as Silverstone.

Acutally considering the launch venue, I'd have thought silverstone would
have been a better idea anyway.

And you need to get some "facts" before you shoot your mouth off. The
game is no where near completion (unlike Q3A or TF2)... so we really
have no idea whats actually going to make it into the finally version,
do we?
I'm getting quite a chuckle from everyone proclaiming the fall of
Geoff Crammond and GP3 based on 6 screen shots and a statement about
4+ LAN users. Speculation is fun... but it doesn't mean a thing until
the game is actually released.
Crammond's got a pretty good track record... I'm optimistic.
I am hearing that the FIA / FOCA wouldn't allow Internet play - dunno if
that's true though.

Could it be that the license Microprose have purchased does not allow
Internet play, and to upgrade it would entail another extremely expensive
visit to Bernie's plush offices?

Hey, just what we need, another reason to hate Bernie, the poisoned
dwarf.

Sounds about right.
I still reckon this game will be great though.

Yup, that's one of the reason why MGPRS came without the license but a
set of editors instead. Clearly the smarter solution IMHO...

Not with online play he doesn't. I'm not so optimistic.
And if the damned game is nothing like it's going to be at release time, then
why prevue such aa blah an offering as it appears to be at this time? Just to
let us know they're working on it? Fine. Work on it. Let us know when it's
worth looking at.

I believe they wouldn't have said "4+" if it didn't mean anything. Game
companies generally advertise that will be available when the game is
released, not what is available in the alpha/beta code.

software that makes GP2 what it is today will be able to convert that
LANability into TCP/IPabilty.
They can, can't they. <FG> (frightened grimace)

FOCA wouldn't allow Internet play - dunno if
Alternatively you could use something like Kali and save them the effort.
M
He he...
I didn't even know how that worked. :-)
