GPL has finally done it....

Has GPL become boring without weather and strategy?

A poster said he was bored with GPL because every race had the same conditions and needed no setup changes, and looked forward to GP3's weather. Most replied they were still fascinated a year on and had barely explored some tracks, though some agreed that pit stops and changing weather would add strategy. One proposed a 'virtual mechanic' that adjusts setups from driver feedback.

I'm actually bored with it!!!!!! Yep.. not that it isn't a great sim.. but the fact that every single race is the same.. online, offline.. the same conditions.. same setup.. same .. SAME.. :-) I can't wait for GP3 where we will have dinamic weather.. where setup will actually be NEEDED!!!! and you will have to change the steup to suit the weather conditions.. Pit stops.. etc.. just somthing different.. because I've just got sick of Legneds :-) Oh well.. too much of a good thing........ James Pickard, Melbourne AUSTRALA GPL Australian Champion - Season 1
You don't need a setup for GPL???--you must be a phenomenal driver!!!! Marc.
Guess your heart was never really in it. To me it gets more interesting all the time. I'm very busy professionally at the moment and I begrudge not being able to get the track time I want to be getting. Then again, I'm still learning. GPL is the first "game" where, after more than a year, I can't see the learning curve flattening out. Jan. ---- <snip>
What he means is that once you've got a good setup, there's no need to change it. If there would be weather conditions, you would have to setup your car according to the circumstances of the weather. Andre On Thu, 09 Sep 1999 23:45:52 GMT, "Marc Collins"

My sentiments EXACTLY, Jan. It is coming up to the anniversary of when this game was released and I am as fascinated by it now as I was when the demo first appeared! No one's talking about wet weather Bruce, but changing weather. If you knew by a "forecast" the chance of rain durin a race you might have to decide or not to run a comprimse setup or not..... Z. Please remove NOSPAM from my email address when replying.
So GP3 is having changeable weather?

% What he means is that once you've got a good setup, there's no need to % change it. If there would be weather conditions, you would have to % setup your car according to the circumstances of the weather. I think there is alot left in the setup arena that many folks haven't even touched yet. Yeh, you can have a hot setup, but that doesn't mean there isn't some room for improvement. I am finding new things all the time, just requires some experimenting with some of the things people don't change that much (ramp angle, bump/rebound) and even things people think are cast in concrete (gearing, clutches). But, if you are bored, you're bored.... -- **************************** Michael E. I completly agree with you. Alison and hotshots like Woeger and Huttu showed us what you can do with the setups. And experimenting with setups definately doesn't bore me! But Patrick, who's bored with GPL (I CAN'T UNDERSTAND THAT!) stated that you only need one setup for a race. If you would have changeable weather conditions, setup strategy would become even more interesting. I also agree with that. Andre On Fri, 10 Sep 1999 16:06:21 GMT, "Michael E. Carver"

Agreed Bruce. The SLONG guys have just started racing at Spa! We are loving it. We have mainly concentrated on WG, Monza, Silverstone. So there is plenty more to be looked at. I cant remember a racing sim with the longetvity that GPL has.

That's what was thinking and, in fact, what I and a colleague have been discussing. he has had the sim for about 9 months and, apart from a quick "look" at all the tracks, he has not even practised at over half of them! Because he has had personal experience with Rouen and Monaco, they have been high on his list, but Spa has become his favourite, even though he hasn't completed a race there!

I can understand James's view here. The lack of pit stops and variable weather do make every race a sprint from start to finish. There is little or no strategy involved. When you consider that many of us would have now have now done more race laps than any real racer in history I can understand that one may like to have more texture in the race experience fabric. James's problem may be that he's just too darn fast for his own good. While he can do 1:27s at Monza with defaults most of us can't. Many of us can't even do so with the most tweaked setups Internet time can ferret out. ( Heck James was still killing us when in the slower cars for heaven's sake ). Pit stops would have been nice. I don't think anyone would disagree with this. Maybe they couldn't get them in the code in time, or whatever. Better information back from the cars would be nice. ( Yes they never had telemetry but they still had tricks to help tell what was going on. Eg. putting a dab of grease on the shock shafts so that when they came in you could see how much travel you were using. Other tricks too. GPL gives absolutely nothing here. ) Regards Phillip McNelley
You're cursed, James ;o). Seriously, I believe there are people who whatever they do sooner or later get bored by it, and that could be a curse. Personally I've tried a lot of things in my 35 year old life; tennis, soccer, karate, golf, swimming, skiing, sex... :o). Sooner or later I reach a point where I dont think it's as fun as it used to be and later down the road I get bored. I wonder if I have had a worse memory, so every time I did something it would be as fun as the first time I did it, would be a better solution... Perhaps you're now thinking I should start to do something new... Well, how long can you do that before starting something new gets boring??? /Chrille, with a rant on life :o)

Get a job! :-) Sorry, I'm just jealous of anyone that can get enough wheel time to get bored! Actually that's not true. I have a dual GPL/flight sim ***ion so I find the combination gives me more than enough variation. Every time I take a break from GPL I'm always freshly impressed when I come back. Andrew McP

Damn, bored from being too good... Where can I find his replays? :D Cheers /ft, really slow and thus having a lot of fun, or something like that

Hello, I have the game since april and only know two tracks now: Spa and Monza. I'm glad there isn't an expiry date on this product :>) Jan.

GPL truly is a fascinating sim... a classic IMO. I have competed at all the circuits, online, offline, and in online leagues, and I am at at least as anxious to get home and run a few laps tonite as I was the day I bought it! Maybe part of it is due to the fact that my work and family obligations restrict me from using GPL as much as I would like (sigh), but I usually get in an hour a day at it, and it simply floors me... I haven't delved deeply into the setups yet; I generally scavenge others' and tweak them for balance, so there is plenty of leg room for exploring the sim yet. GPL will be on my hard drive for at least the next couple of years... Sent via Deja.com http://www.deja.com/ Share what you know. Learn what you don't.
me too :-) I'd really like to have a kind of 'virtual mechanic' in a racing game. after doing some laps he analyses your laps, asks you some questions and you answer them or check something like "that *** is rolling into turn 2" or something and he then adjusts your setup. the reason that I did not yet develop own setups is the taht I wanna waste my time with racing only :-) Lio
lightware.de>: Excellent idea. And there's nothing un-sim like about it. Top level race drivers don't have to deal with figuring out the mechanics of what to change. They tell the mechanic/engineer what the cars doing or not doing and the mechanics make the changes. It would be very realistic to have some kind of multiple choice question/auto setup function. -- Don Scurlock Vancouver,B.C.
