At last a real rally simulator!

Ubisoft's upcoming rally simulation

Mauritz Lindqvist pointed to an interview about a Ubisoft rally sim promising that steering would not automatically correct slides. Posters questioned whether a striking screenshot was real, and ymenard insisted that any game on Ubisoft's POD-derived engine could not satisfy hardcore sim racers. Others told him his anti-Ubisoft campaign had grown repetitive.

Automated summary.

UBI Soft is working on a rally simulation game. It looks promising and there is a interview over here: [link lost in import: /+10+1999/7:57:43.shtml] I like this part in the interview: "I think that one of the things that may surprise gamers is the handling of the car : the steering commands will not automatically cause sliding, as it is the case in many games of this type." And can this really be an ingame screenshot? [link lost in import] -- /M Lindqvist Spamguard: Remove .ajabaja in e-mail
: And can this really be an ingame screenshot? : [link lost in import] The tailpipe is too small. It is therefore obvious to me, based on this screenshot, that it will be a ***rally simulation. Stephen ;)
That's an incredible picture. If it really is a screenshot, I wonder what level of hardware one would need to produce a decent framerate with that degree of detail. Much discussion on my end as to whether it's a genuine in-game shot or a (possibly touched-up?) static rendering of one frame. Any thoughts? Zog

Yes, promising as always. But didn't someone here say that he tried Ubi's rally simulation at ECTS and it basically stunk. Though if it's released sometime around next spring, a lot of things can still happen. This caught my eye tho... why do they keep insisting on that candy- colored sky, just beats me. It's already becoming something of a trademark in Ubi's motorsport sims. No game using the POD game engine can be promising from a hard-core simracer POV ;-) type." LOL. What they call a feature is actually a bad game engine. Everybody knows how the POD game engine feels, it feels nothing, I bet it can't properly model the natural sliding effect of real-life Rally racing, so they used that excuse :) yeah I know it's cheap Ubisoft-bashing, Im sorry :) -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... Let me get this straight. You're basing your opinion of a game on the size of the car's tailpipe?? You should at least try a demo (not beta or alpha) before you criticize a game IMO. Even though the game may suck, I still think that you should give it a chance. -- the friendly pysco I know it's spelled wrong but I'm not a psycho ;-) > : And can this really be an ingame screenshot? > : [link lost in import] > The tailpipe is too small. Why is it silly ? It's true. What do you know about what I know about Ubisoft's 2000 line of product ? Wow btw that last sentence was weak, my bad. Another time, the POD Game engine can't successfully model an accurate representation of rally racing to please the hard-core simracing market. From what I say, it's a fact. As you said and it's true, it was one of the best arcade racer of the time (with Screamers2 IMHO), but that doesn't mean it can model and simulate in an accurate way a Rally car or F1 car. Gp2 is IMHO superior in almost all aspects of modern Formula 1 compared to MGPRS2. Of course it doesn't have hardware 3d rendering, but that's it's only inferiority compared to Ubisoft's Game engine - GP2 wins easily. Track accuracy and details - Anybody can win against the poor limitation of the Ubisoft track modeling and game engine, who can only do up/down elevation, no banking or camber. Sounds - Gp2 wins easily AI - Gp2 wins, just look at the scripted AI in MGPRS2, especially when it comes to lapping cars and the Blue flag issues. Feeling - Gp2 wins hand-down. The feeling is almost impossible to find in MGPRS2. In Gp2 you clearly feel behind a wheel of a Formula 1, with it's pure power and rage. Graphics - Ok Ubi's title win, but Gp2 does an incredible job with it's non-3d rendering. Gameplay - Gp2 has an incredible depth gameplay, you can choose much more options than in MGPRS2. And the whole third-party utilities clearly make GP2 the superior modern F1 sim. You can download thousands of tracks, cars, carsets, utilities, ***pits, etc.. You can't download most of that for Ubisoft's title. Btw how come they never fixed sound in the replay in MGPRS2 when it works in F1RS ? What is it really that hard to do ? The only fact that we are comparing a 1995 simulation to a 1998 simulation really shows you the whole point ;-) -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... I live in Melbourne and believe me our clouds do not move anything like that, I'd get sick if I looked up at the sky :) Tony

The earth is round, that's a fact. Your feelings about a sim are that, just feelings, but.. Sigh! Still it's getting rehashed again and again - for more than 3 years and still counting. For some reason you never posted anything even remotely as paranoid as you do regularly when it comes to Ubisofts 2 titles...;) --Tel

That's your opinion, not a fact. GP2 does not even know how to flip a car and the excessive amount of grip and thus cornering speed is just ridiculous and far from reality. Actually the POD engine *can* do banking, unfortunately it's just not used for the tracks. But so does GP2. Ever tried to create a banking with the track editor? Watch what the cars do... Yep. But that can be changed just as easily. Blue Flag behaviour is poorly done, that's true. Other than that I don't see any flaws with it. Just sit back and watch a race in tv mode, it looks pretty life like (whether thats a good thing is another story). Again, just an opinion. GP2 may be easier to drive due to higher grip level - MGPRS on the other hand needs more practice and skill. Definately not true. There's neither a scenario mode nor ghosts nor career mode etc... AFAIK not even an effective penalty system. MGPRS2 easily excels GP2 when it comes to gameplay options. That's just natural when a game runs for years without any real competition. As to the replay sound in MGPRS I agree that's really a shame. Not that it bothers me that much though, I usually have replay disabled anyway due to gamespeed reasons. ;) -- Tel http://tel.tsx.org a.k.a. Holger Bachert ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ http://bachert.cjb.net

Well I know some people at Papyrus that would say the opposite about my posts, since I was pretty against Nascar 3 on the T.g.s.n. newsgroup until I got more information about that title from a great person down there. I know N3 is different, at least they made the effort. Don't ever compare the Ubi game engine to the old Papyrus game engine. I just said a fact that the current Ubisoft game engine can't create a successful Game engine. I feel it's true, the same as it couldn't for the old Papy game engine. But at least Papyrus creates good software out of that game engine. Nascar 3 is enhanced in about every aspect of the game. It's the second best racing sim on the market after GPL. Everything is better, sure it's not the GPL engine, but it's not N2.5. Sound, gameplay, physics, graphics, AI, multiplayer ;-) You will see ! ;) -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... "People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realise how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world."
I think Tel's point, Francois, is that anyone who's been around here more than four or five months knows in considerable detail about your opinions on Ubi-Soft. They may be well-grounded, but ... the horse is very, very dead. You really could stop *** it anytime. ;-) Kurt
