MSFF - GPL, some weird stuff

12 posts by 9 people · 30 Sep 1999 - 06 Oct 1999

Hello, I was trying to race a F3 race at brands hatch on VROC yesterday. During practice i crashed hard and the wheel wouldn't center to the right place anymore. "Say goodbye to that suspension", i though and pressed Shift-R. Still the wheel wouldn't center itself at the right place. I quit the game, and then the auto-centering kicked in, but still the wheel centered to about 10 o'clock. Conclusion: The wheel suddenly changed the center point. Really weird. I've experienced similar problems if i tried to connect the wheel when my system is on (not a smart thing to do), but this was during gameplay. Have anyone else experienced this ? By the way, i'm back from a 10 day holiday, and boy my driving sucks now, this game is seriously demanding on my timeresources :) -- Olav K. Malmin remove spam when replying

Its happened to me about 4 times now, it seems to happen after a heavy impact that is causing a high load on the CPU. It seems that the processor load is preventing the wheel being read and because it uses an optical pot it see's the centre in a different place. If you unplug the power from the wheel and then plug it back in the centre will be re-found, this can sometimes be done when still in a game but may cause the return to centre to switch back on. Its the wheel calibration that changes not GPL so don't try to recalibrate from within the game. -- Ian Parker UKGPL League http://www.btinternet.com/~ukgpl/index.html --

Thanks for the info, and yes, it was a heavy chrash :)

I had this happen quite often on a saitek (which uses microsoft FF technology) I used to find that turning the wheel very quick left/right several times sometimes set the centre back to normal. Bummer when you're in the middle of a good race though : ( -- Cheers, Robin Lord - Trance DJ & Sim Racer. http://www.oppositelock.freeserve.co.uk Nurburgring and Grand Prix Legends | Hello, | | I was trying to race a F3 race at brands hatch on VROC yesterday. | | During practice i crashed hard and the wheel wouldn't center to the right place | anymore. I find this happens with the Act Labs FF system as well. The wheels center will be off. Doesn't happen very often, but when it does I just hit F3 and re-calibrate my wheel. > > Its happened to me about 4 times now, it seems to happen after a heavy > > impact that is causing a high load on the CPU. I've had the same problem for some 3 times and _without_ crash. Actually I had that problem twice in a row(next lap) at Spa and both times it happened in the same corner(tight left after Eau Rouge and the following straight). Don't know if that was just a bad luck or was I pushing CPU so hard in that corner....Haven't happened in league race yet ;P Otherwise I'm very satisfied to MSFF and wouldn't change it to LWFF because then I should buy new pedals for it too...IMO MSFF is best one-package-wheel/pedals-combination for people who want FF.

<snip> In theory it's possible to use the LWFF with the MSFF pedals. I don't know if anyone has done this. ~ Bart Westra

I tend to agree. I had a LWFF that I broke while trying to cure a terribly irritating squeaking. Well, it's not so much broke as I haven't a clue how to get all the cables back on properly. At any rate, the squeaking was so bad that I wasn't going to use it like that anyways, I could hear it over the engine sound of my Ferrari and it was distracting - it was that loud. I tried to find another one without the squeak, as I liked the wheel and the FF effects, but everywhere I went was out of them, and acted like they wouldn't be getting any for a while. I found an MSFF that had an open box, but didn't look at all used, for $100 (vs. $150 regular price) at the Best Buy. Not wanting to be without a wheel with N3 right around the corner, I figured I'd give it a shot. Surprisingly, I like it better than the LWFF by a good bit. You do notice the gears a bit, but even the Logitech wasn't totally smooth as you still felt the motor "stepping". The buttons for shifting at first seemed much inferior to the LWFF, but work as well in actual use. The greater range of movement for the MS wheel is also nice, and it seems to have a better angle to me. The mounting system is nicer, as you don't have to lower the chair to avoid hitting the knees on the center clamp like you do with the clamps (or rather their knobs) on the LWFF (and about every other wheel mounting system I've seen). And, the pedals. MUCH better on the MS. The LWFF ones are adequate, and you get used to them - but when you go to something with more travel and a better angle, they do seem quite inferior. The proof, as they say, is in the pudding - and what surprised me was after tweaking the force adjustments in GPL I was running faster times with the MSFF in a few hours vs. the ones I'd run with the LWFF after months of use, and always felt a bit more in control. I went in thinking I'd still want to get another Logitech when they came in, but found myself liking the MSFF a lot - and not wanting to go back. -- Ken's Sig 3.0 "Who is the more foolish? That was with GPL 1.2. With 1.1.0.3 I've never had this problem, and I've done some wild saving manouvers for sure. I hope we will not continue to have this problem after the official 1.2 release.

I haven't tried this, but I have tried to use the MSFF wheel/pedal unit in combination with CH Pedals. Unfortunately, once the MSFF wheel was installed (via the sound card game/MIDI port) and working, Windows Game Controllers wouldn't recognize any other controllers, even though they were attached to a different controller card (a PDPI L4 on one machine, a TM ACM on another). I'd be interested to know if anyone has gotten the MSFF wheel/pedal unit to operate simultaneously with any other controller devices. Alison, What's wrong with the MSFF pedals. I love mine. Joel Willstein
