Are there any modern era Formula 1 or Indycar racing games released for the
PC that have been released lately?

There was but I don't think that it was released to the public. I was able
to score a few pre release laps at a trade show some years ago.

If the first one, I really suggest Official Formula 1 Racing (OF1R) by
Eidos. It's a good arcade game, actually quite a lot of fun, but nothing
serious.
As for a serious sim, we're all awaiting Grand Prix 3, I would suggest you
download the demo of Ubisoft's MGPRS2 at http://www.monacoracing.com/ . If
not, take a peek at Grand Prix 2, but it's quite old.

There was never a demo of GP2 was there?

(Computer Shopper in UK Feb 97) it's a single track fixed setup demo of a
quick race at Monza, it actually started my simracing career :)

There still is a demo available, but it's a non-playable one.
