Take off the AIDS! I have now being playing GPL for the last 3 weeks and I
could never get close to the top six people. I had read some articles about
having to listen to your brakes and prevent them from locking up and also
having to gradual squeeze the throttle. At the time I had throttle assist
and braking assist on so I never had to worry about it. I decided to try
without and what a difference. It took me about four laps to get used to it
but I have taken about 5 seconds off my time. I tried a WatGlen race on the
net to see how I would do. I haven't played WatGlen very much but i managed
to place in the top two of 12. WOW.
This game is a drug...
Driving tips for faster GPL laps and going online
A newcomer said turning off the driving aids was the secret to faster GPL laps. Others said practice was what really mattered, and encouraged a driver with a 1:06 at Watkins Glen to go online, stressing consistency over speed. The thread moved on to turn-in points, braking markers, field of view and the sense of speed.
Automated summary.
I turned the aids off when I started with GPL (about a year ago) and I
still can't drive in the 1:27's at Monza! Damn!

still more practice. The real trick is to keep yourself interested in putting in
the seat time. Once any particular track becomes as familiar to you as the
path to your refrigerator, your concious and (more importantly) subconcious
are not being used up remembering which way the track went and can devote
processor time to shaving time. For me, a breakthrough occured when I was
forced to learn Monaco for a World Champ season because I was so bored
with single races at the (easy) tracks that I liked. After a solid week of spinning
crashing, spinning-crashing at every possible place, I learned to modulate
and be delicate in pedal and steering inputs, learned that sometimes fast is slow
and slow is fast, and mainly learned restraint. This Monaco lesson seems to
have carried over to any other track I go back to. It might be worth trying.
Good luck and good racing!

With that time you'll do fine online. The big things for online racing are
consistency and situational awareness (so you can dodge the wrecks).
Remember that , due to lag, what you see on your monitor is not exactly the
same as your opponent sees. Allow for that factor by leaving a little more
room than you would leave when racing offline against the AI cars. Remember
that people are generally not as consistant in their driving as the AI.
Don't try to win the race in the first corner. It helps if you have an easy
to drive setup so that you're not wrestling with the car when you need to be
thinking ahead and planning your passes. Join up with VROC, set up GSB and
have fun!

More important is consistent driving, avoiding other drivers, and
letting drivers who are clearly faster than you pass in a safe way.

That depends on what you are looking for while racing on-line, if you're
out to beat Ian Lake :-), I suggest you keep on practicing, but if you
want to go online to fiurther improve your driving and be part of the
very nice on-line community, just go for it, personally I don't care if
I win or loose as long as I had a good time, and you won't know until
you have tried, I don't think 1:06's will gie you too many victories,
but it shows that you "know enough" about GPL to enjoy going online,

Hmmm... "Bracket" racing anybody?
I find that racing (be it real or simulated) is an awful lot more fun when
you have lots of people running broadly similiar lap times...
This might already have been done (I haven't looked at on-line racing yet
because I assumed that 1'32 round Monza and 1'06 round WG would just get me
laughed at!), but, let's say somebody was to set up a server with races set
up in a sort of "ladder". grouped by fastest/slowest laptime...
Break the fastest laptime and you get DQ'd (and "promoted" to the next
bracket up the ladder).
Break the slowest laptime (you'd need to allow a bit of latitude for "out"
laps and being slowed down by traffic, but I'm sure something could be
agreed) and you're "demoted" to the next slowest group.
This should allow everybody to find a race where they won't either get
totally demoralised or disapear into the distance...
What do people think?

Except that I seem to out-brake myself into the gravel trap at Parabolica on
a fairly regular basis too.
When you're approaching a 2nd gear bend at 190MPH the margin between braking
far too early and far too late seems very narrow!

threshold breaking is only the best method if you hit the
breaking point exactly. there are lots of corners where I don't
use threshold breaking and the parabolica is one of them ;-)

One thing I noticed the last few times I drove was that if I reduced
my 'driver induced oscillations' that this helped. Got a 3:24 at Spa
finally, broke my record with some 5 seconds.
In practice this means tighter steering; steer in at the right time.
Otherwise you'll have to correct your early or late steering, and the
car starts swaying a bit.

Oh, they'll tell you quite good! If you're constantly going wide on the apex
(means you're not *just* missing the inside curbs) you turn in too late. If
you always ride over the inside curbs (or have to take action to avoid this)
you turn in too early. The common problem seems to be to turn in too late. I
always try to turn in a tick earlier than I want to do (and I ride the
inside curbs quite often :-)). But I also have problems getting the right
turn-in point on some corners, like the left-handers in Silverstone and our
all-time-favourite, the Masta-Kink... :-(

I believe it's a perception thing. The corner rushes up on you at the last
second. I have a few years of real racetrack time and I never had this problem.
I believe it's inherent in the two dimemsional world, there's no depth
perception. What would help some is brake markers. It is common on race day to
put up two or three brake markers before turns to give drivers a reference
point for their braking. They use them in the real world, I wonder if they
were used in 67 gp racing. If so, lets have a patch. If not, lets have a patch
anyway.

almost every corner on every track except for a few corners have a dark
groove you can use for a breaking point. brake jsut after, just at, or some
rare corners, just before.
sracer
Well, I normally judge my braking points by the racing groove (or some
nearby sign or spectators). But I have some problems with the corners where
you don't need to brake. When I have to brake hard for a corner, I have my
braking point and a certain rhythm to downshift and turn in. If I've missed
the braking point *slightly* I can normally catch the car at turn-in
somehow. But when I don't need to brake for the corner, I find it very
difficult to find the right turn in point, 'cause all happens very fast and
a slight error causes you to miss the corner completely. This combined with
the fact, that the amount of easing off the throttle in such corners
influences your turning radius and cornering speed quite much, makes these
fast turns quite *** for me.
Well, but it can be done! (practice, practice). I've seen a Wolfgang Woeger
WR replay at Spa (3:13.something), where he takes the Masta Kink at nearly
300 kph (just going down to 298 shortly), incredible! When I take it at over
270, this means certain death to my 'virtual alter ego' at the fence!

It is a serious problem with GPL... the rather hungry graphics which
actually don't have enough detail to help you much. I find most of
my braking points are "kind of a little after the tree but before the
sign" which is problematic since "after the little tree" is a bit of a
movable feast. The long straight at Rouen is terrible for this. I
can't find anything to judge my braking by except "a fair distance
after the racing groove is black".

And it's a lot easier in the real three dimensional world, even
then brake markers are often put up during race events. In gpl I find it
useful to use a replay of a good hotlap, and from outside the car, frame by
frame yourself to the point where you or whoever first applies the brakes, them
go to the incar view while your stationary and carefully look for some visual
clue. It's easier to find a point that way than while driving for a difficult
corner.

Martin Brundle has said that he looks at things like small bushes,
tufts of grass, signs etc... He's also said that he's had at least one

So if you brake early, then you lose too much distance to pass on the straight.
You need to now be MUCH faster than your opponent.

mph is about kph times 5 divided by 8. So 240 kph would be 150 mph, 270 kph
are nearly 170 mph and 300 kph are 187.5 mph (that's fast, eh?) Now, how
much are you doing in Masta?

Remember what I said before about not being able to see the track clearly
enough? Maybe that's too big of a problem to overcome. Especially at Spa, the
track and surrounding dirt blends together... Silverstone's the same way. I
haven't figures out why yet.
