Flame warCorner-cutting at Riverside in NASCAR Legends

A question about lap times at Riverside in NASCAR Legends became a long argument over cutting through the dirt as the AI does. The poster ymenard argued that it was legitimate because the AI and real drivers did it, while John Simmons and Scott Hoffner called it unsporting, and Simmons muzzled him on his servers. Marc J. Nelson posted photos of real cars cutting turn six, and former spectators said no one did it every lap.

> Has anyone broke the 1:26min barrier? > (Yeah I know, I'm really slow........) > -Kofi.... I don't think 1:26 is slow, it's pretty decent in fact, if you did it correctly. I can get as low as 1:27:xxx in an untweeked ACE setup(I don't know how to tweek it :) ), and 1:28:xxx in the Fixed one. But can't get lower than that as of yet, and still drive the course correctly. I see WAY too many people cutting corners severely at the end of the esses and turning in some fast times. Making a mistake every couple of laps or so and throwing up some dust is one thing, but lap after lap I see people taking the "straight line" approach from the last couple of esses through the hard right hander. Poor driving and sportsmanship, and borders on cheating. It's hard to be impressed with a time done under those circumstances. Please don't take this as an accusation towards you NanaKofi. I have never seen you drive. I was referring to the sim racing pop. as a whole.
NanaKofi 26 Nov 1999#505573
No I don't take it as an accusation at all. 1] I drive the course correctly 2] I'm driving the Mercury Cyclone 3] My best time is only in the 1:28's..... Thanks for your input though........
"NanaKofi" wrote 1:26 isn't much of a "barrier". <VBG> 1:25 either, but I can't seem to get below 1:24 - even following the AI's "cheat" line through the dirt.
"NanaKofi" wrote Practice Riverside in N3 until you can do low 1:20s, then go back to Legends and it will seem much easier with the slower cars.

<yawn> There's no rules saying you have to stay on the track. If it's faster in REAL LIFE and in sim life cutting through the track well that's what I do. The AI does it, the real life driver did it that way, so I will do it. My best lap is 113.943 (1:22:778). If I use all the track I did a low 113. Just learn to control those cars and whatever you use the track or not you will be fast. You need to have perfect control of the old Papyrus game engine, and be one with the car. And use the Force ;) So no it's not poor driving or unsportsmanship. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... I'm with you when it comes to racing Frank. If anyone thinks they are going to win a race at Riverside without getting sand on their tires, they have quite a bit to learn. But when it comes to comparing "hotlaps", the general rule is 2 tires on the track surface at all times. Your 1:23 would be a darn good lap under those restrictions. "ymenard" wrote
Tire-barriers lined many of the curves on the track (which Papy seems to have left out - including a few other important details) which kept the cars glued to the centerline. However, I have several pics (nice and clear) of Petty and others cutting Turn 6 on two wheels...Lap, after lap, after lap...Below is one (thanks Don): http://www.simracing.com/eta/images/rir_nascar06.jpg Cheers! You can exchange any tracks between N3, NL and the old game engines. You just need to have the tracks and softwares and know how (read my converter FAQ at nascar-3.com). If not, there is a track converter for Riverside->N3 found at http://www.theuspits.com/ -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... LOL--your kidding right Frank? That is a pretty poor defense. It's one of those "unspoken rules". It's not in any rule book, but any RESPECTABLE driver will adhere to it. I would love to see where ANY real race driver cut the corners at Riverside the way you, and many other do, lap after lap, and deliberately. The AI is one thing, and shouldn't even be considered. I mean there are MANY probs with the AI, this is one of them. Taking "shortcuts" is cheating. Plain and simple. Do you really think that real drivers cut the corners like that? Your kidding right. If they did, you can sure as hell bet the BF would be flying real quick. Come tell me when you can run under 1:26:xxx and do it PROPER. That's when I'll be impressed with your skills. A replay would be nice too. :) It's extremely unsportmanlike to cut corners. End of story. Either learn to drive the track the way it was laid out, or why bother. Cutting the exit to the esses is plain and simple, WRONG. Then using the excuse "everybody does it, so why not me?" is SAD.
Brian 27 Nov 1999#505763
My problem with Riverside is that when I'm extering the esses three a*** (with AI cars on both sides of me cutting over the dirt), I can only make it all the way through the hard right once out of every 5 times (without an AI car bumping me off in the esses or entering the sharp right). Does anyone make it through the esses cleanly when there are AI cars nearby? I've never seen a race at Riverside, but I would not have thought that there was a lot of 3-*** racing through these esses. Brian
ymenard 27 Nov 1999#505764
ever watched a Rally race? What's the difference. Because you go in circles on a road course you shouldn't try to be faster when you have the opportunity Isn't that the whole part of racing? How do you know how much I cut the esses? Like I said... the AI does it, the human drivers online do it, and in real life they did cut the course. If you want to be "politically correct" ( eh ;-) ), it's your choice, but the concensus is that people have, are and will continue to cut the course. They won't slowdown. It's the same like cutting through the grass in the Esses at Watkins Glen. Or cutting a little into the grass at the Nurburgring in GPL at some tight esses Or on the NROS cutting through the grass on the left after the carousell to gain an extra 0.05mph. It's the natural selection somehow. The ones with the biggest imagination, who can push the car enough to be faster will be the winners. Uh... just push the darn car, I can do an easy high 1:23 using ACE. Especially turn 1 and turn 2, the most important corners since they carry all the speed into the esses. Turn 1 is a very tricky corner. Just lift a little and turn earlier than you think into the apex. And don't fear just going through the little dip of sand between the pitroad and the main road. After for Turn2, the best would be to just put 2wheels on the sand to gain front momentum and carry the speed into the esses. For the last turn, brake half a second after the tyre mark and trailbrake. It will take off almost half a second out of a lap. Finally, the corner before the long backstretch is also tricky. The radius tightens up and you need to brake more than you think (the opposite of T1). Brake earlier and set your car so it doesn't touch the second apex exiting the corner (the first apex is inside of the track, the second outside). I hope I helped you... -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... That pic shows NOTHING like what happens online in NL. In fact, that pic shows petty's car merely stirring up some dust where the dirt meets the asphalt. Many folks in NL start at the first right turn into the esses and just drive a straight line right up until turn 6. They end up turning laps in the 113's and 114's because of it. I think papy should have at least put some tire curbs along the sides of the asphalt to keep everyone honest. Accuracy of track implementation is an honorable goal, but it's hurting online competition. -- ========================================================= Redneck Techno-Biker (Zerex12) http://www.members.home.net/jms1/index.html Barbarian Diecast Collector (370+ cars and counting) http://members.home.net/jsimm/diecast_index.html North American Stockcar Racing Online Competition http://www.paddedwall.org/nasroc1/nasroc1.html Super X Philes http://members.home.net/kap/superx/superx.html If you want to send me email, go to the first URL shown above & click "Send Me Mail" in the contents frame. =========================================================

In a rally, they don't have any asphalt to drive on. Further, it's a completely different form of racing, so your comparison is quite frankly full of shit. I have a replay of you doing it lap after lap... correct" ( eh ;-) ), it's your choice, but the concensus is that "The AI do it so it must be okay..." - What a crock of shit. Further, the real life races exhibited none of the driving I've seen online. It's NOT the same. All of those examples you've cited involve getting just TWO of the cars tires off the racing surface. The way you cut the course at riverside, you'd think you were driving a race in Monster Truck Madness.... Or the ones that try to justify shitty driving... You've only demonstrated your complete ignorance of stockcar races held at Riverside, the general absence of driving ability because you'd rather offroad then try to negotiate a complex series of turns, and you complete lack of anything close to being called honor and integrity. He can't do it without cutting the esses... I can do a 109.9 without cutting the esses, and a 113.9 if I do. -- ========================================================= Redneck Techno-Biker (Zerex12) http://www.members.home.net/jms1/index.html Barbarian Diecast Collector (370+ cars and counting) http://members.home.net/jsimm/diecast_index.html North American Stockcar Racing Online Competition http://www.paddedwall.org/nasroc1/nasroc1.html Super X Philes http://members.home.net/kap/superx/superx.html If you want to send me email, go to the first URL shown above & click "Send Me Mail" in the contents frame. =========================================================

They do race on tarmac or gravel or any "defined" road. And they cut it. It's normal racing mentality. If you can go faster that way, then I say go for it. If it's dangerous to other drivers or to the driver itself, it will be banned or penalized, that's what racing series are for. And my opinion is not full of shit John. Oh you saved it ? Well I won the 25lap race by like half a lap also 8) The AI does it and the majority of online racing people do it also. And I've seen footage. They do cut the course. They do it. They put 2tyres in the Heck it's not my fault if the track is like that. It's just too much inviting. You have this stupid S that you can go from one to another. Btw simply check out how much time I spend in that last esse (it's the only time where I can say I go in the sand to gain time). Im there what for half a second ? I re-enter the braking zone (like most of the real-life drivers did) after, slightly turning to the left for the corner. Why 2 and not 4 ? Why did you snipped my GPL quote ? It is accepted there. And Papyrus did not implemented gates you must pass throught. If they had, all of this wouldn't happen. Not that Im blaming them. What's the limit for you ? How far is 2wheels for you? and is your opinion the rule? Why are we fighting for that. It won't change anything, people will still cut the course, like the AI does and real-life drivers have done. Only for that second that your actually on the sand. Of course, because Im Canadian I probably have no knowledge at all of Stock-car racing. And your talking to somebody who puts very big ideologies for years on the newsgroup promoting the community and sportsmanship. But for me cutting that second into the sand is nothing to care about. <yawn> My daddy is better than yours. Those testosterone fighting are very boring for me, sorry. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... Sound like something that ought to be fixed in a patch to me. Don Burnette
Perhaps the pic isn't as clear as I originally thought - Nevertheless, Petty's tires are over the edge of the track. The turn was a favorite spot amongst the photography group for the two-wheeled action that took place. FWIW, I've been to the track many times and have seen it happen (not Nascar, mind you)...I've been told the Nascar drivers did it on a regular basis though. Besides, you said it never happened in real life, and I showed that it did. I never said anything about online play. ;) Cheers! Marc

Why not use the tire-objects from GPL's Rouen? - Perfect match IMHO.

Getting a bit testy, no? ;) > so your comparison is quite frankly full of shit.
The problem is Papy doesn't consider it a bug. Read this: Douglas Sharpe wrote That's not a bug! Watch some old NASCAR tapes from Riverside and you will see that they spent more time in the dirt than they did on the asphalt, especially in the esses and turn 6, and if you want to be fast at Riverside you better master cutting the corner at 6 because there is a lot of time to be made there. Scott Sanford Papyrus but not Still it is not a bug since it is something we did on purpose. We had 4 different tapes of races at Riverside and all of them show cars going off the track lap after lap at certain points on the track so we decided to model the AI that way. Well usually its considered that you need to have 2 wheels on track to be on course. I would say since I have watched a lot of Riverside races both Nascar and otherwise that they did drive thru the esses on the pavement. The Nascar guys did kick up a lot of dust due to the cars are so heavy and do not turn well, but they kept 2 tires on the racing surface at all times. Its a neat track to run, but it sounds like a few are spoiling it for online racing since they will not even try to keep the car on the racing surface. Also I think it funny that someone is trying to defend themselves, but saying everyone else is doing it, it sounds like my 4 year old trying to explain why he decided to write all over the walls in his room. dave
> ever watched a Rally race? What's the difference. Because you go in circles > on a road course you shouldn't try to be faster when you have the > opportunity Isn't that the whole part of racing? Oh so now your comparing NASCAR road course racing with Rally racing? They are 2 different entities, from 2 different racing worlds. Besides, -most- of the time they don't even race on roads. And they don't do laps, giving them the opportunity to cut the same corner over and over. Poor defense. Yes, going faster is the point of racing, but sportsmanship is the point competition. Plain and simple, if you get 4 wheels off the course on purpose lap after lap, you are cheating. You are cheating yourself, because you haven't learned the correct way to drive the course, and you are cheating your fellow racers because now they either have to cut too, or be left behind when racing you. For someone who was, and still is so worried about cheating, you sure did jump at your first opportunity to do so, and are now forcing others to do so, in order to "keep up with the Jones'" When running at the Glen, do you see cars cut through the chicane? No. Why not? It's faster isn't it? You have attested before to repeatedly doing so in prior posts regarding lap times. Natural Selection? LOL Oh, and cutting corners is hardly "pushing a car". More like "pushing the rules". Like I said, send a replay over of you doing those times without cutting the turns. Till then, to me, they have no merit. I am trying to keep the car on the surface at all times. To me that is one of the MAIN rules of racing. Any dust kicked up by me, is a mistake on my part, unfortunately that still is a lot of dust though :) "Everybody else does is so why not me?"----- Dare to be different Frank.
Thanks for the reply Marc, but a still shot of Petty with 1 maybe 2 tires off the asphalt is not what I would call proof. It shows he clipped the dirt on that lap. Nothing more. Find me a few laps on video, film, whatever--5 or more, with the drivers doing it, then I'll be convinced. A still shot, or someone saying "It's true" other than a former course competitor, holds no water. I've watched the old IROC races held there on ESPN Classic a few times, and never saw corner cutting. On purpose anyway. Saw a few times people got a little squirrly here an there, and got on the dirt a little, but didn't see any "straight line" mentalities like we have with Frank, and TOO MANY other online drivers.
Perhaps the online "cutting" doesn't compare (or come close) with what really went on, but my saying the real drivers cut the corners holds water with me - I saw enough of it with my own eyes in other races to believe it possible for the Nascar drivers to do same. Marc

I see you have ommited on purpose GPL. Why did you cut that quote eh ? Poor defense on your side. Almost everybody does it yet you don't see people like you screeming out of their windows like if they have been stolen or something. You make a big deal out of nothing. I went back to NL and calculated how much time I am actually on the sand. A big whooping 1.5 second. Yepo everybody, a simple 3/2rd of a second. Wow and you think that this over a lap ruins the whole experience ? Well my fellow there's a minute and 20seconds after that to miss or gain time. And btw this thread has already existed you should check out dejanews about that FYI Well it's up to you to decide how big is the grey zone. Sorry but I won't change at all how I race. Especially since I don't care about NL much. It's a quality title but another stupid SIERRA decision to competition themselves with N3 and NL. But hey Im not surprised at that anymore coming from Sierra. So you won't see me on NL. I'll have fun racing the AI like they do in real life, and how humans do it in real-life online also. And btw you probably have never seen people on the NROS put their whole 4tyres in the grass at Watkins Glen or Sears Point. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... Almost everybody does it yet you don't see people > like you screeming out of their windows like if they have been stolen or > something. You make a big deal out of nothing. ??? I don't understand? Omitted GPL? GPL was never part of this discussion. And what quote are you referring to? Poor Defense? you lost me Frank. And by the way, I'm a far cry from "screaming out my window" in regards to this. This is the only thread I've had a discussion regarding the corner cutting, so I would hardly call it "screaming" about it. As far as making a big deal out of nothing, I make a big deal out of something that is a big deal to me. Unsportsmanlike conduct. Deliberately running off course to have faster times, is unsportsmanlike conduct to me, and really falls under a header of cheating. Like I said in my last post to you Frank, if your logic was applied the way you want it to be, then why don't people cut the chicane at the Glen? Or cut early through turn 11 at Sears Point? It's faster isn't it? It would improve your lap times wouldn't it? You can't that's why. Because you have to stay on course. The sand is not part of the race course at Riverside. And the track does not go straight there. next.. Listen Frank, first off, it's not how much time you spend on the sand, it's how much advantage you gain from it. Your on the sand for what you claim is 1.5 secs.(i'm not sure what 3/2rd is, but I'm hoping it's a French fraction :) but if it's a typo and you meant 2/3rd's then I want to know how 1.5=2/3rd, French math perhaps? <G> j/k) But any way, if you spend 1.5 secs on the sand, and I have to slow down MUCH more to make the turns correctly, then you gained A LOT more than 1.5 secs. Probably closer to the point of 3 secs. Now compound that lap after lap, and guess what. You are building up an extremely unfair advantage. <sarcasm> Oh, sry, I didn't know I was supposed to keep up with EVERYTHING that ever was posted here so as not to repeat anything. </sarcasm> Just because a thread already existed means what? That we're not allowed to discuss it any longer? Again, you've been using this defense the whole time, yet can't come up with ANY proof that real people did it in real life. And don't try to point out Marc's R.Petty photo as proof, you can read my reply to that if you want to know why. I think your just hoping they did, so you can justify it. I mean who told you they did? When did you see them do it? How many races have you ACTUALLY seen at Riverside? I do not for an instant believe that any real life competitors used the "straight line" approach the way it is used in the game, without at least incurring some penalties. Not sure if you get the channel Speedvision or not Frank, but every so often they run replays of early IROC races at Riverside. I've watched them on many occasions, and have never seen anyone cutting the esses, on purpose anyway. These are the only races I've seen at Riverside, and what I am basing my defense on. But at least I know there is actual footage to back me up. You on the other hand.....? So I guess I must lead a sheltered life or something, since I never saw people deliberately cut corners at those 2 places. But then again, I don't/didn't race with EVERYONE, so it's of course possible, and in fact probable. How would I know from the back of the pack anyway :) But again, just because they do/did it, doesn't make it right. That's the issue. Not whether "everyone is doing it", but rather that it's wrong to do it at all. Like I said before Frank---dare to be different. But I bet when N4 comes, or whatever they want to call it, and the walls are taken out of the Glen, and Sears, you'll be the first person cutting through turn 11 at Sears claiming it's ok because you only do it for 1.5 seconds. and besides you think you saw real drivers do it too.

Obviously it can, as all the NROS hotlappers on road course knew that in the chicane at the Glen you had to keep 100+speed by putting all 4tyres on the grass, and also at Sears Point you could cut the turn after the caroussell going full car into the grass. And my GPL quote was ommited. Almost everybody does it at the Nurburgring. Especially in the first sections (just at the limits of the gates) and in some fast esses around the circuit. Yet you don't see those people scream out about the problem, because there is not one. The thing is, you make people think that the 1.5second I pass on the sand makes me do incredible laptimes on the track. Which is false, there is more than a dozen corners after to gain speed on. Its the only place where I touch the sand. I don't do it in T1 and T2 because you loose speed there. Thinking that because your in the sand you will be faster is false. Your going slower there, it's very slippery and you need total control of the car. The momentum you have gained on the stretch makes for a very unstable car. Actually it was a translation. 3/2rd of a second is 1.5second for me. How should it be written in English ? ;) I was just saying this as an addition, to get more information you know... So give me a proof that the real people did not do it in real life also. Just quoting what you see on TV is not a proof to me. I could say the same thing also, that I've actually seen cars putting the full car on the sand. As in the top5 in road tracks on the NROS, be sure that to do 126+mph laptimes at the Glen you had to do it ;-) No, because Nascar Racing 4 will have a gate system like GPL. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... I've had no chocie but to muzzle ymenard from any further racing on my servers. He refuses to see the point and insists that his way is the correct way, when 9 out of 10 people participating in this thread are trying to convince him that four-wheels off the track lap after lap on ANY road course is NOT sporting. Ymenard, your arguments are groundless and lack any sign that you have any integrity or honor whatsoever. >Actually it was a translation. 3/2rd of a second is 1.5second for me. How >should it be written in English ? ;) 3/2 would have sufficed, though 1.5 is probably more correct. The amu***t comes from you appending 'rd' after the 2. If you were listing the places in a race, you would write them this way: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th etc. You were not referring to ordinal numbers, however, and the 2 in your fraction actually represents the words "halves." Were that number to have been a 3, you would have been referring to "thirds." Either way, there is no need to suffix the fraction with any letters. 3/2 = 1.5, so both are technically correct and the variation on the name of the number is assumed in the case of a mathematical expression. Now some math or English grad student can tell me why I am wrong. ~daxe -----------== Posted via Newsfeeds.Com, Uncensored Usenet News ==---------- http://www.newsfeeds.com The Largest Usenet Servers in the World! ------== Over 73,000 Newsgroups - Including Dedicated Binaries Servers ==-----

LOL. So you cannot accept to simply discuss about a situation so you muzzle (?). Sure hmm "ok". Yourself said that my points are non-sense, yet I have never actually flamed you for nothing in this discussion. Like I said.. why do you think Rally Racing or GPL cannot compare? "why" exactly? What are your reasons ? THe only thing you say it's that it's non-sense, yet you do not bring any point or additional reason. Why "that", tell us what you feel !!! But like I said, you won't see me on N3 or NL anymore, so why waste your time. Why am I wasting my time here ? "John Simmons" wrote Obviously, you have the right to muzzle anyone you choose to muzzle, but it's not as though ymenard invented this "not sporting" idea. When Scott Sanford from Papyrus came on here and said: "if you want to be fast at Riverside you better master cutting the corner at 6 because there is a lot of time to be made there." no one accused him of a lack of integrity. Papyrus designed the track to be driven this way, they believe that the real drivers drove Riverside that way. "it is not a bug since it is something we did on purpose. We had 4 different tapes of races at Riverside and all of them show cars going off the track lap after lap at certain points on the track so we decided to model the AI that way." Ymenard is driving the track the way Papyrus designed it to be driven, if you believe it was designed wrong then your argument should be with Papyrus. In my opinion 4 tires off the track should be a black flag, that is the way it works in DTR.

But how would they implement it. You cannot allow the AI to continually cut the corner and then make it almost impossible for players not to do the same. Everyone would be up in arms if they had done that. You see something the AI can do and you're not allowed. You'd be fuming. This disagreement has come about because of the way Papy decided the way Riverside would be run. If they had implemented things in the way some of the guys here believe it should have been done then there wouldn't be a problem. Arguing over the merits or otherwise of how to take this section is not going to make a blind bit of difference to most people unfortunately. The only way to resolve this issue lies solely in the hands of Papy in my view. We are driving this course under their rules - it's not real life - and if their rules say it's allowed then we have to abide by them. -- Peter Ives (AKA Ivington)

I think I'll drop my two cents in....I have spent most of the last 25 years within 10 miles or so of RIR and attended many races there (until it got turned in an empty mall). I wasn't a big NASCAR fan so most of the time we went to the sports car events, that is probably why the "NASCAR Line" thru the esses was so noticeable to me. Watching from the turn 6 stands it was obvious that a number of the NASCAR guys made little or no attempt to stay on the pavement (especially #43, of course the King makes his own lines <g>). I don't remember any with 4 wheels in the dirt at turn 6, not on purpose anyway. I guess that doesn't really help does it? mike miller

Well that is correct he said it and also I think he is wrong. I have watched quite a few Nascar races at the old Riverside luckily since ABC used to have it on the schedule. Well yes in a large group somone*** forced off the track almost everylap in the esses. Cutting turn 6 I do not remember unless it was followed by a large bang on hte outside wall of turn six. these cars are big heavy and handle like ***so yes they kickec up a lot of dust thru the esses, but the drivers were infact trying like hell to drive thru the esses. the fact Papy decided to model it the way they did just flat screws up online racing that is all. Well I have not online raced in a while due to time and will probly not mess about with it even tho that is the way all games are going. Its a shame the Papy had to do that but they did, and they seem to validate idiots reasoning to drive the course that way. Well Nascar rules of that day were also if you were not special you would get black flagged also so the person who invited Ymernard no to race in his league was right also. Dave

> Actually the analogy works better in reverse. What John is doing is > similar to yelling at his friends for hacking into a website which was > set up for the purpose of being hacked into. Yeah, that's a good one Tracey. Paraphrase---"Since it's easy to do, it makes it ok." Preferred line? Of course it's the preferred line--in fact it's a straight line. Just because it's "preferred", doesn't make it correct. I would "prefer" to go straight as well, but it's wrong. So guess what? I have scruples, and race the track the way it was intended to be. Not the way that's the easiest. Personally I can't see how Papyrus is right. Even with their lame press release referring to that fact that "everyone did it, so should you". It's plain and simple wrong---the AI totally ignores the way the course goes, and picks this "preferred line" you keep talking about. Like I said earlier, when the new generation of NASCAR comes from Papy, and the walls are removed from courses like Sears, and The Glen, are the AI and other drivers going to cut the chicane because it's "easier", or a "preferred line"? What about turn 11 at Sears, Might as well cut it early, I mean it's easier and quicker that way right? It's just a shame that Papy obviously needs to keep these walls in, and add a few maybe to stop this***poor excuse for sportsmanship.
> Yeah, that's a good one Tracey. Paraphrase---"Since it's easy to do, it > makes it ok." No, I'm refering to sites which are set up for the sole purpose of testing security. Microsoft set up a web server recently and dared people to try and break into it. Someone did it in one day, was that "immoral"? It's just a shame NASCAR has human officials to prevent poor sportsmanship. Unless John wants to sit and officiate all of the races on his server, I'd suggest he take his argument up with Papyrus and ask for a black flag option for when ever someone gets 4 tires off the course. It could be set up on the host with all the other options. Instead of arguing how it should be or how it was in 1970, lets ask Papyrus to give us the choice. Ask anybody in IGPS (two seasons of league racing using GPL) if I will sit and officiate a race. I have been known to watch my GPL league race replays *in their entirety* as many as 2 dozen times to make sure I didn't miss something. I *do* officiate, and only a couple of people have ever ***ed about me doing so (and that was because they got caught doing something stupid). No, because future Papyrus titles will have a gate system like in Grand Prix Legends. And btw Scott, it is not that easy to just "cut the course". You make it think like it's an easy thing that will make everybody lap Riverside over 113. I don't cut too much. I will loose too much time. I would rather turn a little left in the Esses before to have a clean line for the turn exit and run in the sand after. If they fix it, I'll be happy to race the way they want us to race after. But as a fast driver I will try to find everything possible to do it. Per example in GPL, many drivers go in the grass at the Hatzenbath(sp?), but they do it at the limit that the gates make it possible. They also do after the Plflanzgarten where you will find a couple of fast downhill esses. But to say something to John also.. If the server that Im inside racing ask me politely to stop using the line, I will do it. Im a gentlemen, yes I want to be as fast as possible but as the host he has the right to tell me what do to. David, I'm not sure who your referring to, me or John with that last sentence, but-- "never mind"? If it's me---- Don't go making round about insults then back out of it with "never mind". Please finish the thought. Let me, as well as others know what you mean? It's obvious you don't agree with us(me and John), which is absolutely fine, but to chime in only to make degrading insinuations is, to use your own words, pretty ungentlemenly like don't you think? Your backing of Frank is fine, and I don't have a prob with it, nor should I. If you had left it after the first paragraph, there would be no response from me now. If you like him, that's your perogative. I can't and won't try to change that. On the other hand, I personally don't like him. Because I don't like ANYONE with ego problems and Franks's fluctuates, but sometimes gets to be the size of a small country. But again, you and I are entilted to like different people for different reasons. But from what I gather in your post, you are insuating I'm not a gentlemen, and that I'm not even-handed. Why? Because I don't agree with the self-proclaimed "super genius" Frank? Or is it that you don't like the way I disagree? Either way is fine by me, but if your going to take the time to post that you do not like me or my opinions, then take the time to post why. Last time I checked I was free to express my opinions here. About Frank, about Riverside, about anything regarding sim-racing. And you were free to disagree with them. But your only contibution to this entire thread was a semi-disguised insult. Do you know me? Have we met? Have we raced together? There are plenty of people who post to this board that I think are less then stellar characters, but -I- have enough common sense not to publicly judge those that I do not know. You know enough of Frank to judge his as you stated above, so do I. You do not know me, which you have stated above, therefore have no room for judgement yet. Please keep your premature characther judging to yourself. Good day sir. If it's John---- Disregard the previous paragraph. John can fight his own battles. LOL

Well somehow.. For "you", cutting the course is not ok. The grey zone is obviously not going that far. But "your" opinion of being a sportsman is just an opinion. Most of the people I know, from GPL online and N3 online know that Im a sportsman. I wouldn't be in HGNS if I wasn't a sportsman and a gentleman. Still the point is. Why don't you say anything about everything else that is in our virtual world that has an unfair advantage ??? The Arcade view, unrealistic setups, some Fxx windows, modifying the track.dat for a more clearer view of the track, having a speedometer, etc.. Do you see my point? All those things should be also mentioned if for you cutting the course gives you an unfair advantage. But of course you will probably say that those arguments are non-sense <g> But do not call me a sportsman, because by doing that yourself you aren't a sportsman. -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... > Me? Ego trip ? You must be one of those pissed-off TEN users who whined all > the time and didn't liked me as a NROS Guide. Tell us what _you really_ > feel... Well, first off Frank, I never dealt with you on TEN when you were a guide because starting -about- 9 months ago the only time I would log on would be for OSCAR races or practice, but I do know of the instances you refer to and they happened much more recent than that, and in fact I somewhat sympathized with you when that whole situation arose. I told you what I really feel in the last post. Why do you keep doing this. This is the second or third time now in this thread someone has explained themselves, and then you ask them to tell you how they feel. Are you not reading the posts? Or are your retention skills lacking? I don't like people who have ego problems. Yours tends to be a problem sometimes. What don't you understand about that. And if your waiting for particular instances, then your shit out of luck, because I'm not going to do it publicly just so you can have more stuff to feed off of. Hey listen Frank. I regret saying it now only because I didn't know it was a C&H line. I am a big Calvin&Hobbes fan but just don't remember all the jokes that were told. But you coulda done one little thing to prevent myself, and others in the past, from mistaking it as a personal quote. Put a credit to the strip after the quote. Simple and the proper thing to do anyway. I apologize for thinking it was a personal quote. But the way you use it now, it's VERY easily mistable as one. Sure. I've been reading your posts and opinions for -about- 2 years now. I know plenty about you. Well, I HAVE raced you in the past once or twice(quite a while ago, so I'll let that pass), and have been involved in past discussions with you both at Jacob's NG, and the old TEN NG. Your memory is lacking that's all. Again, not my fault. I have communicated with you in the past on several occasions, all under my screenname, which by the way is show in my NG ID. If you just took the time to look. Where as I may not know such things as what your height and weight are, I'm sure there are plenty of people who you would consider good friends in this community who do not know either. Your point has no validity. Plus I could just go back to the old TEN NG and do a search for the pictures you posted of yourself a few months ago and approximate your H and W anyway. Frank you post here, and Jacob's regularly, and have even posted pictures of yourself, yet cringe at the fact that someone may not like everything they see about you. Grow up. But from the pictures it looked like your only what 17, 18? You have plenty of maturing yet to come. Some difference here Frank. Like I said before, I have been reading your posts and opinions for -about- 2 years now. The original poster, admitted himself, he knew me from this thread only. HUGE difference. So take your Pot and Kettle and go back to the kitchen.

First of all it's a fun thread. A little more and Im bringing back LeChicken haha! (inside r.a.s. joke) <snip> Since you were obviously not pissed at me for being a NROS Guide I retake that remark. As you may or may not know, I was considered by many as a traitor for being associated with TEN. I was told that numbers of time, and attacked by many. So it's normal I assume that since you were a previous NROS drivers that was the reason. Whatever the situation, a signature file should never be taken seriously. Here is a nice website with hundreds of .sig file for you to laugh. And think that those people post them actually in their message! Do they think what is written ? Nope, any usenet regular should know that. And no need for a credit since it's a little different (the famous realise/realize). So stop taking this seriously, that's the trick on the Usenet. Outshined yes I situate your screename now. The Newsgroup message detention was a month on the old t.g.s.n. FYI Im 5feet11inches and 7/8 (I still wish I can grow at 20years old of a eight of an inch to go to the magic 6feet bar ;) ). Your wrong !!!!!!! You clearly ow him and I an apology. Re-read what he said and you would know there is no difference between him and you. But please do not go and judge me, but on the other case you say that people can't judge you : -------- Forgive me for barging in on what possibly ought to be a private conversation, but Frank has long impressed me as one of the most even-handed and gentlemanly people in this newsgroup. I've seen nothing in this thread which changes my opinion. -------- All this for cutting a ***y corner for a second and a half... -- -- Fran?ois Mnard <ymenard> -- May the Downforce be with you... Petty did cut the apex at turn 6 closer than most. He would drop the inside front tire off the inside of the turn and use it like the guide flag of a slot car to hold the car tight. He was the only person to do this consistantly. I spent a lot of time in turn 6. No one ever cut the track "every lap" as in the game. I get the impression that the guys at Papyrus looked at highlight shots, which of course show things that don't normally happen. While there are off road excersions from time to time, the dirt does not offer the same traction as pavement. Staying on the road is/was faster. We need someone with .LP experience to edit the line to the one used 99.99% of the time. Other than the line, Riverside is fantastic. Ontario is done almost perfectly also. I spent some time at that track also. buzard
