DX7a:Safe for GPL NL N3???

Is DirectX 7a safe for GPL and NASCAR sims?

Users asked whether DirectX 7a, which cannot be uninstalled, was safe with GPL, N3 and NASCAR Legends. Most reported that it worked well and improved force feedback, though some Logitech wheel users needed a calibration patch. A poster's claim that DirectX never causes problems drew a heated rebuttal from users who had had to reinstall Windows after DirectX 7.

Has anybody tried DX7a with NL, GPL, and N3? It warns that it can't be uninstalled, so I want to be sure before I download it. Steve

Heh...I was gonna ask the same thing...Let someone else be the guinnea pig this time!!!
After installing a Creative Geforce Annihilator Pro, I've had serious problems with FPS in GPL. It looks like FPS got a tad better with DirectX7a, which really isn't a surpise, as one of the DirectX7a's features is lowered loss of FPS when using force feedback (I have a MSFF wheel). I also tried Viper Racing. Couldn't find any difference in performance whatsoever. Jon

DX7 is completely safe. It actually improves FF performance in N3 and FS2000. I don't understand Why people have concerns everytime a new DX comes out. It's completely foolish. I've had every version of DX on 3 different machines and NEVER had a problem.
PHendrix27 18 Dec 1999#509527
I put the ORIGINAL DX7 on my computer, when it came out. And that version messed up all of my controllers. Many people have had these problems. That's the reason for DX7a.
I did DX7a this morning then ran a league race. It went very well. I haven't tried NL or N3 yet, but it should work with them too. -- Richard "ZZ" Busch Official member: Screamers Racing League Sim Racing Mag Honda Challenge NASROC ---------------- Busch Motorsports: Remember racecar is racecar spelled backward ----------------- Busch Carpentry: Plans?, Oh, you mean that napkin sketch?
O.K. I downloaded and installed it. N3 and NL run as smooth as butter, but I haven't tried GPL yet. I don't know if I am getting a frame rate improvement (never had a problem anyway), but I assume so, however the graphics seem to look a little richer, and my MSFF wheel seems less 'spikey'. A 43 car field runs very well, with all the graphics full on in 1026X800. All versions of DX have worked perfectly on all of my systems. Don't spread mindless "evil Microsoft" paranoia just because YOU aren't configuring YOUR machine correctly.

No problems here with DX7a or any other DX update for that matter. I've tried it with GPL, NL, N3, SCGT, F1RS, MGPRS, CMR, DTR and TOCA2. The only difference I notice in FF effects is a better "on center" feel in Papy sims, I took 2 seconds off of my best time at Riverside because I was able to drive smoother through the esses. It's not completly foolish. I tried installing direct X 7 & I was forced to reformat my hard drive because my steering wheel would no longer work with N3. Tried reinstalling, uninstalling & recalibrating but nothing would work :(

His point is valid. Many people have many problems with new DX versions. Including myslef. DX7 wreaked havoc with some USB controllers (SideWinder Pro USB, for one) and games (MechWarrior 3, for one). It pays to be cautions in DX land, especially since it is not uninstallable. If MS would take away that blasted limitation that's been there for years, then we might be a little more willing to experiment. The original version of DirectX 7 is not safe on every system, which is why Microsoft felt they needed to create an updated version. If DirectX 7 worked correctly, there would be no need to fix it. It is great that you didn't have any problems with it. However, all PC's are very diverse and it is difficult to make software that can account for every hardware configuration. You shouldn't accuse people of not configuring their machine correctly - it is Microsoft's job to make it work. I am a MCP, and DirectX 7 screwed up my controller, period. Any IS person also knows that any software upgrade should be tested before implementing it on a production machine. I feel people posting to find out if the update is safe is completely warranted. Not everybody has an extra machine, the time, or the expertise to test out a new piece of software and be able to restore their machine to an opperational status after that test is a failure. I have not yet tested DX7a because I want to get a feel from others who had problems with the original version before I waste my time with this update. I hope you are as lucky in the future with your software. Although I personnally do not feel Microsoft is one of satan's minions, I do acknowledge that their software is still programmed by humans and the last time I checked human's aren't always perfect. Please don't flame people who are just trying to be careful. But that's just my opinion. Thanks and have a nice day. I'm using DX7 and have found it completely painless , although I did reinstall GPL just to be sure.

Please don't start tossing the Napalm. I have two very competent friends who had assorted controller freak-outs with DX7. Any software package as big and hairy as Windoze (and its various subsystems) is going to have "occasional" problems, even with "correctly" configured hardware. -Greg Note! Anti-spam tactics engaged! Hey, Mr.Lemming (aka as M$ zealot), I'm not talking about MY system, it works great with DX7, I'm talking about the dozens of posts complaining about messed up systems after installing DX7. Please tell all the game developers your mythical test procedures. They could save a lot of time and money: Test 1: It works on my system. Test 2-100: Not necessary, see Test 1.
