Notable threadWorld Sports Cars first look and screenshots
A first look and 27 screenshots of the in-development World Sports Cars sim drew excitement about its tyre-contact-patch physics and graphics. Sceptics recalled hyped sims that never shipped, such as the Can-Am and Trans-Am titles. Developer Chris West confirmed the suspension was fully modelled and that WSC had nothing to do with Ford Racing, and Scott Husted explained that Motorsims cancelled its Can-Am sim after the SCCA dropped the series.

Well, I'd like to believe they have modelled the compliance of the ***

: This quote from the article should whet your appetite hehe...
: "The cars are modelled through the contact patches of the tyres with the road,
: and nothing else. No fudging, no canned effects. The tyre model is using the
: latest technique from the SAE dynamic conferences. Also modelled are the
: weight and mass transfer of the car, the suspension movement and much more."
: I guess it's time for you to ingest that information in your book for good. :P
Well, I'm still holding back on my meal. The tyre models they refer to
are basic relationships between slip angle, downforce and coefficient of
friction. Their mention of contact patches most likely just means that
the resultant sideforces are applied at four distint points where the
*** meets the road instead of one central mass point. not to knock it,
this is a fairly sophisticated way to do it. But a dynamic model of
compliant tires? Not in real time on a PC.
Still, I'm stocking up on ketchup in case these boys can do something most
PhDs can't.

Do World Sports Cars use grooved tires???
We are going to be in Sim Heaven if they can reproduce the sound of the Judd
V10.
Of course, I won't say the same for the neighbors<vbg>.

often, when cars are being worked on or in transport or storage, they put rain

The anticipation building behind this sim sounds alot like GPL a year and

Actually, the anticipation and build-up reminds me a lot more of Trans-
Am Racing 1967-1972 . . . and look at how much we're enjoying THAT
title these days. Oh, wait -- that would be "The Dukes Of Hazard" now,
wouldn't it? Hmmm . . .
Sorry to be such a wet blanket about all this, but I can't help but
feel that a project like this with such lofty aspirations and no
definite deadline has the potential to be either truly great, or to be
the ultimate form of vaporware -- and until we see the finished
product, the jury is still out. And if/when it DOES materialize, I'm
guessing that even those of you with Athlon 700 systems or better will
still be sorely taxed to run it.
I do admit that it looks and sounds great, but until I see the final
product run on MY computer, I'm going to try to keep the e***ment in
check.

I hate to be a stick-in-the-mud about this too but I feel when
something looks too good to be true it always is.
Graphics that photo-realisitc HAVE to have a price somewhere.
Either dumb AI, slow-as-molasses frame rates or SOMETHING.
Tell me I need a 1GHZ machine with 256 Megs RAM and a GeForce card to
run it at 25 fps and THEN I will believe the hype.
Or better yet, put out a tech demo showing it work. With AI and
running on a 400Mhz P2 with 64 megs of RAM and a TNT2 Ultra card.
Screenshots don't mean diddly.
Being an avid flight-simmer as well I remember when all the hype about
Flanker 2.0 was spreading.
The company released some fatalistic screen shots of the game.
After closer inspection myself and some others said no f***ing way.
Too crisp and smooth. The screenshots look doctored.
Well, as it turns out Flanker 2 does NOT look like the screen shots
showed.
I posted a review about Ford Racing a while back and the folks making
WSC contacted me the next day saying how Ford Racing was not what they
wanted to make.
They said they wanted my input as a beta tester and would be
contacting me shortly.
Hmmp.. I haven't heard diddly from them since that last e-mail 2
months ago and it looks like SOME people are already beta testing for
them.
Did they just do it (ask me to beta test) to shut me up?
Or maybe they only want people who will spread the good word about how
great WSC is going to be to beta test?
Makes one wonder.

Hi Ray
The suspension is fully modelled and moves correctly, it is the only way to
get the dynamic roll centres the handling model needs. I have set the cars
up to have massive suspension movement to test the changing camber etc as
the wheel moves up and down. Hopefully we will be able to post some videos
soon (publisher willing) to show the suspension at work, anyone at ECTS last
year who saw the game could tell you it is done correctly and not just a
case of moving the wheel up and down a little and making the body roll.

Just to be fair, the CAN-AM sim by Motorsims got canned because of the state
of confusion with the SCCA and the other sanctioning bodies in regards to
sports car racing. SCCA pulled the plug on the CAN-AM series last year and
thus Motorsims, who own a SCCA license, cancelled the title along with it.
Although the original TA sim was cancelled, Motorsims is currently working
on a Trans-Am title.
However, I agree with you guys. I do not count on anything until I have
actually had a chance to test the title.

Its nice to see that there are some game/sim developers who do read this NG
and take the time to participate. No doubt the above message will nip in
the bud any uncertainty about that particular topic and prevent any
negative discussions that could have occurred.

Yeah, but who cares about modern Can-Am anyway? The real Can-Am was the mid
sixties to mid 70's (Jim Hall and his Chaparrals, Bruce McLaren and Dennis
Hulme in the McLaren, Mark Donohue and the Porsche ....). However, with the
poor sales of GPL, the likelihood of seeing this wonderful era represented in a
sim are probably pretty remote.

I don't think I could stomach another 30 year old era super sim.
Why the hell can't they make a modern sim as realistic as GPL?

I agree.. I am huge fan of the 'real' CAN-AM series. They were true racing
machines =)
The CAN-AM sim being put out by Motorsims was to include the Spec Racers as
a training class but they were also going to include a historic aspect if I
recall correctly.
It is possible, but do not quote me, that we can get the West brothers to
implement a historic CAN-AM vehicle in WSC. I know I have discussed it
with them ;)

While I agree with you gentlemen on this, that Can Am was, and will be
forever, one of the most extreme (and missed) series in motorsport, I find
the prospect of peddaling a Ferrari 333SP or an R&S MKIII around Laguna Seca
quite invitating. And at least the sound of those are up with the Can-Ams
:-)
