Mike Blackstock (one of the really fast guys

that they give him an edge.

I have a 21" monitor and I completely suck at GPL. I'm sure I would
completely suck just as much or more on a smaller monitor, too.

I have been driving GPL for 14 months using a 14" monitor. I am wondering if
upgrading to a 19" would have any benifit to GPL lap times? Does a bigger
screen allow you to pick out finer details thus improving the driving line.
Thanks

I was going to say the same thing :-)

No, not really, Jan. A higher resolution helps, certainly, but the Catch-22
is that unless you have the grunt to run at 800 x 600 or indeed 1024 x 768,
then any advantage in detail gain will be lost by stuttering frame-rate.
The funny thing is that since I've had the sim (October 1998) I've gone from
640 x 480 up to 1024 x 768 and back again! Even though I have the computing
power to run a full field at the highest resolution without any dramas I
still believe that I get a whisker better "smoothness" at the lower end of
the scale. This fractional gain in sensitivity far outweighs the
"prettyness" of the finer graphics...I can still put the front wheel exactly
where I want it!

It doesn't make you any faster, but it does make it more comfortable
to drive. Here at work I play GPL on a 21" monitor, and that's just
awesome, but of course I'm not supposed to play GPL much at work :)
At home I've been playing GPL a bit on my roommate's PC which has a
17". I've been setting a few personal bests there lately, but the
screen just feels so small and I feel like I'm squinting and
concentrating too hard just to see the road compared to the 21". I
just bought a 19" last week (slowly building my own PC) and put that
on my roommate's PC and that made quite a big difference - I'm not
any faster, but it did feel more comfortable, less squinting. And
to think I used to play GPL on a 15" monitor back in '98. argh :)
So larger monitors don't make you any faster, they just make it a lot
more comfortable to look at (which I guess could improve your
ability to concentrate over a full length GP, at least).
Grant.
At least it would be healthy to change better monitor with higher refresh
rates...If you think your eyes, you'll buy one

Two weeks ago I finally upgraded my old HP 14" monitor to a 17" Sony
Trinitron Multiscan E200. And the difference is like night and day. For one
thing, you can run refresh rates of 85hz ( recomended), and 1024x786
resolution. This alone makes a big difference.

Ok, dumb question. How do you change the refresh rates? I assume that I can
find the limits for my monitor somewhere, but where do you make the change? I
didn't see any settings under Display...

Should be in there. Make sure you don't put it higher than your monitor can
handle or you'll warp the space-time continuum and kill us all.

I recently upgraded my whole system, however the first upgrade was to a Sony
17' HMD A200 (previous monitor 14' goldfish bowl!) It didn't improve the
frame rate but it did allow me to run at a greater resolution and a higher
refresh rate.
Previously I found it almost impossible to drive "in-car" because I just
couldn't pick out the apex and braking points. Now the in-car is great but
I still prefer the "roll bar" view which IMHO just can't be beat. I would
certainly recommend a monitor upgrade.
Of course the down side to upgrading to a good monitor is that you then
realise just how much the rest of your system is lacking so you then feel
the need to upgrade further!
Cheers

Hmm. It gives me two choices - Adapter Default, and Optimal. Somehow I was
expecting more...

Up until last month, I ran gpl and Nascar3 on a 14 inch monitor. And I
raced strickly with the***pit view. You're just having problems getting
adjusted to the***pit view after all the time you spent with the rollbar
view. But if it's realism you're after, then spend the time. However,
there is a good compromise. There is a high cocpit view out that raises you
a few feet higher than the regular view, and gives you much better view down
the track:http//warpedracing.figc.net/gaugepages/index/html
