I'm not able to get any of the addon tracks to work with the latest version

netKar versus LFS versus GPL debate continues
Starting from a question about netKar add-on tracks, the thread debated whether netKar or Live for Speed deserved the 'new GPL' title. Some found netKar's loss of grip unpredictable, while others praised LFS's tyre model, especially for front-wheel-drive cars. Bruce Kennewell argued GPL's appeal lay in its historical setting, and tips covered force feedback strength and unlocking LFS cars.

I haven't tried them, but I was told that they need to have a few small
additions to work in multiplayer.

That review is only for 0.9.6 . I think 0.9.9 is a considerable
improvement over it.....
You must be joking, right?
Fun; yes.
GPL; most certainly not!

Have you tried the latest release? I dont think anyone could reasonably
suggest that it's inferior to GPL anymore.

For me there is something unpleasant about the way NetKar's cars lose
grip, even after a few laps. In GPL I can understand what's happening
even if I don't like it :-) In NetKar I keep getting those "WTF was
that?" moments, the kind of thing that put me off games like f12000...
or was it 2001? All the versions before 2002 anyway, and I'm still not
so sure about 2002.
Subjective opinion, obviously, and I really *want* to enjoy NetKar. But
if I switch from NetKar to LFS (a fairer comparison than GPL perhaps)
then the cars immediately feel more... er, in touch with real tarmac.
Whatever that means.
After posting my initial reactions to this latest release I am trying to
give it a fair crack of the whip. But at the moment we're talking wet
tea-towel rather than cat o' nine tails.
If a paypal button were to appear on Stefano's site I would contribute
something though. It deserves encouragement.

<Shrug> I really don't understand it when people say things like this. In
the grand scheme of sims, Netkar probably feels more similar to LFS than any
other sim out there from where I sit.... In terms of being 'in touch with
the tarmac' that has been my only criticism of Papy games over the years.
F1C was a considerable step forward in that department and Netkar and LFS
excel there too IMO.
Netkar has that 'shit how did that happen' experience which immediately puts
me off.
I gave the Modena 27 laps at Falkenberg last night to try and force myself
to like it,but still not convinced

Okay, enough of this: we get the point. I still see LFS as a much better
racing simulation, whether it's free or not. So if we're looking for the
new GPL, then LFS is it.

I like the fact you can change the screen resolution without having to
run some daft 3d config thing like you have to in N2k3 and F12k2! The
controller config is good too, and puts the GP3/4 crammond shite to
shame. The GUI is hassle free, unlike F12001/2. I'd like to see support
added for actlabs shifter and an analog clutch, though.
IMO this sim looks very promising indeed!

Strange. I get the opposite impression.
Sliding is not as catchable as in GPL, depending on which car you're driving
(especially once you go past a certain slip angle). Are you sure this isn't
what you're referring to?

This 'next GPL' comparison is kind of silly anyway, what makes GPL
special is that it simulates one of the most interesting years in F1
history. And allthough N2003 for example is technically 10x better
than GPL, it can't keep me interested in the way GPL does.
But anyway, this evening I downloaded and tested both LFS and Netkar.
LFS: Personally I find LFS quite boring. I don't get a sensation of
speed at all and controlling the car is very easy. The graphics look
great, but with 5 other AI cars in front of me the AI drops with about
40% :-/ Maybe LFS is more fun when you unlock the faster cars, I did
so with the first release of LFS, but the only thing I can remember
about that is that I quickly grew tired of LFS so I can't really
bothered to go through the unlocking fase now.
Unless someone can convince me that LFS really gets a lot more
exciting with the faster cars..
Netkar: Gave it a try a couple of months ago, can't remember which
release version it was. I was impressed, but not enough to keep it on
my HD. After reading good things about the new version I installed it
(most easy installation I ever had in a racing sim btw), selected the
F3000 and Falkenberg, and waited a couple of seconds for the whole
bunch to load.
I gave gas and WHOOOOOAAAAAAA HOLY ****** ! That sound! That sensation
of speed!!! Very, very impressed with Netkar. The last time I had such
a big grin on my face was the first time I played GPL ;)
LFS is in a further stage of development than Netkar, but Netkar shows
so much more long-term promise.. I'm sure the West Bro's weren't happy
when they saw what one hobbyist programmer delivered here ;)
Please guys.. tell me the Ring has allready been converted to
Netkar???

Maybe cause it actually feels like a real roadcar on the limit? (driving the
FWD)
I think LFS has the best tiremodel too, of any sim right now actually.
(except the RWD-cars.. they feel wierd)
but the FWD is just a masterpiece!.
sure could get better, but its better then the rest right now.
and it has actually working tire-pressure in lfs, if you have forcefeedback
you will feel what i mean.

The grip thing in LFS works so real!. Very talented programmer scawen!.
Still it doesnt regain grip really like a real tire (well not like my cars
tires), but its so close, that it doesnt bother me :)
Netkar is just ice-skating for me, and just feels wierd. :/
but its getting better and better

The feeling of speed between LFS and Netkar feels identical to me (when
running the same FOV of course) You can't really compare the LFS cars to an
F3000 though. The main problem with LFS is that its 3D engine is very
sluggish on anything less than a 3GHz PC. (For no apparent reason)
F1C is more GPL like IMO

Yeah, but you said your 50ms LCD was fine too.....it's all relative. Bottom
line is that LFS runs at nearly half the frame rate of Netkar, F1C or N2003
at a given level of detail.

Who knows, maybe it's a conspiracy :-) It might even be down to people's
controllers... the default FF may be confusing me and my Logi Momo. Next
time I try NK I'll disable FF and see if that helps me feel more at
ease.

I'm using a MOMO as well. The default FF strength is absolutely ferocious
on these things and I strongly recommend to people that they turn it down in
the Logi control panel to about 50-60%. As you suggest, it can completely
destroy your impression of the way grip is conveyed.
I'm reminded of a person who came into RAS ages ago slagging off at F1 2002
for having a ridiculous feeling of cornering grip - turns out he was using a
MOMO with positive FF instead of negative FF......lol

I was very impressed when I dropped a few extra passengers in the LFS cars
and checked what happened. Drive around the skidpad and watch the tires
*deform*. Having autocrossed a lot of fast hatches, the LFS model, whether
it's based on a 1000MHz 323 DOF Euler-integrated quantum model (phew...
how's that for BS?), lookup tables, or voodoo, is pretty much spot on for
the FWD cars, and a lot of fun.

Playable, but you'd triple that in Netkar (at least with the AA and AF crap
turned off) : )
Now that there's more than 1 track for LFS, people might start to take it
seriously. I'm a fan of racing in online leagues and in a sim with 1 track,
that's not really possible.

Either I'm very stong or my Momo is weaker than yours.. even at 100%
the ff is not too heavy on my system. And I do like my ff on the weak
side. The only game on which I really have to turn down the ff is 4x4
Evo II (hey, I got it for free with the Radeon card..)
After driving 10 laps in this game with ff on 100% and my arms feel
numb :-/
Andre
For me it's apparent in several ways; the graphics, the sound, the "feel" of
the cars, the lack of AI.
There is also the fact that I approached GPL from the very outset as a
"virtual" encapsulation of a segment of motor-racing history and I have
maintained that attitude ever since.
Apart from other "era" sims such as the NASCAR series (including Legends)
and the IndyCar series from Papyrus, I find that most of them have little
appeal. I don't want to sample several different types of car around a
couple of different styles of circuit. I never was one for the "Need For
Speed" genre.
I think I like the historical aspects of a well-crafted and presented racing
game as much as the driving itself.
Probably the reason was so disappointed with, and felt let-down by, "Spirit
Of Speed" and why I'm keen to see the additional historic mods for GPL.

That was me and I didn't exactly slag the game, I indicated I had a problem
with the FF pulling into the turn rather than providing centering force.
The game defaulted to 100%, so *excuse me* for assuming the slider would
scale from 0%-100%, just like any other racing sim. Missing a setting in a
game is one thing, having to manually adjust configuration files to get your
wheel working properly is another; an aspect which is still present in F1C,
BTW.

I agree the FWD drive is a hoot and pretty spot on in LFS...sadly now
with S1 most people seem to wanna drive the Lx cars.
I bought S1 and i'm totally behind what they're doing, they didn't
talk bullshit like some other certain people, but they just delivered
and kept on delivering..and the interaction of the deelopers with the
users is great...and on top of it all they can take it when someone
critiques their product...no deleting posts on forums and such.
But the RWD cars are odd, not by far as good as the FWD. And there are
more things which are odd but the product keeps on getting better and
better so i'm sure that will get sorted out...
Anyways...on Netkar...i do think this is the next GPL..as a game it's
not very developed yet, but as a sim i find it rather aweseome.
In terms of fun factor GPL stil beats them all, but i really think the
physics part has long been passed, if not by LFS or Netkar(which i
think both of them have) then surely by N2003. So it's rather amazing
a lot of people still feel GPL rules in the physics department...which
is rather silly if ya ask me...in 20 years time when we have an
absolute real time perfect driving sim people will still go 'but GPL
has better phisics'
Anways, Netkar has a long ways to go aswell, right now what 'annoys'
me most is the tracks are so smooth...no bumping(apart from a rare
larger bump here and there)...which also takes away from the overall
'driving a car on a road' feeling.
Another very good thing about online racing in netkar is that the
roadcars are actually roadcars, take the 360...you can't do anything
about the setup which means if someone out drives you online he's
simply a better sim driver...and not that he uses a way better setup.
Oh well...LFS...netkar...i love em both..

Whoops....no, it wasn't you, Jan. The guy I remember went into a real rant
about what a joke the physics were etc. etc.

I can't think of anyone who doesn't agree that N2003's physics are way
ahead than GPL's physics actually :)

I assumed the 360 is still in beta stage and the setup options will
become available in a later stage? I sure hope so..
And is it possible to raise the rideheight of the F3000?
It's kinda scraping the Nordschleife now, especially on the way to
Flugplatz :)

Ok, no problem.

You can make it easier to beat the ai by handicapping them.
For maximum points (assuming you win a race) run 3-lap pro races. It took me
about 4 hours to get the LX6.
Malc.
Not from what i know, same with the cooper...that's been in since the
beginning...at least since i started playing it which is...
pfffff....from what i can remember a week or two after LFS was first
spotted on the web.
The supra, the GTO, all came later but have all the setup bells and
whistles.
I think the roadcars are and will remain roadcars, "the cooper or 360
you get when you buy one"
Im really very very happy with that cause it means "true" driving
skill racing....and not setting the car up for ages or/and roaming the
web for setups...you just start it up, drive and measures yerself
against other drivers in exactly the same car...luvelu luvely luvely.
The "fixed setup for all drivers" is something i miss in LFS. Looking
at the setups out there, some of which with truely weird
settings(guess the same goes for N2003), yet even the weird setups
which would never be used in real life because they would result in an
awefull car or rotten laptimes result in fast laptimes in the sims.
Physics modelling assside, with the 'no setup' situation with some
cars in netkar at least everyone drives the same thing, be it flawed
or not, and it does result in winners being very proud and loosers
excepting they need to practise more instead of going on the web again
in search of a better setup. An added bonus is that there's none of
the endless 'what are your camber settings...how much grill
tape...where can i get your setup' etc..etc questions in online
games:)
Maybe in the netkar future one of the race versions of the 360 will
get in there with all the setup options for the setup maniacs:)

Best thing to do - is load a RUBBISH setup - add a full AI field - the load
a normal setup and add yourself to the race.
The AI will race with the rubbish setup and thus are easilty beaten.
The short fern bay rally-x track at 5 laps is probably the quickest way to
earn

A shade harsh - I am sure the Nascar fans appreciate the physics and they
are being used to the full. However, for road facing fans like me, Nascars
simply look out of sorts on a road track in real life, so an accurate
simulation of what looks like driving a pig feels like one...
So for us the better physics model of N2003 counts for nothing.
Now an Aussie V8 weighs much the same as a Nascar but looks like it handles
more like a touring car. So how come a Nascar cannot be set up to handle
half decently on a road track - is it the limitations of the regs which
basically mean you are driving a car designed for high speed corners only?
Cheers
Tony

Didn't even realise they were back together 'till I saw 'em on MTV2 the

Yeah it does that in a couple of the high speed corners and spits you off if
you're not carefull
I can't find a ride height setting, but if you take some wing off it doesn't
push you into the ground so much. It's either that or you have to lift
slightly at a couple of points

Maybe they got it too right ;)

Sound's like you were expecting a retail package which would explain your
disappointment. A car doesn't have to have any historic significance for me
to enjoy it - I'm not the sentimental type. I'm just impressed by Netkar as
a technology demonstration as much as anything. It's got top-notch physics,
a superb graphics engine (far better than GPL's) and very clever net code
(as good or better than Papy's) and it's free. Those who say it's the new
GPL aren't saying that it takes an arbitrary season of F1 and encapsulates
the feel of it better than GPL - they're just saying that it's moving the
sim racing genre into the future - much like GPL did back in 1998.

You mean it can't?
That's strange, i mean most guys are faster in WC cars than in the 67 cars
on the same tracks.
Of course the rubber's a lot better, but the handling ain't shabby either.
