★ Landmark threadLive for Speed S1 released

J.D. Ellis announced the release of Live for Speed S1, which added three tracks with many configurations, new cars such as the LX4 and LX6, and online play for about $20. Early buyers reported key servers struggling under demand and praised the new content. Larry objected strongly to the online unlock system as a form of product activation, while others said it worked painlessly.

3 tracks with about 20 configurations possible . Also a 2 or 8 lane drag strip and a skid pad.And some really cool new cars too. Been playing for the last hour and it's worth the price of admission. Also, don't forget the re-configurable autocross area. :-) I'm just glad it's finally out. I was starting to resent Blackwood after having only that one track since last year...... Chris

Oh, God. PLEASE don't tell me this thing has that draconian disaster known as Product Activation in it? If it does, S1 is the LAST level I'll buy. I guess it's intended to work in much the same way as product activation for XP, but for me, the activation itself is not the problem, it's the fact that it's Microsoft that are doing it, and what they would do with the info. There are no similar issues with the lfs dev team. Malc.
Larry wrote: > Oh, God. PLEASE don't tell me this thing has that draconian disaster known > as Product Activation in it? Larry: It's not nearly as bad as all the blathering on the RSC forum would lead you to believe. I had no trouble with it. Took a matter of seconds, and worked the first time. I guess from the developer's end, it's a combination of CYA against piracy, a way to boot wreckers, and means of tracking race data for the LFS World portion of their site. Certainly not a deal breaker, IMHO. -jde

No kidding; what a load of hysteria in the forums. The unlocking bit worked fine here, too; no problem at all. Plus, since the key isn't written to the registry, a simple backup of your LFS directory once it's unlocked eliminates any hardware/reformat issues. For the very reasonable fee they're asking, I was all too happy to support another sim with solid multiplayer - I should think most everyone in this NG would do likewise. Looking forward to seeing where they're able to go with LFS... SB

It provides NOTHING for the paying customer except for heartache is some way or another. Every company that has used it has upset customers, and it doesn't really stop Piracy in any way. Paying customers are the only one's that, um, pay for it's inclusion. PowerQuest has also done this with DriveImage 7.0. Not only that, but the product has been neutered from what it was in version 2002 and is now virtually useless to me. I have purchased EVERY single version of DriveImage and PartitionMagic since they were released, spending many hundreds of dollars on upgrades. That is now over. I didn't see it coming from PowerQuest, and had purchased before I realized it. In the past, I had no reason to distrust them, nor to think the product wouldn't be an improvement. I got screwed for thinking that way this time and I will not forgive them. What's worse, DriveImage has become just another also-ran backup program. It's usefulness as an IMAGING product has been completely lost now. I pay for ALL of my software, and I feel like I have earned the right to bitch about such things :) -Larry "J.D. I think the LX4 will end up being my favourite... Not as tough as the LX6, but delightfully squirrely all the same. Plus, it's a kind of race car that hasn't been exactly done to death in other sims! Now if I could only get the top off...?

I don't mind having the roof, but I'd like to be able to see though the windows in all the cars so I can look though the car ahead to see the road, brakelights & stuff. From what I understand if you copy the folder, format your drive & re-install the same OS (ie maintenance) and copy the folder back it will continue to work. If you upgrade your PC it may need to be re-registered, and if you run out of keys, you can mail the devs for assistance. In this respect it's very much like the Microsoft system. Fortunately this is not Microsoft we're talking about ;-) Malc.

Same thing that happened with gpl & the no-CD patch they included in the CPU fix. Essentially they haven't really thought that far ahead yet (understandably) but wanted to get the game out quickly, and this was the most reliable copy protection they could come up with in the time available. Scawen more or less said that if the time comes that the lfs dev team get bored with it & move on, they'll more than likely put out a patch to remove the registration requirement. Abandonware basically. That time is pretty far off though, so don't hold your breath. Malc.
