Sony announces Formula One 2003
SCEE announces a new F1 game and an exclusive four-year licensing deal
with Formula One Administration Ltd.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has today announced that Formula One
2003 for the PlayStation 2 will be the first game to benefit from the
exclusive licensing deal it has signed with Formula One Administration
Ltd. Under the terms of the deal, the Formula One franchise will be
exclusive to SCEE and to the PlayStation 2 for the next four years.
"This four-year exclusive relationship is the basis for a very exciting
partnership between the world's leading motorsport and the most
successful video game platform on the planet," said Chris Deering,
president of SCEE. "Together I believe we will create a totally new
consumer game experience that combines the power of the PlayStation 2
with the exhilaration and spectacle of Formula 1, and short of pulling
on gloves and a helmet, this is as close to being in the driver's seat
as you're going to get."
According to today's press release, Formula One 2003 will be the only
game to feature up-to-date statistics, driver likenesses, and teams. The
game will also incorporate all the new rules that were introduced to the
sport this season. Disappointingly, it appears that the game will be
single-player-only, but if the AI of the drivers is as good as SCEE is
claiming, they should provide a lasting challenge. Formula One 2003 is
scheduled for release in Europe next month. We'll bring you more
information on the game as soon as it becomes available.
Notable threadSony announces Formula One 2003 with exclusive licence
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe announced Formula One 2003 for PlayStation 2 together with a four-year exclusive licensing deal with Formula One Administration. PC sim racers were dismayed, expecting no more licensed F1 PC games after EA's final title, and suggested boycotts or unlicensed clones. Some noted that console and PC licences are sometimes separate.

Gee, I must be jaded, because I've heard corporate spiel before and I
just don't believe this verbal diarrhea anymore.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to be proven wrong, but all the crap that

these days, until I see the actual product.

We need to organise a letter to Bernie explaining that *if* this is in fact
an exclusive license, his greed just cost him more than he can imagine.
I will personally host (with some community help over time I am sure) every
free F1 season update, mod., etc. so the whole world can enjoy F1 *computer*
racing despite his myopic moronic dealings.
We should also make it clear that none of us will buy *anything* from "F1
Inc." until this situation is corrected.
He needs to understand this is like Windows vs. Linux...and by going to the
ridiculous extreme that he has (makes Microsoft look good), more energy and
effort and polish will happen at our end and he'll end up with nothing at
the end of the day because the license will no longer be worth anything
since the end-result product can be had for free.
Who is with me on this?

Too little.... Too late, this is already a done deal and no ammount of
grass roots pettitioning will change the fact that Bernie got his $$$
from Sony for the EXCLUSIVE rights to F1.

I think he meant PC royalties from other F1 games (ie. EA's F1 200x). I
wonder if this move will mean the end of the F1 series for EA Sports? All
of their games boast "if it's in the game, it's in the game" so surely they
won't put out a product with no F1 licensing. Of course, most of us won't
mind with all of the terrific mods that would come out and make it better
anyway, but I'm guessing that EA will drop the franchise.

I though EA had already confirmed that F1 Career Challenge (or whatever
it's called) was the last F1 game they were doing.

If they don't, then I won't even care about the game. I'm not about to buy a
PS2 just for ONE game...

It wouldn't be worth buying (the PS2 version), anyway.

I hope the extra covers it, because unlike the last few years when there
have been more F1 sims than even we would want, now there will be none.

There is the possibility that someone could easily make a game which
is a 'clone' of the cars and tracks and stuff, like Monaco Racing
Simulation 2, or whatever.
It won't cost them nearly as much to put out a good game without
having to fork out for the ludicrous licencing fee.
Monaco failed because, without a licence, you've got no mass-market
sales appeal (except for the sim community).
But with no officially licenced game on the PC to be compared
against...
Its also possible that, without the F1 licence, EA will turn the ISI
team to another type of racing? Cart? Touring Cars? They aren't
exactly going to let ISI go to waste, are they?
And that wouldn't be a bad thing, either would it? If they did, how
long before the sim-community makes a superb F1 mod for it?
They are already busy doing NASCAR Thunder 2004.

So buy one for GT4 *and* Formula One 2003 ;-)

Not me.
Giving all those F1 licences away gave us GP4 and F1 2002 as the best the PC
had to offer. Aside from the GTR2002 mod, there was nothing really great
about either. I have Formula One 2002 and I have to say that it is better
than GP4 and PC F1 2002 (which is much better than PS2 F1 2002). It was
quite a step up from Formula One 2001.
To be honest, I think it all shakes out quite well:
Sony do F1
ISI do that crappy NASCAR stuff
Geoff Crammond retires
Codemasters do CrapWagons
DID (whatever they are called now) do WRC
Papy do CART (!!!)
I think the best series (F1, CART, WRC) are mated up with the best racing
developers. It all depends on that last line!

I realize this response is pretty late (and hope this hasn't been
answered yet), but in my experience console licenses and PC licenses are
seperate. Hell, often times they're seperate in different territories.
Sony continues to crow about their PS2 exclusives: Grand Theft Auto 3
and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. In both cases, they got PC releases
as well, simply because Sony considers the two wildly different markets
with very little overlap. It's possible that Sony's announcement is
that they have _console_ exclusivity, and the whole reason EA is out is
because the game doesn't sell as well as their NASCAR games and they
refuse to pay the amount for licensing given how much they earn.
It will remain to be seen, however, how it all plays out.
