Notable threadProject Wildfire announces free NR2003 mods

A link to Project Wildfire, a team including many names from Papyrus game credits, announced free mods and tracks for NASCAR Racing 2003 Season. Posters were excited and posted wish lists (GPL 2, CART, Aussie V8s, Trans-Am and Featherlite modifieds), leading to a long tangent explaining the appeal of Australian V8 Supercars and Bathurst history.

Quick, someone ask 'em if they'll make a featherlite modified mod for NR2003 after the CTS mod comes out! :P Before you laugh, it /is/ a NASCAR sanctioned series. ;) -Will

NO.... what we need is a Aussie V8 Supercar mod. If you don't believe me, just ask Goy :-) Steve

I haven't seen a hell of a lot, that's for sure.. Just what we get on freebie vision at 5:30 in the morning, Channel 5. I'll keep my eyes peeled though.

Dangit! Aussie Commentators for Aussie racing? What's next? And why does SpeedchannelVision use an Aussie for some of it's coverage? And why do rally broadcasts sound better with an english accent than an American accent? And how do Japanese commentators spit out all the multi-- hyphenated--multi--syllabic sounding names? uhmmm where were we? dave henrie
Speaking of Trans-Am - what ever happened to a sim which was mooted a couple of years ago? It was going to represent Trans-Am as it was in its glory-years, back in the 1960's. Bruce.

Great "rice" (as the Ozzies might say) between Larry Perkins & Peter Brock, but then...it ends 6 laps into a 160-lap race. Hey, where's the rest of it? And do you have an in-car lap, preferably in the dry? The Aussies' Peter Prock is not *our* Peter Brock (of Cobra Daytona Coupe fame), who used to be plain ol' "Pete" Brock until recently. The Down-Under Brock is known to American TV audiences for his soft-spoken pitches for Mobil 1 oil back when SpeedTV was Speedvision. Jason, If they can transmogrify NASCAR's lumpen sedans into Craftsmen Trucks, they can make them into Aussie Supercars, but I'm not so sure abt. CART or 1977 F1s (the alleged timeframe for GPL 2). I could be wrong. I'll take anything, including the Featherlite-series Sportsman Modifieds (which I've seen @ Watkins Glen; they were faster than the Cup cars), as long as its on road circuits. I'll take the Featherlite mods, but you *have* to have the ovals for them! :) Racing the mods on nothing but road courses is like having cybersex, it beats nothing, but it's still not the real thing. It's a great series. Powerful cars, lightweight, low CG, wide wheelbase and wide tires. Little wonder they can outperform WC cars... Yup. I've never driven a real one, only a virtual one in a sim. At first, I was pretty hestitant about driving 'em. But any doubt I had quickly vanished when I realized how fast and stable those cars can be (thanks to the tires and wheelbase) unless you just plain abuse 'em. I found myself really worrying less about tire wear and more on racing (I still want to try the Aggressive AI option) and fuel management. :) I couldn't imagine racing those cars on anything but ovals. If you get a chance, rent Dirt to Daytona and do a race at Richmond and a few other ovals. It's a riot! Just a damn shame we didn't get to race 'em on dirt. -Will
Dave, What is that top one? A Mazda? And the one on the bottom shouldn't take too much work: Papy gave us 1960s-1970s stock cars in NASCAR Legends, complete with wood-applique (burled pine, from the look of it) dashboards. The prob for anything more recent is, of course, aero. I have no idea whether, how, or to what extent wings, tunnels, diffusers, etc. are--or might be--modeled in any Papy physics engine since--Gott bewahr uns!--IndyCar Racing. No, you guys are flat-out WRONG! The *idea* of them on road courses is almost unthinkable, but the reality is that they went like stink at the Glen...and looked right at home (if butt ugly) doing it. I got the impression that they were oversized Formula Vs, with monster motors and earth-mover tires. They stayed planted four-square on the line while leaving streaks at the exit of every corner. They were even stable under braking. They sound was hellacious. And best of all, you could look thru all the tubing and see the drivers at work. Lemme tell you, they were BUSY! This is from a 3 tape set called "History of Bathurst" or something like that, which covers every race up until 98 or something like that, so there's not much coverage from each race, and not all of it is that good either compared to what you'd expect today, but as a history lesson it's quite enjoyable, especially those early races when they raced Lotus Cortinas, Mini's and you name it, and the bigger cars didn't stand a chance and the saying was that the V8 cars where too big for Bathurst, you needed a small and nimble car :-) Oh how the times have changed :-), I especially remember one scene in there where, if memory serves me right, there's a Studebaker coming in for a pit stop, and at this particular stop they refuel, remove the wheels, inspect the brakes and then put the same wheels back on.....:-) In short, the rest of that race coverage is pretty boring, but I may be able to locate a complete on board lap > And do you have an in-car lap, preferably in the dry? Oh, they could run the roadies, but that's not what they're built for. Oval racing is my passion. There's a few roadies that I like, Long Beach, Cleveland, Laguna Seca (awesome corkscrew - I doubt the F1 crowd would ever consider attempting that!). Mosport is interesting, though. But I find that most road series tend to be parade type racing. It seems to me if you want to eliminate the inordinate amount of blocking, you'd have to widen most courses to the point that blocking becomes impractical - staving off one guy means that another will pass the both of you. Cleveland excells at making blocking irrelevant. In fendered series, there's a time honored way of preventing such tactics. :) Pretty much sums up my feelings about road courses. I feel the same way about 'single line ovals' as well. Mike On Sat, 07 Jun 2003 11:23:45 GMT, "Steve Smith" <[email hidden]> wrote:

Goy, I'm unaware as to your knowledge of the history of this race so please forgive me if I appear patronising. It wasn't that the V8's were "too big for Bathurst".....it was that the V8's back then, what there were, didn't have disc brakes and, although they powered UP the hill, they didn't fare too well coming DOWN! So it was that the Minis and Lotus Cortinas did well. This was in the period when the racing was for stock, off-the-showroom-floor cars, of course, with the only changes allowed essentially being the blueprinting of the engines. This was also just before the onset of competition between Ford (Falcon GT), GM-H (Monaro) and Chrysler (Charger), i.e., about 1966. Ford introduced its GT in the 1967 race, from memory. The Studebaker's to which you refer were more often than not entered by the Victorian Police - they used them for pursuit vehicles. As I mentioned above, they went like stink for a while until they just ran out of brakes, whilst the less powerful cars, although also running on drums, didn't destroy brake linings and drums as quickly. The years 1966 (the year the Mini Coopers won) through to around 1980 or there-abouts were the best years, in my opinion. Our equivalent of your wonderful Trans-Am series, in effect. This is the period which I would love to see simulated - using the original (GPL) version of Mt. Panorama and a mixed array of cars, including the Big Three plus Alfa Romeo, British Leyland, Jaguar et al. In '83 the "Class" system was dropped, the "Group" system introduced and it went downhill from there to the point where we now just have racing between two manufacturers for cars which bear no resemblance to those driven on the street - a far cry from its origins. Hmmmph, do you think one gets nominated honorary Aussie around here without having at least *some* knowledge about the history of the great race ? :-) I love those tapes, and I love the changes that happened over the years, there's an interview there with Peter Brock where he talks about the first time he raced a V8 there and was told not to use the brakes for slowing down, he was to scrub off speed by sliding the car into the corners.....and that bit about them putting the same set of tyres back on after a brake service is just totally weird in comparison to what would happen during a pit stop today I too hope there will be some historic mods coming out of all this, well, I know there is at least one as Jan has already spilled the beans on that one so I'm not revealing any great secrets there, but a historic touring car sim from the 60's and a sports car sim from the 50's and 60's would be very high on my list....right after the AussieV8 !!! mod is done of course :-) > Ahhh - memories! :) I'm sure....did you actually attend the very first Bathurst Bruce ? Nope....the very first Bathurst race was back in the 1930's, I think. I'm not THAT old, even if some people here believed (back in 1998) that I was in my eighties! :) (I'm actually 57 - which is pretty close to 80, I must admit). My one and only visit to a Bathurst race was the year (1966, I think ... or '65. I can't remember exactly) that the Mini Coopers finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th. Total obliteration of the Ford Cortinas - and all else - by the British Motor Corporation and the last time that the outright winner was a 4-cylinder car. It is in the Motor Racing Museum at Mt. Panorama and I was able to actually touch it a couple of weekends back! :) Regards, Bruce. As DH sez: nee NASCAR Heat. Quite user friendly (as the cliche would have it), but the physics sucks and the multiplayer don't hunt. Not bad, tho, as an entry-level racing game. "Mike Donnelly Jr" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

Have you watched your hands after that or do you just wear gloves so you don't wear off the historic dirt ? :-) 57....then you were over 50 when you took the BR1000 crown a couple of years ago, not bad :-), hope you'll be joining us online this autumn Bruce Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy "goyl at nettx dot no" http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--
Yes, sadly, I have had a shower since then, Goy! :) With regard to BR2003, you never know. I'm tip-toeing into the on-line waters at the moment, having tried a couple of casual NASCAR2003 races over the weekend, just to see how things go. Kept out of the way of the professionals, which was my aim. I'm also contemplating joining RASCAR - I think that the schedule will fit in too. Regards, Bruce. Console but not on the PC? Shoot. Looks like I won't be able to run it. :( Thanks for the info. Mike
OTOH, there will be a whole new NASCAR Thunder (not just a make-over) from ISI, the guys who brought you F1 2003, F1 2002, F1 2000, and F1 1999 (which are themselves being spruced up & re-released as an anthology: F1 Challenge for the PC and F1 Career Challenge for consoles) soon. Not bad, tho, as > an entry-level racing game. That's a pretty harsh statement to make about the physics. IMO, I thought it was quite good in the physics department, being a console title. It was a hell of a lot better than NT2003 by miles. Did you bother turning on the hardcore physics option? If you ever got up to the Cup cars, the game really shined. The only downside was not having enough real world drivers being in it. -Will
