RASCAR Daytona crash involving a newcomer
After RASCAR's Daytona make-up race, new driver Sean McFadden blamed others for a pile-up while lapped cars were being passed. Larry and Jan Verschueren said he had failed to hold a predictable line or slow for an earlier wreck, and Sean accepted some of the blame. Others put it down to unfamiliarity with racing together.

After today's race, I could make a truly wise-ass comment here, but I'll let
it pass :)

Look at the replay, I am not at fault here. The pack split in two and was
passing high and low. Not only that but the 98 car passed on the apron
which is against the rules at Daytona, this caused me to react to the
outside and I was slammed in the ass by the 115 car. Do you guys have any
brakes in your car or do you figure you don't have to brake since you are
faster?

McWhom,
I WAS the 98 car so I had a front row seat to this whole thing. Thank
goodness.
I saw what you were doing long before we got there. A HALF STRAIGHT before
we got to you, I warned you that we were coming and passing low. You had a
good 5 seconds to get in line with the rest of the Lap cars, but you did not
do it.
You insisted on running with other lap cars 2 wide. The ENTIRE lead pack of
cars was coming up on you at a closure rate of 20-30 knots.
Now, WHY exactly do you think I dove down to the infield when we got there?
Because you did not pay attention to what was going on and get out of the
way. You had the whole track blocked up with a steaming mass of cars headed
right for you.
Being a lap down and continuing to race brings a great deal of
responsibility with it, at least in this group it does.
This incident took out all but 3 cars on the lead lap. We only survived
because we dove low to avoid you. Please learn from it for the next one,
that's all I think we ask of you.

When Larry went low I knew I was almost past and moved up as I looked into
the rearview. It was too late and Joon (?) hit me as he was going to pass me
high. Sorry folks, I practiced quite a bit in traffic but did not
encounter that........
I had thought I was doing well.

P.S. Forgive me for overthinking this but in my own defense this was not

Don't be throwing stones, #12, you're the one that blindly drove into a
wreck at 183mph earlier (lap 29 or something) eventhough you had half of the
backstretch to react to it. I might have escaped that one with minimal
damage (nearly got it stopped, but tangled with a purple car) but for your
actions. Ok, warp involved, but if there's an incident on the speedway you
slow down, end of story.
I will agree with you it's up to the lead car to get himself around lap
traffic and to accept courtesy when it's offered rather than commanding it
and dictating the way in which it should be offered. While most of the time
it's convenient to know the leader's intentions, there are other times when
it's not possible to accommodate the leader in the way he's got in mind.
This can lead to awkward and dangerous situations, but in each case it's up
to the following driver(s) to avoid trouble as best he (they) can.
Jan.

I did watch that wreck the whole way down the backstretch, lots of smoke,
cars everywhere, but it was a long way ahead of me. I held my line and kept
going, not much choice and the wreck should have been over by the time I got
there. I did not hit you, I went under you and the 69 (purple) car, the
rest of the wrecked cars were in the infield by that time. My car never
shuddered or changed it's line indicating that I hit anything throughout
that wreck. I do have the replay up to the point that I retired and I have
watched it several times already. I do not want to cause wrecks, nor do I
want to be seen as unaware of the race around me. I am a rookie however and
I did misjudge the closing rate of the lead group when I was run into. I am
sorry for that. As for the rest of the race I don't feel I was a hazard on
the track or that my actions/reactions were at fault. I did as well as I
could and allowed faster cars to pass me on several occasions as well as
navigating my own way through traffic.
I was/am a little miffed at being accused of causing two accidents today. I
would like to continue racing with this group though I am sure I will make
other rookie mistakes.
I do appreciate what you said about the leader, Had I realized just how
fast the closing rate was I would have tried to move up behind the 31 car.

Pardon the sarcasm, but: of course, we should have stopped banging into
eachother and cleared the track by the time you got there. How very
untoughtfull of us.
No, if an incident happens ahead you slow enough to not become part of it
and then you, gingerly, pick your way through the wreckage. Keeping one's
foot in it and aiming for a gap is an option reserved to those who can still
see through and beyond the incident.
> I did not hit you, I went under you and the 69 (purple) car,
> the rest of the wrecked cars were in the infield by that time.

I know it won't have appeared to you as though you hit me... through the
effects of latency game reality varies from client to client, which in turn
is different than what will be apparent on the server. Your car is indeed
completely unaffected by the hit in my replay, but, sadly, the effect of the
collision on my car was permanent.
That's another reason why you shouldn't blat through wrecks... you can
"kill" other drivers without noticing it.
That said, having looked at it again, frame by frame, what seemed like
"almost stopped" was still 55mph. That still made for a sizeable impact with
Pete Reston and I wouldn't have gotten off free anyhow. That comment was a
bit rash, I'm sorry.
Not any more so than some of the others that have run with RASCAR or even
myself at times, but for one to get better mistakes have to be pointed out.
> I did as well as I could and allowed faster cars to pass
> me on several occasions as well as navigating my own way

I'm sure you did, e.g., the situation right before things went wrong in the
lead draft wasn't your fault at all. Eldred, Dave and John where clumsy
passing you, never mind the fact they neglected to draft me up past you as
well... thanks a bunch guys. I think Eldred twigged it in the end and tried
to help me, but we were still side by side as we were caught by the lead
draft which went down the middle. Nearly drifted up into to the #31 there,
but gathered it up in time.
There's just not enough of us to do this SS racing properly... there's not
enough cars in the way to kerb some people's obsession with passing cars
even if, in their situation, it's the worst tactical move they can make.
Stick with it, use your nugget and you'll get some decent finishes out of
this stuff.

Everybody makes mistakes and will continue to do so with a varying degree of
consequences. This is accepted, as long as we get to rant about it. ;-)
I responded in this case as you called the kettle black, IMO.

Getting "Boyked" is a good thing, no? I haven't had a chance to see
the replay, however, from my viewpoint, Sean did exactly as he
said....he misjudged how slow Pete and I were going, and how fast the
freight train was coming. He went low under me, but failed to get up
along the wall after he passed. I cringed when I saw it, and yes, most
of us got "boyked" <now reflecting on all the things I have been
called growing up with a name like that> Anyhow, if none of you have
ever tried it, completing 100 laps at Daytona, where the last 60 of it
you are averaging 160mph can be pretty lonely. (Where did you go,
Pete? We had an awesome draft of nearly 165 going) I finished the race
9 laps down, managed to keep up near the wall and let the leaders go
by without trouble. Hey, wait a minute....I finished a race. I'm going
to DisneyWorld! No, really folks, looks like I won't make it next
weekend....gotta take the kids up to Disney for the weekend. Sean, you
think this thread is bad, just think of what it would have been like
if you would have taken out Larry :o
He's the Dale jr of RASCAR!
Sorry, had to leave but my motor gave up the ghost. Those big
speeds killed it. :-)

I can't speak for Dave and John, but from my point of view, it was a lack of
familiarity racing with Sean. I wasn't sure WHERE he was going to go. Maybe
the others felt the same way. I think *that's* what caused everyone to jam up
in the same area of track.

English "old boy" -speak for "realised" or "got"

Simple, he was going to go low whether he liked to or not. He's on is own,
we caught him as he was about to cut down into the corner. You continue on
the high line and by mid-corner there's a wall of cars, moving 5mph faster
than he is, on his outside and the decision is made for him.
Eldred, you know I like you as a person, rate you highly as a driver and
appreciate what you do for the community, but you can be awkward at times...
you're too concerned about misjudging things or making mistakes and it's
slowing you down.
_No doubt_ Eldred... you're a good racer, you just need to work on the
singlemindedness part.

I'd say your hesitation now causing both lines to be blocked had something
to do with it. <g>

Hmm...that's not good. I'll have to look at the replay, because I don't
remember being in the lead of that pack. In other words, *I* didn't make that
decision... I *think* I checked up to avoid hitting DGF or John, and my
evasive action put me on the inside, right behind Sean.
