Will this PC be fast enough to run as a dedicated server with 20->25
racers on a solid cable connection with the following specs:
Celeron 1.4 GHz 256K cache (BX chipset)
512 MB SDRAM CL2
Geforce 2 GTS 32MB
30 GB 7200 RPM 2MB cache
Promise Ultra ATA 100 Controller
SBLive 5.1
Thanks in advance
The PC will make a super server the problem may be your cable connection.
Each person connected to your server will use 21k of bandwidth, so to host
10 racers would
require 210k of upload bandwidth or 420k of upload for 20 racers. If your
cable connection is
capped at 256k upstream you would be limited to about 12 solid racers.

5-6 connections for some reason. Only way to know for sure is to test it
and see what it can handle. You will start getting high pings and packet
loss when you hit the limit.

Check your upstream speed. I'm willing to bet that you're capped at
128k. That will allow only about 5 or 6 cars.
I'm willing to bet I'm not. Checked it. Not sure what the issue is unless
it's an issue with my router perhaps but my upstream is actually capped at
1MB but I normally get slightly less in real world use.

The computer isn't a problem. Your cable connection probably is.
I believe the rule-of-thumb is 22K per car.
I doubt your cable system is symetrical, and that the uplink speed is
limited to something like 192k or 256k. THERE is your issue.

I have a friend in a sleeply little town that just got wireless broadband.
The first of any sort of broadband in the whole town. Get this, his
connection speeds are in excess of 4mbit/sec download and 2mbit/sec upload.
All for $50 a month.

If you cannot maintain a constant upload speed then it will be an issue for
hosting. Cable can be very "bursty".

Download not an issue getting nearly 2MB
Upload looks like its capped at 475K (maxed at 472K on 5 out of 8
test).
With an average of 22K per car, barely skimp buy hosting 20 cars.
Realistically I think its about 15. Oh well, there is a local ADSL
offering 2.5 GB down and 640K up but they have a cap on
download/upload per month. Hopefully my cable company will offer a
"enhanced" cable connection soon.
The problem with cable is your impacted more by local users on your node.
If a few people start some big downloads you will see a
performance/bandwidth hit. This is less likely with DSL but it seems most
DSL caps the upload levels lower than cable typically.
You may want to look at renting a server if your trying to get some regular
racing events going, much more consistent and stable way to go IMHO.

KeeeRAP! my fast cable is 1.5Kbs down..and capped on upload. It was
128kbs but I think they relaxed that some to about 225ish.
dave henrie
That's one hell of a Cable connection there :)

The DSL companies used to use this 'shared bandwidth of cable' as a selling
point of DSL, but it faded out after a while when it was determined that it
wasn't that big of a deal.
EVERYONE shares somewhere. Whether it's at the Gateway, backbone, segment,
etc... There's no escaping it, no matter what kind of connection you have.
