RASCAR: How 'bout we all chip in an buy Eldred a new Videocard?

RAS members fund a new video card for Eldred

Ed Solheim proposed that RASCAR regulars pool money so EldredP, who hosted league servers, could replace his Voodoo5 and race NR2003. Many pledged money through PayPal or by cheque while John Simmons had already paid for his copy of the game, and members debated whether a Ti4600, a Radeon 9500 or a CPU upgrade made more sense. About $115 had been raised within a few days.

Guys, St. Eldred needs our help! How about we all chip in and buy our good samaritan (sp?) a new graphics card so he can join us in RASCAR this season? Eldred is stuck with some acient V5 card so he clearly could need an upgrade for NR2003. The card I have in mind is a Shappire Radeon 9500 with 64 or better yet - 128mb of memory. Why this particulare card? Well the Radeon 9500 can very easyli be modded (using software) to convert it into a Radeon 9700 card! The 9500 (*non* pro) rage of Radeon card are mostly based on the 9700 core.. it's just not using all 8 pipelines... and with the software modification you can open the last 4 pipelines, making it essentially into a fullygrown Radeon 9700 card :-) A card like this cost around $200 *over here* - so it's not too expensive (9700 Pro runs at around $500 up here - the 9700 slightly less..) We could set up a account for Eldred using PAYPAL to do the transfere securely.. I'll start the pot by donating $20 for the card.. Anyone care to follow up on that? -- ed_ ---------------------------------------------- $10 says Petter Solberg wins the 2003 WRC.

Well, I'm gonna say I did my part by sending Eldred money for the game itself (the check really is in the mail Eldred, so go out and buy the game now, and you can be sure you will be reimbursed in the next couple of days). :)

You most certainly did John. Great work - Sir! I'm working on setting up a donation account for Eldred so he can get a new graphics card too.. As far as I can tell we got over $100 "donated" now - so things are looking good :o)

What he gets should a) be up to him, and b) dependant on his mboard/cpu. If he's got anything less than a 1.6ghz machine, the radeon won't do much for him. He'd be better off with a Ti4400, or better, a Ti4600.

Just to follow up on this... I did a quick search on Pricewatch and it seems to me that a Ti4400 start at close to $190, while a Ti4600 cost about $210+ A Radeon 9500 128mb card starts at around $160 while the new Radeon 9100 128mb card cost around $85.. Keep those donations coming! Account details and such to follow as soon as I've worked this out with Eldred.

Most definitely. *However*, they are pricier than the 9500's, but not by much (only $10 when comparing price between reatil Radeon and Asus Ti4600). There's no need to get an AGP8x card if your motherboard doesn't support it, so that'll save you some bucks (again not much). Expect to pay about $200 if you get either card. How much money is in your card fund so far?

It will work, but sorta overkill. A TI 4200 128 would do just as good as job with your processor. "EldredP" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]... > In article <[email hidden]>, JohnSimmons

First of all, I am sorry for the delay with setting this thing up - we had a little water-problem at our workshop and I had to take care of a leaking roof first :o) Anyway... here goes; Those who want to help out and donate some money to Eldred - please head over to RASCAR's new home on the web at http://rascar.racesimcentral.com and follow the instructions. An update on the proceedings are sure to follow shortly... Now, if you excuse me - I have some money to be sent :o) Best regards, Ed Solheim
Tom's hardware got a decent VGA-chat that consider both fast and slow PC's.... Charts show preformance on both a Athlon 1000 mhz setup aswell as a Athlon XP 2700+ setup. This should give you a good idea on what to get IMO. http://www6.tomshardware.com/graphic/20030120/index.html -- ed_ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- $10 says Petter Solberg wins the 2003 WRC.

Eldred, you may even consider a mobo/cpu upgrade instead of a vid upgrade at the moment. I was just a Fry's and saw a combo XP2000 cpu ECS mobo for $89. I know not the best mobo but it does support both sdr and ddr so you can re-use existing memory. Use that and the GF2 in the meantime may give a greater bang for the buck at the moment than a 4600 with your athlon 1.2. CPU rules.. In a few months we can have another E drive and then get a video card to go with the mobo/cpu upgrade and you'll be set... Just throwing out ideas. He's currently using a VERY outdated (and unsupported) video card. I figured since he's got an amd 1.2, he'd be better off with a video card that is a known performer.
GF2 isn't that outdated. It will work ok with N6 and a good CPU. The Voodoo5 on the other hand is ancient ;) ... The 4600 will work fine in his rig, just thinkin a little farther down the road is all.
