RASCAR asks registrants to commit to racing regularly

John Simmons asked drivers to register only if they would race regularly, since 91 had registered last season but few showed up. Tony Rickard objected that this made RASCAR exclusive rather than an open newsgroup event, while others supported the rule. The thread drifted into British comedy.

If you're not reasonably certain that you're going to race more often than just a race or two, you should reconsider registering. Like the web page says, we're racing like this because we want to race with people that we know (and trust) are maintaining their driving skill. I'm not trying to be a prick, I just don't want people to reserve a car number (especially a popular one) and rarely (if ever) race. We had a bunch (actually, it was a SHITLOAD) of people do that last season, and one of the most annoying thing I can think of is people that won't stick to a committment, even one as minor and insignificant as this, especially when it requires me to spend time on something.
You can remove me if you like John. I was under the impression this wa supposed to be a more relaxed league and I'm sure not everyone can make a commitment to race religiously on saturday afternoons. If not I will try to make the races when I can. I wouldn't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable. (-: "John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

That was entirely directed at people that raced 3 or fewer races last season Mike (and your driving skill is not in question). I ain't takin you off the list, and you *will* race, or by god I'll send RedTed your way to hand out some abuse. :) In article <_GeW9.13288$[email hidden]>, mgrandy2 @nycap.rr.com says...

I thought the only way to race on Rascar (the closest thing to the newsgroup club night) was to register a number. Didn't realise we were getting married to it. Never really understood this hang up with numbers - the game caters for hundreds. If Rascar really represents RAS should we expect it to be another league where the same people race every week? The more casual or newer drivers might just pick the tracks they feel comfortable and experienced with, and have the opportunity to race with some more sensible folk than the standard pick up races, and hopefully learn something. Just my two cents. Tony

I race when I can, but when I race, I want to be in the car I want to be in. I applaud John for not allowing guys to reserve a car number only to show up just once or twice a year. -- Tim White www.intracmotorsports.com "Tony Rickard" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:sahW9.708$[email hidden]... I won't grab a number, since I'm hardly ever at home Saturdays at noon. Given that, if I am around and there's open space in a race on a given day, will it be possible to join without being on the roster, perhaps as a no-points entry or such? Because I'm already enough of a paint nazi. I wouldn't dare suggest that everyoine be assigned th next available number on top of that. Besides, most of these guys are using paint schemes that were done by other painters, and the painters won't let go of their layered files to be changed, or won't change the number (on the other hand, *I* make all of my layered files available to whoever wants them.).

You have to be in the invite file. To be in the invite file, you have to be on the roster (to guarantee your car number, and so that you don't use someone else's). It'll be a real shame if you can't join Steve. You're one of the better drivers I've raced against.

Thanks for the explanation - makes sense. Having such personal cars seems a bit poncey to use old GPLers :) Cheers Tony

I'm not saying that we're "elite". But if you remember some of the RASCAR races with 20+ cautions, you can probably understand why I want to race with people that are also interested in a good race, and that are committed enough to put some practice time in before showing up for a race. The reason we set RASCAR up was so that we'd have a place to race without having to deal with wreckers and idiots that dominate the pickup races on Sierra, but at the same time, didn't have to worry about standings or points. IMHO, it's only right to expect that EVERYONE be ready for every race, and that if they're on the roster, they should be expected to make every attempt to attend the majority of races. If someone takes a number and then just doesn't show up, they could be preventing someone else from joining that wants to use that number, and who would show up every week, but they won't join because they want to use the car they've been using elsewhere. I think it's just plain rude to ask for a spot on the roster, only to have the time Eldred and I spend on allowing that person to race be reduced to a complete waste.

Ah! The Tooting Popular Front probably isn't as global as the People's Front of Judea (or even the Judean People's Front - Splitters!) Citizen Smith was a popular late 70's British sitcom starring Robert Lindsay (Wolfie Smith) leading a revolution in Tooting (London) with his following of six members of the Tooting Poular Front. The show started with Wolfie shouting Power to the People. He wore a T-Shirt emblazoned Freedom for Tooting... ...here ends today's Britsh TV history lesson. Tony

For me the commitment wasn't to race every Saturday night, but to be sure when I did race I didn't spoil it for anybody. I understand what you are saying, but if someone has practised on a few tracks they may choose not to race on new ones. Similarly the time may not be convenient for many, but when they can race they want to join in and put the effort in to practice and be safe. > If someone takes a number and then just doesn't show up, they could > be preventing someone else from joining that wants to use that > number, and who would show up every week, but they won't join because > they want to use the car they've been using elsewhere. Maybe a range of numbers for guests to use the standard Sierra paintjobs for those who cannot commit to the majority of races. They would still have to go on the invite list - so that wreckers can be kept off, but limit the effort required for the roster. Cheers Tony

Ah, but I ordered the complete "Jeeves and Wooster" series from Amazon as an X-mas pressie for myself, along with the complete Black Adder, Black Adder's Christmas Carrol and Black Adder goes back and forth.....would you believe my DVD player gave up the ghost before I had a chance to watch a single one of them Can't afford to replace it just now, hollidays took a big chunk of my spending money, as did the R9700 PRO :-), still, they're not going anywhere, so yes, I love British TV-comedy.... Men behaving badly (classic), Darling buds of May, Only fools and horses, Yes minister, MPFC (given), Not the nine o'clock news, anything with Billy Conelly.....you get the pic :-) Beers and cheers (uncle) Goy http://www.theuspits.com "A man is only as old as the woman he feels........" --Groucho Marx--

Aha - thanks, John. I'll wait until nearer race time and if there are still plenty of open slots I'll reserve an orphaned number then. But I'd say my chance of racing at noon on Saturdays is slim, so I wouldn't want to preclude anyone. I hope I can join you guys for some, though. > It'll be a real shame if you can't join Steve. Just about all the television I watch now is British television. I've been watching british comedies (starting with Monty Python when I was a kid, followed by The Young Ones in the early 80's ) and dramas for years on the three local PBS stations and A & E that broadcast here in Southern NJ outside of Philadelphia, but a couple of years ago I started receiving BBC America and now I barely watch any American television shows it seems. They just seem dreadful in comparison. Finally get to see The Office starting next week. One good thing has come from all of this. Thanks to Father Ted, I've stopped saying "f*ck" and now say "feck" instead. :-) It's coming on now, gotta go. David G Fisher

I just said to someone a couple of days ago that I wanted to get the entire Jeeves and Wooster series on DVD. Hugh Laurie is tremendous. I 've planned on getting the Black Adder series too. Just watched an episode earlier tonight. One of my all time favorites.

Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister are excellent. In the mid 90's I saw The Darling Buds of May for the first time. When I saw Catherine Zeta-Jones I immediately thought that it was ridiculous that she wasn't a huge movie star, especially compared to so many that were at the time (Julia Roberts?). A few years later The Mask of Zorro was released, and I realized I missed my chance to make some easy money as an agent. :-) David G Fisher

Agreed, I think one of the reasons I like "Black Adder goes forth" so much is the more prominent roles that Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry has, they add a new dimension to it > Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister are excellent. Actually, until Feb 01, people have to check BOTH rosters. If the number says "Available" on both rosters, they can pick it.

I don't think I want to maintain a list of "if this number becomes available".

Well, at first I thought it would be only fair to allow old RASCAR members first crack at getting their original numbers back. Maybe Feb 01 is too long to wait...

You are doing a fine job, John. You just have more patience than me! The head exploding bit was just a reference to your earlier head exploding post BTW :) Cheers Tony
Well I am one of those people who got a number, and uploaded a car file, but then only made it to 2, maybe 3 races. Obviously I am not going to request a number for this season, more from an understanding that my system will not be ready for NR2K3 for awhile and an almost complete lack of time for anything. I think it is a good idea to make this series a bit more controlled, as far as who races. The races I did make last time had about the same number of cautions as a pick-up race on a Papy server. (I am sure I helped with that as well....) So the desire to make this thing less open, and more regimented is most likely a good idea. It should make for better races. I'm honestly not trying to regiment it any more than it was before, or even close access to anyone. I just want people that register to participate more. We had 91 registered drivers at the end of the last "season", and only a small fraction were showing up for races. We had more than 20 drivers in a given race only six times out of more than 40 events. We had at least 20 only three more times. Granted, for the first couple of months of the season, we ran two races every saturday, and not many people coud commit to that much time. When you add it all up, only a dozen or so people consistently showed up. That's a pretty crappy overall turnout if you ask me.
Are we back on a regular schedule now? If we are, I'll start paying more attention now that the Holiday Season is over :) I wanna race the car! Larry "John Simmons" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...
