DirectX 9 released: install or wait?

Txl announced the release of DirectX 9. Some installed it without problems in GPL, NR2002 and F1 2002, while others advised waiting because it could not easily be uninstalled and offered little without DX9 hardware and games. Complaints about DirectX 8.2 arriving unannounced with Combat Flight Simulator 3 resurfaced, and a third-party uninstaller was mentioned.

New DirectX versions are not always a good thing :) I usually don't mind being a Guinea Pig, but since you can't uninstall this thing, I'll sit back and watch the show for a while. -Larry "Txl" <txl AT free.fr> wrote in message news:3e034e36$0$1524$[email hidden]...

well, you're supposed to be able to "tweak" your steering wheel with MUCH more "power" and therefore improve the SHITTY controller issues in F12001 and the LESS SHITTY in F12002.... "Haqsau" <[email hidden]> wrote... > I would assume you don't need it until you have both a DX9 card and a DX9game.< Probably true, but being the danger-seeker that I am, I installed it anyway. ;-) FWIW, it works fine here on 98SE with a Ti4400 and LWF wheel in GPL, NR2002, F1-2002 (& assorted mods), and Rally Trophy. Testing actually gave rise to my first GPL race in many, many moons, so it WAS worth the effort. Got my arse kicked on VROC, but it was fun chasing around the 'Ring again. Still can't drive those bloody 60/60 setups in the Lotus though... SB

Likewise, I'd avoid DX 8.2 as well (it comes--unbidden--with some games like MS's CFS3). Compatability issues. The thing is, if it comes with a game, the game probably requires it for some new feature that it is using, so you may not have a choice. Yeah, 8.2 came with CFS3, but after I installed it, several other games *stopped* working. If I had known how bad CFS3 was/is, I never would have bothered. I guess what pisses me off the most is that CFS installed it w/o even telling the FDU (that's me) that it was installing 8.2, not 8.1a or b...not that I knew to avoid 8.2 then (I only found out what a loser it is afterwards, reading the newsgroups...which--I know, I know--I shoulda done *beforehand*!). OTOH, DX9 is going to be a must-have for almost any game released from now on. I already have a voluminous collection of 9-only demos. I gave it a go on Win2k, with a Gf4 4200 (128Mb), SB live 5.1 & VIA 686B chipset mobo. Gpl works just fine (OpenGL), no the sound issue is not fixed, I tried putting the acceleration up to full, then normal, neither worked properly, so it's back on low again same as before. I never had any noticeable crackling, so I can't really say whether that's improved or not. Viper Racing (D3D) works just as well as it did before too. No install problems, no incompatible drivers, although it shows my nVidia 41.09 drivers as not certified. I thought they were but so what at the end of the day. It's fine, but I can't find any significant changes except for the little midi tune dxdiag plays ;-) I wasn't really expecting any though, but at least it works! Malc.
Malc, I hope & trust yer referring ("it") to DX9 not the heinous DX8.2, rite? --Steve "Malc" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:%H8N9.5127$4k6.396397@wards...

No problem with uninstalling if you create a restore point in XP first. Agreed, Steve. My son brought home MechWarrior 3 today which he picked up in the bargain bin, and it conviniently offered to install DX 6.0 as the installed version (8.1) wasnt new enough. Yes, but everything else you 've done will also be erradicated if you use system restore. System Restore was never intended to be used as a standard software uninstaller. It suprises me not that Microsoft themselves are the first to require it to uninstall certain products. Sheesh... -Larry "Lee" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:lzoN9.64075$[email hidden]...
