This has been achieved by reducing the weight to a bare minimum whilst packaging the car with as many performance-enhancing options as possible. Although the car is supplied fully road legal, this unique model contains many track options. The stripped out interior with carbon fibre dashboard, Caterham four point race harness, Caterham composite race bucket seats and wind deflector in lieu of windscreen are fitted as standard. Standard equipment includes: Competition specification engine Carbon dashboard Caterham 6 speed gearbox Ventilated front discs with four pot calipers de Dion competition derived rear suspension Adjustable rear anti-roll bar Wide track and bespoke road tyres The complete package gives this car a total kerb weight of only 485 kgs, which is 65 kgs lighter than the standard Roadsport model. (R500 in standard form weighs in at 465 kgs). If you want to personalise your car, there is a list of options to add to your specifications and customers requiring the added practicality of windscreen and full weather equipment can of course specify these. The previous record time of 11.50 seconds had been set in 1999, in a MacLaren F1 LM car, specifically shod in bespoke race tyres. The 0-100-0 exercise, designed to separate the men from the boys when it comes to fast cars, was conducted a fortnight ago at Bruntingthorpe airfield. It was part of a series of tests conducted annually by the editorial team from Autocar Magazine. Test co-ordinator, Steve Sutcliffe commented: In our experience 0-100-0 is the defining test of what is and what isnt a genuinely rapid road car. Ideally your entrant will be light, very powerful, have great traction, a snappy gear change, well laid-out pedals and, most importantly of all maybe, a massive and friendly to use- set of stoppers. The Caterham R500 is the greatest expression of straight-line speed merged with awesome braking ability. Overall, the R500 finished third in the test, beaten only by two non-road going race-prepd cars the Jaguar R3 Formula 1 car and a 477bhp Gould Cosworth Hillclimb car. Amongst the considerable scalps claimed by the British sportscar maker were the Pagani C12 S (11.84 seconds), the Porsche 911 Turbo (13.02 seconds) and the Lamborghini Murcielago (13.90 seconds). Caterhams Managing Director, Simon Nearn, was delighted with the result: When we created the R500, we spared nothing in our determination to reduce weight and then packed all the performance into it we could. We designed it specifically to go fast and stop fast. I am not surprised we finished top of the pile! The complete test results are in the 25 September edition of Autocar. The Caterham Superlight R500 is priced at 36,200. Visit www.caterham.co.uk for further details.

The R500 has been around for ages. I remember it in evos' ePR tests back in early-mid 2001, which had a 0-100-0 test, along with TED (time exposed to danger - simulated lorry passing), slalom (where it got trounced by the Elise and it's superior handling), roundabout tests and lap times. It won, of course, as the only thing that beat it on anything was the Elise in handling tests, and even the Porsche 911 Turbo couldn't *quite* keep up (although it ran it close on most of the tests). Remember that the R500 has no ABS for 0-100-0 times, too. And you can build it yourself...

Check out this site for some very nice movies of an R500 at Spa, Donnington, etc.. There's even one movie comparing a lap at Spa of an R500 to Coulthard's F1 (the F1 won) hehe... Very, very nice movies. http://www.jackals-forge.com/lotus/stage_default.htm

Wow! Spent awhile at Caterhams website last night and a bit this morning. Maybe in 5 or 10 years, I too can get one of these. Not the 500, one of their lesser cars would be just fine with me... though I think I'd add a cover for the weather. That first image is my new wallpaper. Brian

<snip> Impressive stats, but I've always been more concerned about the look and style of the cars I drive. I'm not big on 'garage' cars, as such. For years i've been yearning over a 1982 Trans Am KITT conversion, but since last week (watching the Jame's Bond trailer) its the new Austin Martin. [Imagine Homer Simpson drooling over chocolate, tongue out the side of his mouth - that's me right now]
Austin ? AUSTIN ?? It's Aston ! Aren't all things British Austin? Austin Powers, Austin Healy, Auston Martin, British Austin Motor Cars, Austin Bentley's, M Austin G's, Tri Austin umphs, VAustinxahl's. dave henrie
The British are trying very hard indeed to lose all reference to anything called Austin, Leyland, BML or Rover. We nearly passed off Rover to BMW but the Germans wised up and gave it us back. It's currently under auction at about 25 pence ;) To see just how badly we're trying to forget the Allegro, just take a look here http://website.lineone.net/~austinallegro/gallery.htm <-- NOT A PRETTY SIGHT !! That _would_ make it handle like a pig ;-) Why not just use crappy tyres on all four corners if you want to learn car control? Malc.

Lacking sufficient thigh room, the geniuses at Porsche-VW made an eccentric wheel. Great for going straight ahead, but when things got exciting and you dialed in the lock, it wedged against your thighs. Dohhh! The 944 redesign of the interior was a welcome change. Stephen

I believe you can even get a day pass for as many laps as you like. The things to remember are: 1. There's all sorts on there from buses (tourists) to GT cars to bikes to Trevor in his knackered escort going for gold (probably the most dangerous!). 2. It's not a video game, people are killed on the circuit every year (normally bikers though). 3. There's no emergency services. If you fly off into the trees, it'll be a while before you're found. 4. Thrashing the t*ts off your car for a few laps could kill it, and you've still got to get home. (think brakes and clutch). 5. You're not insured, it's a race track. Having said this, I'll be there at some point next year!!! AndyC

On Tue, 12 Nov 2002 18:17:15 +0000 (UTC), "Alex 'pez' Porazinski" <[email hidden]> wrote: >'eggshells under the right foot' > >;) Hehe.. well, it's true. I raced a lot of SCCA in my earlier years, and among my rides was my Lotus Eleven Le Mans. My SCCA driving school lead instructor, at Road Atlanta, in about 1970 when I had the Lotus, was Peter Revson (F1/Indy/CanAm). 'Eggshell under the right foot' were the exact words he used in our instruction, and my Lotus's performance would be considered poor compared to the R500 Caterham. I had 130hp in an 800 lb car. The R500 is 230 hp in a 1000 lb car. To put that in perspective, if these cars were Corvettes weighing 3000 lbs, the horsepower required to achieve the same power/weight ratio would be 500+ horsepower and 700+ horsepower, repectively. These are very light, powerful cars, and they get a little .. frisky. The braking performance is incredible as well. As for the handling, well it's a Lotus .. Both my old Lotus and the R500 are front-engined, DeDion rear suspension cars. My Lotus had very skinny tires compared to the good tires on the Caterhams. Back in the day, the Lotus Super 7's (now Caterham) were so fast that even after rule changes that bumped them up to the top class of the Production racing category in Britain where they raced against far more powerful Porsche 911's, Cobras, production Ferraris, Jags, Corvettes, Astons etc., the RAC (Royal Automotive Club) finally BANNED the Super 7's from further participation in Production Car racing. They simply crushed any and all production car competition that was placed against them. It may still be that way in Europe, I don't know. They are Q-U-I-C-K. I would REALLY like to own an R500, even as old as I am now. DAMN!!!

Not sure what country you're in, but over here in Blighty they're legal, or can be made so with parts from Caterham if you've bought a track version. And have you seen the size of these things, couldn't scale it down much more let alone make it RC ;o) AndyC
