I'm just curious as to what every one sees as the future of CART (IRL).
My prognostications from the announcement this weekend would be 18 to 20 car
grids.
Rahl, Forsythe, Patrick, Fernandez, Newman-Haas and Walker in with two or
three car teams.
Team Green/Andretti will move to the IRL. (but not the drivers, except
Michael) because of Kool and Honda.
Gannasi will shift focus to the IRL because of Toyota, but I wouldn't be
surprised if he fields one car in CART to keep his hand in.
Mo Nunn, probably gone to IRL if around at all.
What I'm interested in is 2004. As I understand it that's when the tobacco
ban kicks in in America (North America?). It seems recently a lot of the
moves have been lead by big tobacco money either pulling for the IRL ie.KOOL
and Marlboro or pushing for CART and Canadian races/racers ie. Player's.
What's going to happen after 2004 with no more tobacco money, how's that
going to shake everything out?
Think you might see Players back in the traditional blue cars, but with
somebody else's name on the car. Everybody will know who it is. Then they
can split the cost with another sponsor.
Just my guess, but what do I know. :>

You grouped CART and IRL together. Probably not a good idea.
CART would probably do better if Pampers was a major series sponsor, though.

Does anyone find it odd that the Son of Satan, who owns the Indy track,
has suceeded in pulling big time racing teams away from the CART league
because of pressure from Cancer Producers?
Call me old fashion, but I remmeber a time when the sponsors were
Valvoline or STP or other AUTO releated items. Now to race competively, you
must get in bed with death merchants.

similar problem over here in Europe with F1 - its a sad story, but
nothing than can be done bout it I am afraid
I am sure, some people will want to create the illusion that autosport
without Cancer products is impossible
if Cancer products can be sponsors, I don't see ANY product not being a
sponsor (condoms would be funny though)
let's look at this as a crisis (although a manipulated one), that will
have as outcome that Cancer products will no longer be aloud, and the
sport itself will relive again .. it will take a couple of years though
"And just how many people are killed by automobiles each year? No one
makes people smoke." -> living your live without driving a car, is not
easy I guess, living without smoking is something than can be done
easily .. by some
"No one makes people smoke ?" -> certainly dont blame commercials, they
wouldnt have anything to do with this .. or do they ?

But, it wasn't only POLs (petroleum, oils & lubricants) on the sides of Indy
cars.
Remember Provimi Veal? Sugarripe Prune Juice? Central Excavating? Fike
Plumbing? Olsonite toilet seats?

Don't worry, the crybabies have a plan in the works for a new "social disease".
The World Health Organization just released a report that a "couch potatoe"
lifestyle causes more illness than smoking. Guess they'll be going after
television producers next. Maybe couch manufacturers too.

We've had tobacco advertising bans for a few years
in Australia (international motor sport events being
an exception eg gold coast indy and the AGP) and it
has not greatly affected the sizes of our local
competitions.
In most cases either oil companies, car manufacturers
or completely unrelated industries have picked up the
slack. The "lack of downturn" is evident in the fact
that we have to run 2 seperate V8 touring cars series
due to the shear numbers of entries. (and to give the
top guys a clear track).
I will admit, this is different to CART as the costs
are a bit lower (not as much as you think!) and car
manufacturers can get more out of it as it is their
cars which are being raced - Reynard don't make road
cars AFAIK so this wouldn't work. But I don't think
the end of tobacco sponsorship will kill motorsport
in the USA, it will just enact a shift like in the rest
of the world.
The real bummer is, you can't make an indycar from a
cig packet anymore... OMG it's the end of origami too!

OK letme stir the pot some more.
The Marlboro sponsors of Team Penske forced his move to the IRL.
Because US law limits the advertising of Cigarettes to just one series per
team. That is why in 2001 the Penske's were without Marlboro branding at
Indy. So rather than continue to advertise in CART they chose to Put all
their eggs in the Indianapolis 500 basket.
The same thing will happen with Andretti Kool Green this next year, the
KOOL brand MUST be seen on TV so it's Indy or bust. However, what happens
in two more years when the Smokes are banned outright? Will the tobacco
sponsored teams stay with the IRL or return to Cart?(obviously with new
sponsorship) Is the IRL victory a short-term one or longterm?

Durex used to sponsor a certain Formula One team, and the car became
