The reason the racing was so close in irl was the downforce exceeding the
horsepower. This keeps everybody in play and allows even cars without a
great setup to pull themselves forward.
The trouble with CART and it's small ovals is the Horsepower dominates the
downforce. When you get engines so strong with such a small df package you
have no choice but to stay on the fast line.
Here is the ONE area that I think CART could learn from the irl. If they
limited the HP at the 1 mile ovals and increased the DF, then the racing
could start to resemble the mid 80's again when Tracey and Andretti and Al
Jr & Emmo were dicing two and three wide for entire races. It was about
that time that the big three Engine packages stopped going for a status quo
power solutions and started seriously ramping up the HP. This made the
speeds at the Bullrings quite hazardous and CART reduced the DF package to
force the drivers to brake and back off in the turns. This however, created
the 1 line racing we have seen since. So for the 1 mile ovals...Bring back
VERY high Downforce and limit the HP so that drivers are not tempted to run
at speeds that are waaaaay to fast.
