Certainly a matter of opinion :)

The F1 season was over before it ever started.  Everyone knew 1/4 way
through who was going to win.

I couldn't enjoy CART because of all the stacked up pampers boxes in the
pits blocking the camera views.

Now, the IRL is a different story.  The IRL was EXCITING this hear.  Damned
fine racing, and more down-to-the-wire finishes than in any other series as
far as I'm concerned.

Great racing, just enough politices, a touch of driver revolt made IRL very
interesting to me this year.

The reason the racing was so close in irl was the downforce exceeding the
horsepower.  This keeps everybody in play and allows even cars without a
great setup to pull themselves forward.
The trouble with CART and it's small ovals is the Horsepower dominates the
downforce.  When you get engines so strong with such a small df package you
have no choice but to stay on the fast line.
Here is the ONE area that I think CART could learn from the irl.  If they
limited the HP at the 1 mile ovals and increased the DF, then the racing
could start to resemble the mid 80's again when Tracey and Andretti and Al
Jr & Emmo were dicing two and three wide for entire races.  It was about
that time that the big three Engine packages stopped  going for a status quo
power solutions and started seriously ramping up the HP.  This made the
speeds at the Bullrings quite hazardous and CART reduced the DF package to
force the drivers to brake and back off in the turns.  This however, created
the 1 line racing we have seen since.  So for the 1 mile ovals...Bring back
VERY high Downforce and limit the HP so that drivers are not tempted to run
at speeds that are waaaaay to fast.

Interesting POV & suggestion Dave. Would certainly be interesting to see the
result.

Personally I saw "Be gone with ovals" but that is just me and does not solve
the "close racing" issues.

Cheers,

That's because you probably haven't seen a flat oval race with several
different lines and cars passing inside & outside every lap.

(now do you want to see something REALLY wierd??)
I think Mo Nunn, Cart owner and former Zanardi engineer,  steals from
RAS.  Go back up and re-read what I just posted a day or so ago about
downforce and horsepower(in this thread)  now read this quote from CART.com

---------------
Nunn believes the key to creating better racing and more passing
opportunities is in reducing horsepower and therefore straightline speeds
while increasing downforce. That's CART's plan for next year with the new
Cosworth "spec" engine limited in boost and RPM to produce around 700-750
BHP and by going back to running higher downforce, road-course wings on
short ovals like Milwaukee.

"We've got to slow the cars down on the straightaways," Nunn said. "The car
has to stay on the straight for a longer period of time. They accelerate
from A to B too fast and that doesn't help overtaking. One way to do that is
to reduce horsepower; the other is more downforce, and I think they're doing
that for next year. We're going to run the same wings on short ovals as on
road courses and I think that will be a gain. I think we need 700 horsepower
and more downforce.

"They've got to spend more time on the straight. In that time, it gives a
guy a better opportunity to drag and go by. They're like ***y bullets
right now. We even lost the overtaking we used to have in Cleveland. Give
those babies more downforce and slow them down on the straightaways and
you'll start to have more overtaking again."

You have to admit though, the helmet camera is absolutely amazing. I
personally am not a big fan of the IRL. I mean, side by side racing is
fantastic, but the series as a whole doesn't interest me that much.
It's kinda like the BTCC, which is gradually recovering to the
greatness of 97-ish, and there is some great racing going on, but
until they get more teams involved, the interest won't be completely
there for me.

The Indy 500 was a complete farce as well. I personally think Tracy
did NOT win, so the result is okay with me, its just the way they
handled it. *** theorist or not, you have to admit that the way
it was handled couldn't have damaged CART much more than it did
(accidentally or not, depending on your point of view).

"Nick" <

   Here's a short blurb from the CART_Rock website...decidedly biased...but
the source is pure irl.
------------

He took the checkered flag at the speed of what appeared to be two miles
per hour, with Tracy and the rest of the field breathing down his neck.
Oddly enough, even an hour after the race's end, the IRL's timing system on
their website showed Paul Tracy as the winner. At least someone got it
right.

It's always fun arguing for the least popular viewpoint :-)
