A director to whom all others are judged.
He is to movies like Papy is to racing.

I get it...they are both dead.

At first I thought that the only one of his moves that I'd seen was A Clockwork
Orange. I just looked him up on imdb.com, and I've seen a few:
Full Metal Jacket
Spartacus
The Shining
A Clockwork Orange
Those movies were entertaining, but I like other directors better.

How can you say that when you haven't seen 2001: A Space Odessey?
Jan. ;-))

Is that the best movie of all time? No. By definition, that means that I'll
like another director better. Hell, I even like Frankenheimer better(Grand
Prix, Ronin, Reindeer Games).

*..guess i'm getting off topic here...oops*
The book is a must-read, altho I'd probably recommend seeing the movie
first since the underlying theme of the story is a bit more subtle in
the film (the book sort of thwaps you in the head with it, especially
towards the end).

True, but I must say I didn't understand the visual language at the end of
the film until I read the book.

Probably not, but I would rank it above the ones you have seen. Together
with Tarkovsky's Solaris it's my favourite s/f movie too.
Hmmm... wouldn't consider Grand Prix anything special in the
cinematographics stakes. Some innovative racing footage for it's day, but
nothing special in the way of composition/lighting/editing, IMNSHO.

Same thing, different motorsport. Both could have been a lot worse, though
(see also: Driven). <vbg>

So you haven't been to the movies at all in the last 3 decades?
No, those two just happen to be my favourites. I quite liked "Dune" and
"1984" too, BTW, and I do enjoy movies on levels other than it being one of
the artforms.
Trouble is, maybe, there's little "pure" science fiction movies beying made.
Sci-fi adventures, sci-fi thrillers and sci-fi horror(*) a plenty, but
fairly little of the, often slow-paced, social commentary/philosofical
stuff.

(*)PS.: endured the much hyped crock-o-shit called "Event Horizon" on BBC
last X-mas. My vote for worst movie ever.
