The keyword here is Kubrick :-)
A director to whom all others are judged.
He is to movies like Papy is to racing.

At first I thought that the only one of his moves that I'd seen was A Clockwork
Orange.  I just looked him up on imdb.com, and I've seen a few:
Full Metal Jacket
Spartacus
The Shining
A Clockwork Orange

Those movies were entertaining, but I like other directors better.

How can you say that when you haven't seen 2001: A Space Odessey?

Is that the best movie of all time?  No.  By definition, that means that I'll
like another director better.  Hell, I even like Frankenheimer better(Grand
Prix, Ronin, Reindeer Games).

I don't think there has ever been another director who delved into the
psyche more deeply than Kubrick.
This guy was so far ahead of everyone else that he still impresses us with
2001 today. (made in 1968)
No phony rocket ship blasts in space...yet the silence was deafening.
Oh, and that AI?
I'm sure Stanley had a much darker image in mind than a teddybear (no
offence Steven).
He was not one for Hollywood commercialism....which is why he sometimes took
years to complete projects.
Like a perfectionist, a true master, it wasn't about the money.
I can't help but have great admiration for the guy.

*..guess i'm getting off topic here...oops*

Seconded.  One of the greatest films ever, I'd probably rank it as my
favorite Kubrick film too.

The book is a must-read, altho I'd probably recommend seeing the movie
first since the underlying theme of the story is a bit more subtle in
the film (the book sort of thwaps you in the head with it, especially
towards the end).

True, but I must say I didn't understand the visual language at the end of
the film until I read the book.

Probably not, but I would rank it above the ones you have seen. Together
with Tarkovsky's Solaris it's my favourite s/f movie too.

Hmmm... wouldn't consider Grand Prix anything special in the
cinematographics stakes. Some innovative racing footage for it's day, but
nothing special in the way of composition/lighting/editing, IMNSHO.

Same thing, different motorsport. Both could have been a lot worse, though
(see also: Driven). <vbg>

So you haven't been to the movies at all in the last 3 decades?

Jan Verschuere

GTR: something wonderful is about to happen

No, those two just happen to be my favourites. I quite liked "Dune" and
"1984" too, BTW, and I do enjoy movies on levels other than it being one of
the artforms.

Trouble is, maybe, there's little "pure" science fiction movies beying made.
Sci-fi adventures, sci-fi thrillers and sci-fi horror(*) a plenty, but
fairly little of the, often slow-paced, social commentary/philosofical
stuff.

(*)PS.: endured the much hyped crock-o-shit called "Event Horizon" on BBC
last X-mas. My vote for worst movie ever.
