I have a soundblaster live x-gamer soundcard. What would be a good set of
speakers to buy for around $100. Thanks for your help.

Don't get the Cambridge soundworks speakers that Creative keeps pushing...
They're obviously getting a kickback from Cambridges sales...

...I think

I don't usually like to endorse MS products, but their DSS 80s are pretty
good.  They have good bass
The Monsoon MM700s are good too.  Not as much bass though

I have the DTT2500 Speakers replaced with at 12" JBL 250watt sub and its
pretty damn good.  Of course the sub cost more than the entire speaker set.

Kickback??? They own the company! http://www.americas.creative.com/speakers/

And I like mine...a lot, although if I was looking today, Altec has a great
5 speaker surround system within Steve's budget.

Kickback? How about two companies that just have a good working relationship
that benefits both?

You obviously don't have Cambridge Soundworks Speakers or you wouldn't have
given the bad advice of not getting them.

I have a SB Live Value! and FPS 2000 Digital Cambridge Soundworks Speakers
and the sound is AMAZING !!!!! I would HIGHLY recommend these speakers for
that soundcard.

If they are good speakers then who cares who gets a kickback.

Bill and Hillary are both good speakers, but I wouldn't spend a dime to hear
them. On the other hand the Creative Labs Cambridge Soundworks line of
speakers are very good.

Assuming you are not going over $100, the FPS 2000s are a great 4 speaker
set but cost about $145 with shipping through buy.com.

So, if you want 2 speakers (or 3 including sub woofer) the Cambridge
MicroWorks are only about $40 and sound great. Probably the best dollar
value around.  The MS DSS 80s for around $60 including shipping sound very
good too, but have an auto shut-off  after 7? seconds so you miss the first
part of any sound coming in which drives me crazy. (can't hear the 'you've
got mail' message.) If you want 4 speakers plus sub woofer, there's the FPS
1000s MicroWorks) for around $80. There are other speakers that sound very
good, but not many that sound better than the CL Cambridge Soundworks
speakers, which BTW, were designed by Henry Kloss, who has been designing
some of the best sounding speakers for over 30 years. I guess the point is,
you can't go wrong with these speakers and you will be happy with them. Oh,
plus they have a nifty little tethered volume control that you can mount on
your monitor or hold in your hand.

Only $40? You must have an amazing source :)
Actually, these Creative Labs Microworks (aka Cambridge Soundworks
Microworks) speakers are in the vicinity of $160 at best, normally
$200ish. I just bought a set this week.

I have no idea how good they sound - I don't have all the pieces
to make a working PC yet :)

very good.
