Why is it that Paul Page always had sidekicks that, well, sounded just
slow and old?! Personally I think Danny Sullivan did a good job with
analysis, but he, Tom Sneva, and Bobby Unser were quite unbearable at
times. I even remember good ol' Danny couldn't half call one of the
races because he was coughing so hard! But I tell you what, I'd rather
have any of the aforementioned guys before I hired SAM POSEY! Goodness,
what a pansy! Bob Varsha, Danny Sullivan (however old he sounds), Rick
DeBruhl, and Jerry Punch would be my choice. Oh, and Jack Arute, but I'd
keep that stick (you know "the stick," the one that the crew chief wacks
the fuelman on the ass with when a car should come in) as far away from
him as possible! He spent more time during the 1994 Indy 500 talking
about the stick than he did about the cars on the track!

Paul Page, Papyrus intros and favourite race commentators
A user asked what had become of Paul Page, prompting confusion over whether he worked at Papyrus because of his voice on the IndyCar Racing II intro. Others clarified he was a TV race commentator and the thread became a discussion of good and bad commentators such as Bobby Unser, Sam Posey and Ben Edwards. One poster who met Page described him as friendly.

Is that Ben Edwards and Jeremy Shaw ? If you think they are awful you
will never be satified. They are IMHO the best commentators i've ever heard.

Sorry but you simply CAN'T beat Bobby Unser. He is well known as the worst
commentator ever. We only had him twice per year since he was covering the
Canadian CART races (or IndyCar back in the days) on the CBC with Brian
Williams for the past 15years I think now. Fortunately this year they
didn't come back since the race moved to another channel ;)
I'm sorry but the guy was senile! He *always* said the same things each
race. We always had the same bloody remarks about "That's not smoke that's
water smoke!" or the SEEMENT walls (they aren't cement walls!). Oh and he
insult Paul Tracy all the time on national Canadian TEEVEE, with his accent
that makes Buddy Baker sound like a New Yorker. Here is one of his famous
quote that he tells at least 1-2 times per race :
Brian Williams : "Thank you Bobby, I know you have a planet to catch"
Bobby Unser : "Now Tham thar is cawled marbuls, And tham thar thangs are
rolled up lattle-itty-bitty pieces of the tahrs, an' if ya's drive over
tham, ya's might wand up hittin' that thar see-ment wall..."
It's not because your an ex-racer that you make a good race analyst.

Just doesn't roll off the tongue the right way. I think it's more like
"I'm Paul Page. From Papyrus, THIS is Indy Car Racing Two."
Please, no rotten tomatoes for the impersonation. <g>

Speaking of commentators, was saddened to hear of the passing of Larry
Nuber a couple months ago....some form of cancer I believe. You might
remember he called the race at Darlington where Elliott won the first
Winston million in 1985. Like him or not, spent many Sunday afternoons
with Larry and Bob Jenkins in the 80's watching Nascar on ESPN.

races. Ned Jarret and Benny Parsons on the NASCAR side. Really like
hearing old tapes of Jackie calling Winston Cup races...drivers may not
make the most professional broadcasters, but they certainly are the
most interesting. I am not a fan of Sam Posey either, that guy sounds
like someone who has no interest in seeing a woman naked. ::)

Actually, that would be Bobby Unser (the only man who can put a positive
spin on Little Al running 20th, "I think he's cooling just his tires").
I met Paul Page this past weekend in the paddock in Houston. He's one heck
of a nice guy, and very willing to talk racing with anyone who'll listen (of
course, I'm biased, he took the time to compliment my Team Lotus
commemorative t-shirt).
