★ Landmark threadDave Noonan's ICR2/N2 to GPL track converter goes on sale

Dave Noonan's commercial converter for bringing ICR2 and NASCAR tracks such as Riverside, Laguna Seca and Indianapolis into GPL went on sale for 15 pounds via sim-garage.co.uk, with AI for oval tracks. Most posters welcomed it and defended the price, and ordering glitches and VAT were discussed. The thread drifted into capital punishment politics and later congratulated Greger Huttu on a 7:49.50 Nurburgring lap.

>You really don't get it, do you? Actually I think the guy has a point, after all everyone here is rationalising their downloading of F12K because they "wanted to try it before buying". In principle there's no difference between downloading a warez version of F12K and a warez version of the converter, provided they buy it at a later date or delete all the converted tracks. Here's a quote from the site, AI for the ovals! ----- It has taken over a year to develop this program and a very large percentage of the time taken has been spent on the AI. Many hundreds of laps have been driven at these tracks in testing and although I would not pretend the AI are 100% perfect, you should be able to race and battle the AI at all the tracks. ----- Andre

Woops, seems to be a problem when ordering online, Noonan sends the converter by mail after receiving payment, but you can only select 'standard shipment' in the form. When I clicked 'Buy now' I got a warning, something like 'product cannot be shipped, please choose another shipping method'. But you can't select another payment method. Great. I clicked 'Ship To different address', then clicked 'Ship to billing address' on the next screen, and after that I selected 'Buy now'. Then I passed succesfully. Makes no sense, but I just got a confirmation by email, so it worked. I've got no problem at all paying for the converter, probably worth every penny! One small, nitpicky detail though. Why do I, as a non-UK citizen/resident, have to pay a UK tax? Usually, when purchasing goods by mail order or online from another state/province/country, one does not pay the tax of that jurisdiction. It's been a few years since I've travelled to the UK and Europe, but I even seem to recall that on any purchases I made while there, I was able to claim some kind of rebate upon departure and got a refund of all the sales taxes I had paid while there (with receipts). It was also not directed to you personally, just a follow-up to the first posting. Having said that, it is quite simple. You either think using warez is ok, and then it doesn't matter if you buy the game or not. Or you think it is not ok, and then you wait for the demo and then decide to either buy or ignore the game. All the justifications are just selfish excuses. One can always think of a reason why one is so important that one can steal something, or copy it, or rip it off, or whatever instead of getting it through legal means. It is just very convenient to bend the rules in your own favour, isn't it, and besides, noone really gets hurt or loses money, right? Oh, and please explain why "I really don't get it"... -peter

It's a fact that the US justice system is based on revenge and that judges have to act like politicians. So it's not a surprise that the mob is influencing rulings quite dramatically. BTW, the bible also says: Thou shall NOT kill. (Begging the group's indulgence, one last time) James, I'm not sure you read my post very well--for I did say that my *personal* wish would likely be centered on vengeance. But I made a distinction between that personal reaction, and the values towards all human life that I would hope my state would embody. People in other advanced democracies have been able to do this. Indeed, I don't see the victims in non-death penalty states up in arms over their lack of "closure." And mind, you, "closure" ( a term that is tossed around far too uncritically, IMO) itself is an open term. Many relatives of victims of crimes like murder have achieved "closure" in ways other than seeing or knowing that the perpetrator has in turn been fried, or poisoned. But I don't think I'm going to change any minds here; and I suspect that the group may be getting impatient with this off-topic, though crazily important, subject. I'm dropping it now. There's closure for you. sighs, --DK PS a few last comments interspersed below. So they're arrested, tried, sentenced. Why do you swoosh my argument against the death-penalty into excuse making for perpetrators? I'm not saying "let'em go--they're the real victims." If you work in law enforcement, then I'm sure you'll realize that the people who do such acts aren't even concerned about laws. These "get tough" laws impress the hell out of the voting populace who gets nervous if their seat belt isn't buckled, but the common slimeball could care less. The fact that society is such hypocrites as to kill others for killing makes them even less likely to hold the laws in any high regard. Nonetheless, "law abiding" society should show itself to be morally superior to the lowest common denominator, not equal with him. When you execute HIM, YOU'VE just killed someone's father/husband/son/brother. Should his family look for revenge on the society that just murdered HIM? -- Chuck Kandler #70 K&S Racing http://www.fortunecity.com/silverstone/thepits/195 Competitor in the TopGear MGPRS2 league at: http://topgear.dhs.org/ Come on & join the fun! Thanks for the nice words everyone. It was a great lap, but not the lap of my life just yet. :) The car is still a bit twitchy towards the end of the lap and if I can correct this by changing a few things in the setup I'm sure I can do a faster lap. -- Greger

One of the great thing about sims is that damn near anyone can buy a ride. That's one of the reasons that people who drive both real cars and sims say that the online competition is far tougher. Congrats to Huttu. His efforts are just as notable as those of any "real" driver. In some ways even more so. The depth of the field is far greater.
