Flame warGrand Prix 2 requirements spark F1GP versus Papyrus flame war

Asked about Grand Prix 2 hardware requirements, a poster quoted MicroProse's minimum of a 486DX2-66 with 8 MB, while rumours said it needed a P90. The thread became a heated argument between F1GP loyalists and NASCAR and ICR II fans, spilling into insults about F1 and NASCAR fans, with a few posters saying they enjoyed all the games.

Im too afraid to even think about them. But if they arent able to optimize the code better I think it would need atleast a pentium or DX4 to run it even in VGA. I certainly hope that the performance of the game in earlier demos will be improved to the finished game. -- - Second place is first of the losers.(Ron Dennis) -
Does anyone know what the hardware requirements will probably be for Formula one grand prix II?
PeterT 13 Dec 1995#309217
According to Microprose the requirements are as follows: -486DX2-66 minimum -8 MEG memory -Double speed CD-ROM drive BUT!!...........I've heard many things about why it isn't out yet and the one that keeps popping up is that it can't run on anything less than a P90 because the frame rate is only at about 15 on a P75 with 125% processor occupancy. I feel that Crammond is resisting SH-M's (Spectrum Holobyte-Microprose) urging to tone the game down and release it now because he wants it perfect. Considering how good the first one was with the hardware he had to work with, I feel that it is worth the wait. Besides, is anybody really sick of playing the best and most classic racing sim of all time--F1GP--yet??
[snip] Yep I am sick of playing it. As soon as Nascar came out, it took over as being the best sim and this is what I spend my racing time on.

Yea, it sucks so bad I deleted from my hard drive! It feels more like driving a hovercraft than a race car. It was good three years ago but Indycar made it obsolete. Now, after Nascar and ICR2, its not even worth playing.

Nascar sucks. Nobody likes to drive in circles. Indy II is fun. But the world is waiting for the stunning graphics from gp2. And F1GP is one of the best racing games if you play it with 2 players.
Indycar made is obsolete ? never. Original F1GP is much better than indycar. Maybe not graphically, but the feel of driving is great in F1GP. Nascar looks great in SVGA and driving ain't bad either, but the tracks suck. It's really boring to drive those circles with absolutely no gear changes needed... Haven't seen ICR2 yet, but after seeing GP2 movie, I'm sure that NO WAY any other racing game is going to top it -- ************************************************************************ ** Pasi Rahikainen ** "It's better to burn out than to fade away!" ** ************************************************************************

( about F1GP : ) Sure, lets talk dirty about F1GP. IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT THEN SHUT UP !!! That you don't like the game ( because your playing on a 286 12MHz machine ) is allright with me, but don't start telling stupid things like "ICR(2) is better" and even worse "Nascar is great". Latter two games are nothing in comparisson of F1GP 2 !!! (na na na na na na, I,ve got myself a demo !!! :-)) ) Just wait until you see that one, probably the same things happen to ya as happend to me. If you would like to taste a bit of the superiority of THE GAME, look the movie and you'll be convinsed !!! Until then, keep weeping over ICR(2) and Nas. ( I really feel sorry for ya ) Iv.

Fact is that racing fanatics are being served well nowadays. How about Sega's decision to convert Saturn shit to PC games (you just need an Diamond Edge, that's all). So, how about a modem/network linked version of Sega Rally, of Sega's Daytona USA ?

I also d/l the movie and was impressed enough i'll probably buy the sim despite the many delays, but as far as blowing away icr2 and Nascar....get real. I'd say it all depends on what type of racing you enjoy the most. SD

Yeah? You know it's wierd, the number of times I've been in my car and when someone drives toward me the car kinda....rotates on the spot you know. Or whenever I cross a line in the road the car swerves left and back, very wierd..... When GP2 is released, I'll watch the newsgroup carefully waiting for you to prove your a grown up really by eating those ill chosen words. ICR2 is good, no doubt about that. GP2 has the triple advantage of coming out later, being written by Geoff "sim-god" Crammond and of course being based upon the greatest racing championship in the world. When it's finally released you shouldn't be allowed to buy it - you just get tied to a chair and watch the ICR2 die-hards flocking to buy it.... :) Cheers! Guys, reading your posts I can only come to one conclusion: I think that you guys got brain washed by ICR2. Sure ICR2 is a great product (possibly the most complete sim) but you shoudnt make stupid statements like those. It makes you dummies even among the pro-ICR2 people. For a start (and thats for you, kadlcak), F1GP was released in 1991 for the Amiga, so we might conclude that work on it began at the most in 1990. I think that for that time it was a pretty revolutionary game with the best "physics model" seen til then. So, MP began the revolution, and if you are comparing the first real game of simulation with a new game done 5 or more years later, you are being a unfair. Nevertheless, I think that I prefer (my opinion!) 10.000 times the babys "physical model" of F1GP than the of ICR (I heard ICR2s is more or less the same), and if you have played with a Joystick or a wheel youll see it improves a lot. And if you turn off all the helps (steering and traction) in it youll see that youll have a more undriveble car, the one you wished for. In the other hand, if youre saying that the GP2 "physical model" is for babies let me advise you that you shoud talk to Geoff and tell him that youre not happy with the game development and want out because youre going off to Papyrus. Yes, I supose you are a member of Geoffs team of course, how would you know about the GP2 "physical model" then ? Let me tell you guys_that_say_ICR2_is_better_than_GP2 that GP2 is a superb effort made by Geoff Crammond and his team (and Im sure ICR2 is too!) and the reason it is so late is because they are concerned about releasing a high quality product and not a "beauty cleaned" version of its predecessor. In conclusion, I think the smartest move you could make is to SHUT UP because GP2 does not exist yet and you are making a fool of yourselfs. After GP2 is released then we can compare the two games, and the discussion will be far more inteligent. FINAL OBSERVATION: I think ICR (and ICR2 which I have not played yet) and F1GP are very good sims, I am not saying one is better than the other, that depends on the persons likes. But what I cannot stand is guys that are so much brain washed that say "my game is better than yours" when the yours doesnt exist yet. "Get real" yourself! >Yeah? You know it's wierd, the number of times I've been in my car and when someone drives toward >me the car kinda....rotates on the spot you know. Hmmmmm, Doesnt F1 use the same concept. Again only non-americans think F1 is the greatest racing championship in the world. IMO F1 is boring. You want true racing, you watch NASCAR Winston Cup Racing, this is one of the closest racing you can watch. F1 means every one (F)inishes (1)lap ahead of the other!!<G> There is one true statement you can say about F1GP2 and that is it will be the best F1 sim on the market. Now the best racing sim, that is something we will have to wait for, and it will also depend on the person. Cheers!

As for GP2, yes, I'm sure I'll probably buy, play and enjoy it but I doubt if I'll set it up as a shrine and pray to it the way you are before you've even seen it. As for the ICR2 die-hards flocking to buy it, they'll probably be too busy flocking to buy Quake!! :) Later... Sandman ------------------------------------------------------------ Erik Sanders

I'll assume when you say non-americans you mean U.S.of America. Canada and Mexico are part of America too and I think most of their racing fans would disagree with you. As much as I don't like to admit it, I live in the good ol' usa and I think nascar is on the same level as wrestling. F1 is the best. The best combo of car and driver wins. If the leader gets a lap ahead of the second place guy it won't be flushed down the toilet because some backmarker spins off the track. I'm sure there is a thread lik this running through r.a.s.f1/indy/etc. Join in, it's the off season. -Chris

The best combo of car and driver wins. I disagree. The driver must be good certainly, but even Shu couldn't take Tyrell or Ligier to the championship. The car has to be top notch first, then a great driver must drive it to get a championship or a win. Too often it turns out to be a lap of hard driving followed by (almost inevitiably) by a parade. Several and please don't. This topic is really meant for simulators and it's *never* the off season in simulator land... Mike

THATS real fun to watch, the reason the cars are so close is becuase its a BLEEDIN' CIRCLE Probably will be, weieng as how Geoff ALWAYS makes the products that sweep the cometitors under the carpet. And he refuses to buckle under time constraints and compromise the perfection of GP2, and i respect that more than if he ha relesed is already and it had lots of bugs, liek a certan ICR2. I agree, but no persons taste can silence the technical superiority factor (and i dont know which game will be better, but personal tase can never fight technical superiority thta for sure) Ciao! ******************************************** Erdem "The GameGuy"

>: That you don't like the game ( because your playing on a 286 12MHz >: machine ) is allright with me, but don't start telling stupid things like hate to interupt this flame war here, but I think they both have their good points. I think ICR2 does a better job of SIMULATING the real indycars, and I like the competitiveness of indycar racing. But F1GP is a great game anyways, even IF it doesn't do as good a job with the sim area of things. I play both ICR2 and Need for Speed, the first because I liek the realistic challenge, and the latter for just sheer imposible fliping fun.
