I was at Best Buy the other night doing...research....yeah that's
it...reseach...and they had a system going with those speakers...sounded
really really good, even with all the noise that is constant in BB stores.

The reviews sounded like the Z680s were awesome...and it is...but the sales

abt. a week before the subwoofer blew out.  That's better than my last
Creative 5.1 Inspires...they were DOA.  Anyway, I took the extended warranty
(which I *never* do), just in case.

Have you heard the 680s?  (I've heard the Klipsch 4.1s.  The 680s are
better.)

I agree wholeheartedly. I have the Klipsch Pro Media 2.400's , and combined
with my Audigy 2 they are simply awesome. I am eyeing their 5.1's, but there
have been some buggy reports on failures with those so I will probably wait
a little longer till they get that sorted out.
Heck, even with a headphone plugged into the headphone jack on the power
pod, the sound is incredible.

Klipsch are no better (nice hype machine over bass and not much more).  I
had the 4.1's and the satellite connectors ALL broke after 18 months (sound
would fade/drop off and I would need to jiggle the wire).  Klipsch support
did nothing for me (I didn't expect free speakers but I did expect a
discount off the satellite replacement price would have been nice).  I did
my homework and found the Monsoon MH 505 5.1's.  Best speakers I've ever
owned (only $140 - a few hundred cheaper than the Klipsch).  However
obvious, it merits mentioning that you don't know what you're missing until
you experience something superior.

These speakers showed me that muddy, overbearing bass is not quality,
dynamic sound (Klipsch and Logitech are muddy and distorted).  The Monsoons,
using cones and planar focus flat panel technology in the satellites, are
exceptional.  I never heard the clarity in the mids and highs I hear now.  I
also enjoy the precise and clear bass which may never shake the desk (good
boom for its size) but more than makes up for it with quality sound.  While
they are great for ***, they especially shine vs. the competition in
music and DVD movies.   Just my 2 cents based on what I've learned and
experienced with speakers.

Harmon Kardon, Harmon Kardon....  Didn't that used to be a stereo
manufacturer in the 1950s?  I wonder who bought the name.  Maybe the same
outfit that bought the Stromberg-Carlson mame....  ;o)

Yer right, tho, the Paradigm's rock!

Right you are, Joe.  I wasn't saying the 680s were the best speakers I've
ever heard; I was saying they're the best value in a self-powered speaker
system I've ever heard.  The best speakers I've ever heard were monolithic
Beveridge columns driven by tubed Audio Research equipment in the 80s.  I
haven't paid much attention to hi-fi since then (featuresets have become
more important to me than pure fidelity).

The only planar speakers I ever liked (other than the Bevs) were
Magneplanars (and I'm glad to see theiy're still around, unlike Beveridge).
I listened to the first Monsoons and they sounded tinny.  But I see at this
year's SEMA show that the "Fast & the Furious" Import Scene denizens favor
Monsoon's car audio stuff now.  Maybe I should give 'em another listen....

I didn't think you said they were the best ever, you're not much for
hyperbole around here. ;0)  I was replying to speed rat who called the
Logitech's pretenders and praised the highly overrated Klipsch (Logitech is
no worse than Klipsch).  I consider the 680's a terrific value, certainly a
better overall choice than Klipsch.  It's also personal taste.  Some people
prefer booming bass and might not like the subtle yet accurate bass of the
Monsoons.

BTW, the planar's on the 505's succeed because of the included cone speaker
(3" I believe) which handle the mid range nicely.  Thankfully, they are not
tinny at all.

PS-My favorite speaker (value & performance) are B&W.  I bought a nice
center channel for my HT (store was closing) and now I am impatient to buy
the L/R.  If only there were a currency producing tree in the yard.

Yes!  I had a lovely set of pyramid-shaped B&Ws back in the 70s.  Sold 'em
to a musician who still has 'em and still loves 'em.  Prolly shouldn't have
sold 'em at all.  Just before my interest in hi-fi waned (when 'putas came
along), I bought a set of Cerwin-Vega lease-breakers with 15-inch woofers!
Drove them with 2 pairs of bi-amped 400-watters.  Lost interest in the music
at abt. the same time...after having grown up with no interest in music,
then fell in love with classical (Baroque), then rock (the Stones), then
disco (hey, it was the 70s!), then country.  Now I listen to my parents'
tunes (Sinatra, Basie, Torme) on one of my TV cable's music channels.  What
happened?

I can't say I've heard the difference myself - but I have heard my brother's
Z-560 setup, and they sound absoultely awesome...he has compared his
directly to the Z-680's his friend bought and plugged into an Audigy 2, and
he says there's no real difference in sound...about as unscientific as it
gets, I know, but my guess is a lot of the increased cost of the 680's over
the 560's comes in the control unit, the remote, and the center channel.
