The P4 1.6A Northwood is probably a better buy right now.  Considering
it can be overclocked to 2.5G easily.  The only thing that can match a
P4 2.5G is probably an Athlon XP 2200.  But it costs like twice that
of the P4 1.6A.  If you factor in overclocking, Intel is ahead at the
moment.

I agree, I still have my 1.2G Athlon and it was a good buy at the
time.  But if one of my friends wants to get a new computer at the
moment I'd tell him to get an Intel.  Better buy with the P4 1.6A.

The bug fixes are not for everyone, and everyone doesn't have to update
every time.

Also, some of the updates are to support new chipsets and processors.

A year ago, I was at the head of the pack of the complainers concerning VIA
chipsets.  It was really ugly back then.  In fact, the ONLY thing that kept
me using AMD processors was the ABIT KG7 Mainboard (which I still use) that
has the AMD 781 NorthBridge.  If it wasn't for this chipset being available,
I would have bailed away from AMD because of VIA in a heartbeat, regardless
of the cost.

But, it's just not as bad these days.  Is VIA as stable as Intel ?  No, not
quite.  But it's by all means something anyone can live with these days.

Don't forget, there are other chipsets available as well.  SIS has been
making a name for themselves lately, starting with the SIS 735 which turned
out to be somewhat of a sweetheart chipset.  Very fast and very stable.  I
don't know much about their newer DDR333 Chipset, though.

And, finally, let us not forget that Intel has also released several chipset
driver updates in the last year.

In short, with Athlon's you can save a TON of money for just a little more
effort.  My only gripe against Intel is the cost.

Oh, and one other thing :)

Though it's not a corporate setting, I have a File Server with 270GB of
storage in it at home running on an ASUS A7V133 motherboard, which has the
KT133a Chipset in it.  I've had no real issues with it, and it has been up
24/7 for over a year.

I run an AthlonXP 1800+ (1.53 Ghz) with the standard AMD cooler (using the
standard heat transfer pad, no fancy smancy greases) and it runs at a nice,
cool 41c.

The case only has the standard front intake and rear exhaust fans, and is
very quiet.

I think case design and layout has a lot to do with it.  This particular
machine is in a Lian-Li PC50 case (one of their better buys) and is easy to
live with.

Question here...  Do ALL of the new Northwood P4's have the 512kb Cache on
them, or is it only the high-end Northwoods ?

Thanks one and all!  He bought the xp1800 and got it up and running today -
Sunday.  It flat out rocks!

I am going to have to buy one just to stay with him.  N2 has never looked so
fine!

Thanks again for all your opinions.

Like shit, saw it the other day when I installed it on a friends PC,
it's a very old PC, and I was going.....did we used to drive that ?

Well, I actually didn't as my Nascar experience started with N2, but you
get the point :-)

ICR2 in lo-res wasn't any better.  I remember trying to race around
Cleveland like that, before I discovered the -h switch.  It'd make your
eyes bleed. <g>  Taught me to read the manual first.  Just thought it
had ***graphics.  :-)

RTFM.....I did the same thing actually, and a friend of mine asked me
why I didn't run ICR2 in hi-res when he came over one day, felt kinda
stupid :-)
