GPL has changed the racing simulation universe. Get used to it, because
there's no going back :-)

Some good points, Richard...

Another thing I've noticed, and I'm not sure why this happens, is when
you get into radical oversteer angles of beyond about 30 degrees from the
straight ahead. For some reason this really seems to kill the framerate
of the sim, as though it's getting into some extra integration steps.
This of course makes the recovery even more difficult than it would have
been otherwise.

Have you any ideas why this occurs?

It may be because your tires start smoking. Drawing smoke and dust tend to
take its toll on the processing power.

Couldn't tell for sure.  Two guesses:

  1) Smoke'n'dust are time consuming to draw.  Try turning them off and
see if it helps.

  2) Rapid change of car orientation seems to hurt the redraw rate.  I
find that some tight turns (espcially with a change of inclination too)
seem to badly hurt the frame rate.  My guess is that something in the
3d routines prefers small changes of view angle to large ones.

I may be wrong of course.

My guess is that in a tight turn or a slide, the framerate drops
because the image is much more dynamic - a lot of textures is flying
across the screen.
While driving straight ahead the image is much more static, you just
change the size of the textures a bit.

It hasn't changed a thing.

Games will still be made to be commercial viabilities.  GPL was not -
but Papyrus didn't realise.

There will NEVER be a GPL2 or anything like GPL ever again...

And NO, GP3 is nothing like GPL...

Could it be the one negative expressed by a minority in r.a.s. that is a
positive to the majority...it's difficult to do well?

Let's see....how many Nascar titles has Sierra released since GPL?

How many Indy Car titles has Sierra released since GPL?

Well?.....Then?.....

This is from the***pit view so you can't see your own smoke.

I think that's true for hairpins, but the phenomenon I'm thinking of I
think is something in the physics engine. It may be the calculations for
the tyre contact patches become more lengthy at high slip angles. Someone
ask David Kaemmer:-)

Have to agree with this comment...
I have bought most of the racing titles that have come out over recent years
and although I get a lot of enjoyment out of them GPL still draws me back.
As an example I picked up Mobil Rally \ Rally 2000 a few weeks ago and was
really having fun with it.. then I wanted to check something out in GPL
(can't remember what it was) and since then I haven't fired up anything else
again.

I have found the same with SCGT, SBK, GP500, Nascar 3, Legends and DTR. I
still enjoy them all but if I could keep
only one of them it would be an easy choice.

You can see the smoke of the front tires also in***pit view.
